It involved a bus and a pedestrian. Police say the driver is cooperating, but theyre not giving us very many details. But they do say that there is a surveillance camera on that bus that should play a key part in their investigation. Its the 18th pedestrian death this year. A 51yearold San Francisco woman satisfied as lori helmer was jogging when she was hit by a golden gate transit bus. It happened this morning as the driver was turning left on to van ness avenue. The driver is one of our senior drivers. Hes been with the agency for more than 35 years and he has a very good safety record. Hes obviously distraught right now. Reporter mo couture is also shaken. Her office is across the street and she has seen close called. Its very confusing with the lights and the turns of the cars. The cars really whip through here very quickly. A lot of them run the lights here. Reporter van ness is considered one of the citys worse. Advocacy group walk sf says five people have died along that corridor this year. Its an urban environment, but you have this more suburban style freewaylike street. And the crosswalk, to be honest, you have two simple Lines Marking a crosswalk. Thats not up to best practice. Reporter walk sf is among those pushing the citys vision zero, a strategy to try to reduce pedestrian deaths to zero in the next ten years. On tuesday, voters passed two propositions that might help. Now that we have the voters confirmation, weve got some 300 million to work with to redesign these streets, to educate, to enforce. Reporter any changes cant come soon enough. Three people are hit by vehicles every day in San Francisco. Carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. Antioch police are interviewing witnesses after a man was shot to Death Outside a Shopping Mall just after 11 00 a. M. The parking lot where the man was gunned down on somersville road. Witnesses say the man and his brother walked out of the mall when a blue car drove into the parking lot. Somebody inside that car then fired several shots at the 32yearold victim who died at the scene. No arrests have been made yet. Students at all ten uc campuses could face tuition hikes every year for the next five years. The university of californias board of regents announced today that its considering a plan to cover a 125 million short fall. Officials say without more money from the state, students will have to pick up the bill. A little bit incredulous to say that this is a promise for Higher Education if your overall revenues are increasing by 8 and youre only going to increase our revenues by 4 . Governor brown had promised uc would get four years of general funding increases from the state so long as tuition levels remained flat. They now say the deal was onesided. Its asking for the fiveyear fee hike to increase access for california students, cover Pension Plans and increase education equality. As ballots are still being counted in san jose, the candidate sitting in the second spot announced he is not throwing in the towel just yet. Only 2,500 votes separate councilman sam lacardo from supervisor dave corteze. At a news conference, corteze said the election is still very much up for grabs. Theres still approximately 70,000 votes just in san jose that need to be counted by the registrar voters and a 1 shift right now in this election changes the outcome. Afterwards, corteze spoke with several San Jose Police officers telling them that whether hes mayor or just remains a supervisor, he wants to get them better pay and pensions to stop police from leaving san jose for other police departments. Now that the Lengthy Campaign is over, the oakland mayor and mayor elect appeared together at city hall. They say they will join forces to ease the citys transition into a new administration. San Francisco Mayor ed lee ended what suspense there was about his political future. Today during an event, lee announced he will run for reelection in 2015. Mayor lee says he wants to follow through on the initiatives he started during his current term. Another priority is making the city more affordable. The citys incredibly expensive and were working on all those things that are great equalizers. Affordable housing, transportation, a good minimum wage, excessabaccessible parks. The big question now is whether a serious contender will challenge mayor lee. A poll indicated state senator mark leno could beat ed lee in a headtohead matchup for mayor. The ballots are still being counted, yet San Francisco has already started tearing up the soccer fields at Golden Gate Park after the apparent victory of measure i. That proposition replaces the grass field with artificial turf. But today protesters blocked construction crews from entering that site. They say the city is being sneaky by not waiting until all the votes are counted. The director says measure i is way ahead and the permits were already approved long ago.
