Tensions are ratcheting up tonight after israel retaliated against iran for an attack over the weekend. Explosions were reported in at least one city in central iran. Iranian Officials Say a military air base was hit. Now the question is, will things escalate in the region even more , and will iran respond after it had said its military operations were over . In tel aviv, heres abcs News Reporter matt gutman, a senior us official, confirming to us that israel has begun its retaliation against iran. The iranian media reporting that there were explosions heard in the central city of isfahan about 200 miles from tehran. The same media also saying that there is an international airfield in that area. There are military or air force bases in that area as well as possible Iranian Nuclear assets as well. Commercial airliners have now been diverting from the area. Of course, this comes five days after that unprecedented historic barrage from iran against israel. Well over 300 drones, cruise missiles and Ballistic Missiles launched at israel. A Coalition Led by the us and israel knocked the vast majority of them out of the sky. But for the past several days, the Israeli Military has been vowing some sort of response. The Israeli Government has been conspicuously silent until now. Matt gutman, abc news, tel aviv. We are staying on top of the major new developments out of Alameda County. Three Police Officers are now being charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of Mario Gonzalez. Body cam video from the 2021 incident shows alameda Police Officers pinning gonzalez to the ground for several minutes, drawing comparisons to the 2020 death of george floyd. The gonzalez incident happened three years ago tomorrow and in early 2023, after Winning Office da pamela price reopened investigations into eight Police Shootings or incustody deaths, including gonzalez. Her office filed charges against the three alameda officers just after 4 p. M. Today. Abc News ReporterTara Campbell has the new updates in the case. Nearly three years after 26 year old Mario Gonzalez died in custody, Alameda CountyPolice Officers are facing charges. We thought that it was important to inform the public about this very important case. Alameda County District attorney pamela price pledged to reexamine the case when she first took office. Eric mckinley, james fisher and cameron leahy, leahy have each been charged with one count of Involuntary Manslaughter, price reversing the decision of her predecessor, nancy omalley, who cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing. She signed off on a final report two years ago, stating in part, we conclude that the officers decision to detain and arrest mr. Gonzalez and their subsequent use of force was objectively reasonable, considering the agencys policies. The totality of the circumstances, and the officers stated rationale. District attorney price declined to confirm whether new evidence was brought in to review, and made clear she was walled off as she described from the case. I will not be participating and have not participated in the ultimate decision about the case, and im very proud that my public accountability unit, which i created in january of 2023, has been able to independently assess the evidence and come to a decision about this case. Investigators concluding, based off a second autopsy, that gonzalez died of asphyxiation. While the initial report years ago pointed to toxic effects of methamphetamine and morbid obesity, among the causes of his death, will they get justice . No. Justice. Is mario coming home. Kat brooks is the executive director of the Anti Police Terror project, and believes the officers should be facing heavier charges. Its really hard to get a cop charged, let alone convicted, in this state or any other state around the country. This is very much far from over all. Madam d. A. Can do is charge. Now its up to a judge and a jury at this time, one of the three involved officers is no longer employed by the city of alameda, while the other two have been placed on administrative leave. If convicted, they face up to four years in state prison and are expected to be in court in may. Tara campbell, abc seven news new developments with governor newsoms plan to clear out death row at san quentin prison and convert it into a rehabilitation center, some of the condemned have already been relocated. One of the prisons is in chino in southern california. The mayor says she learned that 26 prisoners were transferred there and is concerned about it. Chinos prison sits right in the middle of the town, and theres a school, a park and businesses nearby. Oh gosh, these prisoners are the worst to the worst. I mean, they have committed murder. They have committed rape. They have committed atrocities that you wouldnt even want to know about. Last month, when abc seven news visited san quentin for a tour of the prison, we learned more about the effort to reform death row inmates. One prison official says this program has been around for about two years, and so far its working. We have several, programs here that have a 0 recidivism rate. As far as the guys that are, transferring out, one of the reasons why condemned inmates cant stay at san quentin is because it does not have an electrified fence. The goal is to move all of them out of the prison by july, a measure that would toughen penalties for shoplifting and drug dealing is one step closer to being put to voters. Its called the homelessness, drug addiction and theft reduction act. Supporters were in San Francisco today to announce theyve gathered 900,000 signatures. More than enough to get it on the november ballot. The measure would enact changes to proposition 47, which made some nine nonviolent property crimes and drug possession offenses. Misdemeanors instead of felonies. Retailers, including target and home depot, largely funded the measure. Election officials will now verify the signatures. The idea first started circulating during the apec summit last november, but in february, it was announced san diego would be getting some pandas. Breed provided this update from her current visit to beijing. I have some really exciting news. We have some cute, cuddly black and white beauties coming to our city. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome pandas to San Francisco pretty exciting. The zoo ceo spoke with our Media Partners at the sf standard. She hopes to renovate an existing facility so the pandas can arrive by 2025. That will cost about 4 million, followed by 20 million for a new exhibit. The zoo plans to launch a major fundraising effort. Its the hotly contested name change this month. The San FranciscoBay Oakland International Airport and the city of San Francisco is now suing the port of oakland over it. Lets take a live picture from the abc7 Oakland Airport camera tonight. Last week, port of oakland commissioners voted to change the airport name to that San FranciscoBay Oakland International Airport, now San FranciscoCity Attorney david chu says the name switch will confuse travelers and infringes on sfos trademark. We are concerned about how oakland is trying to intentionally divert traffic from sfo to itself, if that will create economic harm for us. Its unfair and it infringes on our long standing trademark rights. The port responded to the suit saying, quote, sfo cannot lay claim to the geographically descriptive terms San Francisco, let alone claim exclusive rights to the San Francisco bay. A final vote on the name change is scheduled for next month. Abc seven news is following the safety issues at San Francisco at an intersection in San Francisco last month, a family of four was killed after an suv crashed into them at a bus stop in the west portal neighborhood. A terrible tragedy. Now theres a new plan that dramatically changes how people drive and walk in that area. Hes announcing 192 million in new grants to 17 california communities marin and san mateo counties received grants, as well as the cities of oakland and santa cruz. The money will help fund some 20 projects to get people into permanent housing. Whats great about this program, in particular . Uh, this one is targeted. Its specific, its tangible. In opera, you have this beautiful vehicle that is called music. Ricardo jose rivera is from puerto rico. His singing career has taken him from chicago to houston and now the bay area. This will be the first time the singer is performing a piece by a latin american composer. It feels like home in a way. Its not foreign. Its a great opportunity to bring in all of these people that may not 100 identify or feel familiarized with italian or german or french opera. For the hope opera can bring a wider audience through these doors. We want all of our san jose fans to know that the opera belongs to them, and they belong to the opera, general director shawna lucey says. One of the motivating factors of programing florencia in san jose was knowing more than a third of the citys population is latinx.
