It won the Pulitzer Prize even before it got to broadway, and it won the tony once it opened. Its based on a frustrated writer working as a lion king usher writing a musical about working as a lion king, usher. I had the chance to speak with the creator about his circle of strife and jesus where the play hails, who usher . Usher is a young, fat, black, gay musical theater writer who is an usher at the lion king, and hes sort of cycling through his own sort of self perceptions and his thoughts sort of take form around him. Show me how to pray. While i did draw from personal experience to write the show, its not autobiographical, not exactly. Its emotionally autobiographical. I felt everything that usher has felt. Maybe you dont know how to pray so when you were an usher at the lion king, what was or wasnt going through your head standing at the back of that audience . So one day i was on the mezzanine level of the theater, and we had just let patrons come in, and its sort of an older woman had come in and shed gone down to her seat in like row aa, and i was standing in aisle four, and then she sort of turned around. She was looking for a booster cushion, and she goes, usher, usher and i like clocked that. And that sort of became the motif of the opening number. But the most fascinating thing i thought, like the lead character, you said hes in college, hes in college. Wow. The man playing usher is a junior in college. He saw an ad on instagram, for a National Call to be the lead in a strange loop, he sent his material in. He got the role. Isnt that amazing . And hes so good. He is. This is his first big production. The power of social media. Wow. Congrats. You ready . You ready, he says his key to success. He said, i stay on my phone, so i think it got him to where he is. Yeah. Thats great. Congrats to him. Heres a look outside from our exploratorium camera. Partly cloudy conditions. The accuweather headlines call for summer like weather today.
