A man fell off a cliff and despite a heroic effort, he was pronounced dead. Sergio cantanna has our story. Reporter this was a swift and sizable effort to save a life. But its a rescue that didnt end well. We retrieved the victim from the water, and he was transported by the coast guard to marin, a base for the coast guard. Unfortunately, the adult male is deceased. Reporter at ft. Baker, the body was driven away in a black van and officers with the National Park place and ranger service, inspected evidence. They have not released any information how the man fell off the cliff or who he is. San francisco firefighters say the area where he fell in was not easy to get to. Trails are marked for the safety of the people. You have to be careful to stay away from the edge. The water is pretty rough over here. If youre from the area, you dont you dont get too close to the cliffs to go look at anything. Reporter kimber lou watched the rescue effort. This has been a tough year in this area. In april, five young men were sent into the water at ocean beach. Two did not survive. Tomorrow, a full team of federal investigators is expected to arrive at the scene of the worst hot air balloon crash in recorded u. S. History. It happened in texas about 30 miles outside of austin. 16 people were killed when the balloon hit a power line, caught fire, then fell to the ground. Experts say power lines are an occupational hazard. Youre trying to land the basket or the balloon near a road. Its often times going to require you to either skip over or land close to high tension power lines. Skip nichols owns heart of texas air balloon lives. The experienced pilot was among those killed. New at 11 00, Police Arrested a man accused of a hit and run crash while driving drunk. It happened around 8 00 tonight at industrial boulevard in sleepy hollow. Police say the driver of a blue pickup truck was racing another car when the truck slammed into a mercedes. Three people in the truck ran away. A witness who saw the crash and went to help the victim says he couldnt believe it when he saw the driver run away. You just endangered somebodys life, you caused harm to them and you dont want to help out . You dont want to take responsibility for what youve done . Police later found the driver of the car. Service is back to normal tonight after a fire on the tracks closed down walnut creek b. A. R. T. Station. It happened just before 3 00 this afternoon. Smoke could be seen for miles. It took firefighters 30 minutes to put it out. They think a power pickup paddle is to blame. If one of those paddles was stuck in an up position, and made contact with something tore than the third rail, theres a lot of energy there, which is definitely enough to set something on fire. The man resisted arrest and may have kicked and spit the officers. Thats excessive force. Reporter this activist believes the man was racially profiled. Reporter we showed the video to joseph marshal, who has no jurisdiction over b. A. R. T. Police. The young man, looked like he was hit while he was on the ground and subdued and handcuffed. A wildfire in Monterey County grew by three square miles today. 57 homes have been destroyed. The fire is just 15 contained and it started eight days ago. The cause, still unknown. The skies above san jose were a little smoke wri because of a 124acre brush fire. Right now, no homes are threatened. Investigators are not sure how it started. The flames are now 75 contained. 26,000 runners are hopefully sleeping right now as they prepare for somes San Francisco marathon. Crews put up barricades for the big crowds expected. The marathon starts at 5 30 in the morning. The race starts in front of the ferry building, winds through the city and across the Golden Gate Bridge before finishing back at embarcadero and fulsome.
