A rapidly rising creek forces evacuation as the bay area deals with a day of downpours. We have seen some intense rain, strong winds and a slow evening commute home. We have it all today, rain, wind, flooding, mudslides, downed trees plus too many car crashes to count. Tonight its not over yet. We have meteorologist sand sandia matallo. We have rainy conditions. Intensity is not as bad. We have it around the san mateo coast heading out towards skyline boulevard on the peninsula, san carlos, foster city, belmont area. Street level. Elm street youre seeing some wet roadways. Concord and pleasant and walnut creek. Light rain is steady and light around livermore and 580. We take a look at one other location, south bay from sarch at that klara to san jose. This was a 3 on our storm impact scale. It is verified as a 2. Downgraded it to a moderate storm. Still gusty over the hills. Remaining gusts to 40 on mount tam. Not as strong as earlier tonight. 11 00 tonight you see where the rain is as we head into your morning commute. In morin county a rapidly rising creek forces some evacuations today. Cornell bernard continues the coverage live from news 7, cornell. Alma and dan, somewhat back to normal after this creek gave everyone a very big scare. Coming dangerously close to flooding. It was no drill when the flood horns sounded alerting everyone in downtown to evacuate. Dan hillman moved to higher ground. I actually got an alert on my phone also as well as the sirens. What did you think of that . Things are going down. By 6 00 p. M. Police had streets blocked off. Downtown was deserted. The creek was at 12 feet just a foot away from jumping its banks. Its barely fitting under some of the buildings. I havent seen it this high. Check out this video from the ross valley Fire Departments web cam showing just how fast the creek rose from calm creek to raging water in just a matter of hours. If we get six inches of rain in 12 hours we know that the creek is going to come up. This is a significant amount of rain. Make sure all of the product that we had that was sitting down lower is up off the floor. Brad mckenzie at three ring cycles tried saving all of the merchandise that he could when he heard the flood horn and got this tweet from marin public works. We took it seriously and got everything up off the floor that we could. Put our flood gate doors up. Every business has these flood gates which locked tight in front of doors to keep water out with the help of sand bags. This time the creek gave downtown a break that caused a lot of drama. It was a very close call. Were all very relieved that the water stopped just in the nick of time. Thats for sure. The evacuation lifted earlier when the creek started to go down. The town manager said last time this area flooded was back in 2005. That could happen again because winter is far from over. Were live in san anselmo. Afc 7 news was in pembroke this evening as residents dealt with fastmoving flood waters. Abc 7 News Reporter Cornell Bernard caught up with one homeowner who said the two creeks surrounding her home both overflowed sending a couple of inches of water right under her house. Has it ever been this bad . No. This is like two years ago we had flooding but not nothing like this. Reporter sarah brooks long said shell wait for the water to subside and get fans to dry it out. Thankfully the inside of her house is okay. Heres what it looks like in rural marin county. Flood waters submerged a car in unincorporated marin county. Nearby homeowners were briefly urged to evacuate. Theyre allowed back. Look at the photo of this tree blocking the road. The road west of big rock in san ra fell will be closed. Drivers in oakland had to deal with flooded roads. This is high street off of route 80. A foot of water covers the street. Lets take you now to the south bay as is so often the case. The Santa Cruz Mountains were hit hard causing big problems. Abc News Reporter katie marzia joins us. Reporter there have been multiple rock slides and mudslides forcing road closures. At one slide i asked the chp officer if i could interview him. He said he was sorry, he didnt have time. He had a long list of other locations to get to. On bear creek road at ralston ridge, the road will be closed overnight. The mudslide has been in the making for a while. Concrete barrier to try to keep the mud there. It failed. Big part of the hillside came down and washed really, really slippery mud onto the roadside. David maine got his truck stuck in the mud. When we found him he had been waiting for a tow truck. Damage to my ego, not to my truck. It had traffic back the up in both directions leaving drivers decide their next move. Joy haying began dished her car on the shoulder and walked home. There was a mandatory evacuation. There is concern about the river flooding the road. New at 11 00, a large tree came crashing down late tonight on a danville home all decorated for the holidays. It happened on bridgewater circle near old creek road. No one was injured. The Fire Department was unable to remove the tree tonight. Crews are expected back out again tomorrow to deal with that. Also new at 11 00, a small sinkhole has closed a lane of traffic near valley view drive. An area started to sink tonight. Pg e says crews were doing work on a pipeline and filled the hole with paving material. That material did not set because of all of the rain opening a hole. No word when that lane will reopen. Reporter it has been a brutal night on the roads. It is wet, it is cold, it is windy. There have been several problems. In fact, weve faced several of our own tonight. It took us an hour to get out of San Francisco tonight. Everywhere we turned, gridlock. It wasnt much better once we made it on to 280. Here is one reason why, the westboro exit on 280 south shut down tonight after a tree fell on the off ramp. Cal trans crews rushed to clear the massive tree. The on ramp to southbound 35 from northbound highway 1 after a pine tree fell crushing part of the guardrail. A car wasnt able to avoid the tree and crashed into it. Were advising everybody to slow down because you never know whats going to be coming around the next corner. It has been pretty busy. A lot of trees are down. A lot of traffic collisions. Just the usual during rain season. Reporter the weather caused problems on city streets in south San Francisco. The traffic lights started flashing. Crews moved quickly from one emergency to another. When its raining its typical. We expect that. Reporter and while weve been here for the past hour or so weve seen plenty of activity on 280. Lots of police cars, lots of ambulances rushing by. As we head into the afternoon hours the rainfall does diminish. Temperatures in the morning, upper 30s to 40s with the spotty showers. Definitely cold enough to where youll need to grab the extra layer. For the afternoon, dont get rid of the extra layer. Still cool. Temperatures in the low to mid 50s despite the fact youll be seeing plenty of sun to end your work week. A few showers for your friday morning. After that its dry. Winter like chill sets in saturday, sunday, monday mornings. Youre talking about temperatures that are going to be down to freezing and below for some of our inland valleys. Afternoon highs in the low to mid 50s. Definitely on the cool side. Monday the temperatures begin to come up. Youll notice, tuesday its about 60 degrees.
