Are infected with enterovirus 68. These are the first in Northern California. Allen wong joins us live now with details. Allen . Reporter yeah, larry and cheryl, to keep things in perspective, more than 300 people have died from the flu in california this year. None have died from the enterovirus d68. The hospitals are seeing an increasing number of children with the enterovirus. In fact, the first two cases in the bay area popped up right here in Alameda County. In Alameda County, weve just been notified this morning we have two confirmed cases. Reporter there have been no deaths in the u. S. Related to entero virus d68. But whats alarming is there have been several cases of paralysis in colorado. Theres a cluster reported in children in colorado, with acute limb weakness. And my understanding sd ining t of those have been investigated and four of the nine tested positive for this particular virus. Reporter the two cases confirmed in Alameda County were both children who are now recovering and did not suffer paralysis. The enterovirus has been reported in 14 states. So far only children admitted into hospitals are being tested for the virus. The little guy that weve got here in the hospital now is so sick. Reporter lisas little 3yearold nephew is suffering from the same cold and flu symptoms related to enterovirus. But they still dont know exactly what hes suffering from. What happens, what do they how do they make these little kids comfortable or better. Reporter there is no vaccine for enterovirus d68. With this particular one we actually, the method, its better to do season and water hand washing than alcohol sanitizers. Reporter they expect to see more cases in Northern California as the flu season progresses. Allen wong, abc 7 news. There is no specific treatment for enterovirus. There are basic tips to protect you and your family. Common sense, wash your hands often with season and water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Cough into your sleeve or elbow. If you or your kids happen to be sick, dont go to work or school. Ebola patients have been told to stay in their home. A dallas judge ordered an armed guard to remain outside the house because the family would not comply with the request to stay inside. Thomas duncan is from liberia, being treated for ebola at a dallas hospital. They plan to prosecute duncan because at the airport questionnaire he said he did not have contact with anyone with ebola. He helped a pregnant woman in liberia, and they later found she had ebola. In San Francisco they were talking about the ebola virus and how to stop it from spreading. Its killed more than 3,300 people in west africa. There are more than 7,000 cases reported there. Leeann mel endes joins us to tell us about the threat of the virus in the united states. Larry, the consensus is have there been a coordinated effort at the beginning of the ebola epidemic, we wouldnt be standing here talking about it. Those on the ground say it will take at least a year to contain the virus. But today, at a ucsf conference, those who dealt with epidemics like smallpox, say we will win this one, and no, the epidemic will not spread to the u. S. It was certainly too little, too late. Reporter thats how the worlds medical community describes the response to the ebola epidemic in west africa. The deadly virus was first identified in march. Today ebola is in nearly every district of sierra leone. It will get worse before it gets better. Its also going to take about a year, i think, overall to clean up. Reporter dan kelly has worked in sierra leone for eight years. He said the delay in action has been devastating. Thats what this panel was discussing today at a conference at ucsf. The disease spread so quickly because there was no coordinated Public Health response on the ground. Health care workers were disproportionately affected because many lacked personal protection gear. Thats how ebola also raged through guinea and liberia. American Health Care Providers have been too afraid to travel to that region, until now. Were putting structures in place to make those staff more easily met and to reduce the level of fear that americans have. And hopefully increase their willingness to join the response. Reporter the cdc is actively training doctors and medical personnel on how to safely deal with patients in west africa. Volunteers are now guaranteed a safe evacuation, if they are infected. Ebola is a challenge to weak Public Health systems in postconflict countries at the periphery of three nations all together. Reporter even though the u. S. Has seen the first ebola case in texas, everyone agrees hospitals here are well equipped to deal with the ebola virus. Our job here is to diagnose those cases quickly, to isolate them, to treat them, and then to deal with their contacts, their close contacts. It will be contained as has been shown. But hopefully we can do it next time without so many people dying. The man from texas, thomas duncan, is back in the hospital after Hospital Personnel mistakenly sent him home. Members of his family have been quarantined by court order. Leeann, thank you so much. On to other news of the day. A suspect is in custody accused of breaking into a home and stabbing the man who lived there. 27yearold Ignacio Maldonado was arrested after breaking into the home this morning. Reporter police descended on this quiet home at 3 00 in the morning after the man broke in through the kitchen window. They spent hours combing through the house. The residents say blood splattered across multiple rooms. It was a violent crime, no one in the neighborhood saw coming. Im quite surprised. This is a very quiet neighborhood for a long, long time. Reporter the victims sister said she woke up to the sounds of a man in the downstairs bedroom next to her. She opened her door. The man held out a knife, then demanded her cell phone and money. When she screamed for help, her 53yearold brother ran downstairs. He was stabbed multiple times in the chest and neck. When the officers arrived on scene, they found the victim homeowner inside bleeding profusely. And he was transported to the hospital. Reporter another resident seen here in the khaki shorts trying to tackle the suspect but he got away. 24yearold Ignacio Maldonado was found in the nearby bushes and brought in for questioning. There are multiple charges he can face. Burglary, assault, thats just a minimal charge he faces right now. Reporter a man matching his description stabbed a woman sleeping in her car just a few blocks away. She drove herself to the hospital. Police are investigating to see if the two crimes are connected. Now, that woman received just a couple of stitches. But the man who lived in the home behind me, his injuries were much more severe. However, he is expected to survive. In santa clara, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. A lot of outrage over a case of animal cruelty at a foster farms chicken ranch in fresno. Authorities caught four suspects suspected of killing 920 birds. The sheriffs deputies said the man and three of his friends used golf clubs and other items to kill the birds which were found dead yesterday morning. Foster farms estimates its loss to be about 5,000. It offered a 5,000 reward leading to the arrest of those responsible. Deputies have not said exactly how social media led to the suspects, but all four have been are charged with burglary and animal cruelty. A spare the air alert is issued for tomorrow. Friends and colleagues gathered to pay their last respects to joseph mcnamara. He was an advocate of communitybased policing and a staunch critic of assault weapons and war on the drugs in the 70s and 80s. He was a true pioneer in law enforcement. He was innovative. A visionary. Ahead of his time. And above all, respected leader. After he retired, he became a fellow at the hoover institution, and a bestselling author. It was getting quite hot with the window reflection, and the sun. Reporter the firefighters first thought of breaking a window to pull the man inside. But decided instead on a spidermanlike response. A crowd of onlookers gathered below as police blocked off the streets. Something to worry about. I was worried. Reporter the man who worked for the elite Window Washing Company said they have been stranded for two hours or more before 911 was called. One of the motors on their platform had malfunctioned. Firefighters carried equipment to the top of the building. Firefighter brian rappelled down. Then everyone was hoisted up and over. Brian said the men were used to the height, so no panic. But he was a bit anxious. A lot of training goes into this type of highangle rescue that occurred today. But yeah, of course, you get a little bit of anxiety and a little bit of stress. She spoke at the conference in london today. She described trying to help two young ebola victims while working in sierra leone. Both children, a brother and sister, 4 and 2, died. I came in the following morning, and she was covered in blood. She still had a very puzzled expression on her face. And she wasnt breathing. Mario harris an Alabama High School player passed away on sunday, two days after he collapsed on the field after a tackle. Harris coach head the hit was routine. Harris got up right after. But then fell back down. The quarterback was days away from sell baiting his 18th birthday. In North Carolina last friday, another player collapsed during pregame warmups. His older brother said a blood clot in his brain may have been a factor in his death. So much potential he had. Just cut short. With this particular one, we actually, the method is better to do season and water hand washing rather than alcohol hand sanitizers. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and cough into your sleeve or elbow, or not your hand. If you or your kids are sick, dont go to work or school. They expect to see more cases as the cold and flu season progresses. Theyre shifting into high gear for the contagious virus targeting young people and children.
