Sky 7 hd is live over the scene of a deadly accident involving a bart train in the east bay. Two bart employees have been killed. Hello. Im anna dates with the Early Edition of abc 7 news at 500. Nick smith has an update for us, nick . Reporter we understand that those two employees were hit near north main and jones. We have also heard from a bart employee the two killed were nonunion employees suggesting they may have been management. Greg just arrived to the scene. Shes getting information and will confirm that information and update us. I want you to look my shoulder and see the train involved. The two bart workers may have been performing maintenance between walnut street and Pleasant Hill after 1 00 p. M. Officials have not identified names, ages or gender but confirmed both were hit by an eastbound train. When we arrived on the location, we could see bart police securing the scene and getting information from witnesses. We asked if the train was in operation as part of regularly scheduled maintenance or some type of training. They were not ready to confirm who was operating the train and why. A situation like this where were on strike because the rails need to be kept clear of any type of rust, thats how the trains communicate is through the rails. So there are maintenance runs done with the trains. Reporter this is a view from sky 7 hd. It gives you an overhead view of the action. Officials confirm wherever there is an accident involving a train, there are a set of procedures they go through. Its initially treated as a criminal investigation. Pictures are taken and the train operator is tested for drugs and alcohol. We heard the president of at us on her way to the scene to the location. We do know that the bart spokesperson has arrived and again, the general manager is here. She told me nick, im just trying to get some information. Im not avoiding you. I will come back and give you information as we learn it. Two employ yeses struck and killed on the tracks. We did see the officers on the scene covering those bodies respectfully with the tarp. We also learned just now to our newsroom, weve been told by members of local 1555 they will not strike tomorrow out of respect for the two employees who were killed on the track. Tonight bart and two Largest Unions are in communication, though not actively negotiating. Today a union, atu 1555 said it will vote on barts last offer. The unions president said she doesnt expect members to approve it and wants to continue talks. Bart and the unions agree on the financial side of the contract. The pay pension and Health Insurance cost. However, the union says they do not agree on work rules including the hours of the workday and when they receive over time. Abc 7 News Reporter has the latest on this. Reporter on word that one of barts unions will vote on the latest contract came during a News Conference today. Leaders took the opportunity to read an open letter to computers about their concern to go on strike. They insist in a charge on work rules that is unacceptable. Grace and her staff have said that they want a change in rules that would allow them to update certain practices, like writing reports using tools like ipads instead of writing reports by hand. During todays News ConferenceAntoinette Bryant said their work rules have little to do with technology and are in place to protect workers from the whims of management. Among the examples is protecting against subcontracting. Were going to vote until the final offer. Were getting that printed up fur members now. We have a meeting tentatively set. Well vote that contract, we absolutely are. We know our members are going to vote it down. Bryant also said the main reason the contract will be voted down is because it doesnt address safety issues. Bart management. These issues, by law, have been part of a package that we presented since april 1st. So its been there how many times we talked about it, i dont know. To be clear, these comments came earlier today before the accident involving a bart train and the deaths of two people on the tracks. This weekend bart continues to offer limited round trip bus service to San Francisco from nine bart stations. Todays Service Hours were from 6 00 to 9 00 a. M. With service between 3 00 to 6 00 p. M. The buses will run again tomorrow morning at 8 00. There is increased Ferry Service oakland to San Francisco and 13 departures. There are lines in san fan today for those ferries. A worker at San FranciscoGeneral Hospital reported seeing an unconscious woman in a stairwell one week before the body of a missing patient was found in the same spot. 57yearold Lynne Spalding disappeared from her 5th floor room on september 21st. She was found in a rarely used stairwell on october 8th, 17 days after she vanished. The San Francisco chronical said the orderly told a nurse he saw a woman reportedly passed out in a stairwell. The nurse contacted the Sheriffs Department which provides security for the hospital, however, its unclear how the Sheriffs Department responded and if they sent anyone to check that stairwell.
