We had numerous lightning strikes and a patch of showers earlier but now just have locally heavy downpours. Heres a little cell moving between santa clara and milpitas producing wet weather over 101 87 and 880. Not exactly what afternoon and evening commuters want to see. Up in the north bay it has become more widely scattered. Here is a little cell in the central part of napa county. Let me pull back and give you the bigger picture. Notice how the lightning strikes have disappeared moving up in the antioch area but still quite an expansive area of showers and this will be the pattern going into the evening hours. Well see the intensity continuing to diminish as storms move from south to north. Heres a great view of dark clouds over the bay from our east bay hills camera. Some of the areas that received the most rainfall today penn grove in the last 24 hours. 0. 94 of an inch. Petaluma over 0. 4 sunnyvale over 0. 6. Rainfall totals generally have been very light. Those areas of course that i just showed you received lots of rain. Notice oakland, San Francisco, san rafael, half moon bay, measuring 0. Lets continue our coverage with abc 7 News Reporter kris nguyen. Hes live in san jose. Reporter we knew there was a chance for rain today but many people still didnt plan for it. Who can blame them . Its the month of may, its been pretty dry. If you take a look behind me you can see the evidence of the rainfall. Its been coming down the past couple of hours. A sprinkling now. A quick look at some video shows a very wet, yet quiet afternoon in downtown san jose. We typically see more people out and about but that definitely wasnt the case earlier. The weather really affecting downtown businesses, especially restaurants and bars that are used to seeing a late lunch crowd. Now, in terms of those who decided to head outside, some of them had their jackets on but we saw a good amount running around without an umbrella trying to meet Mother Nature at her own game. Traffic might be a little worse today than normal so hopefully get home quickly. But take it easy on the roads. Nobody is used to the rain anymore. A lockdown has ended after a shooting near a vallejo high school. A young man was shot and killed early this morning. That shooting was not on campus but the victim may have been a student there. The school was locked down as a precaution as police searched for the shooter who remains on the loose. The lockdown ended just before 2 00 after police determined the suspect was no longer in that area. A cruise ship docked in San Francisco is dealing with an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness. Sky 7 hd shows the star princess at pier 27. It arrived this morning. The ship left San Francisco on april 29th on a 14day cruise to hawaii and baja. Passengers told abc 7 news people began getting sick just four days into the voyage. Altogether 135 passengers reported being ill during the trip. The ship is now being cleaned before it departs for another voyage to vancouver this evening. Today in sacramento, the state Senate Approved a controversial vaccine bill aimed at making it harder for parents to opt out of getting their children vaccinated. Laura anthony is gathering reaction this afternoon from the State Capitol. Laura. Reporter well, this bill faced opposition here at the State Capitol all along the way. It cleared a major hurdle today. Supporters of sb277 can expect more of the same as it heads off to the assembly. Ayes 25 nos 10 that measure passes. Reporter it wasnt even close as the California Senate voted 2510 to pass a controversial vaccine bill that now moves on to the state assembly. It will halt the continuing spread and rise growth in numbers of unvaccinated children and people in their communities. Reporter senate bill 277 would eliminate both a personal belief and religious vaccine exemptions for all california schoolchildren. Some opponents say they support vaccines but not this bill. It comes down to what do we as a society, what do we as a legislature trade when we mandate that somebody has to do this to protect somebody else. Reporter as they have throughout the process parents opposed to sb277 showed up wearing red and vowing not to give up the fight to keep the bill from becoming law. Once we are going down the road that the government can tell you what youre going to put in your body we are in a lot of trouble. Reporter sb277 grew out of a Measles Outbreak in california earlier this year. Debate could begin in Assembly Committees this summer. In sacramento, Laura Anthony abc 7 news. Also in sacramento today Governor Brown presented his revised may budget. Its a record spending plan that sends billions more to public schools. Brown had said the Strong Economy has brought in an extra 6 billion to the states coffers. The finances of california have stabilized. Were balancing our budget. And just since january 7 billion dollars have come into the state treasury. Most of that is going to go to education. The governor is now proposing 380 million go to an earned income tax credit for californias poor. Brown also wants to freeze instate undergraduate tuition at uc schools for at least two years, but much of the surplus must be set aside in a Rainy Day Savings Fund to help the state weather the next financial downturn under a voter approved measure. Turning now to the amtrak derailment in philadelphia, new video into the abc 7 newsroom this afternoon shows work crews continuing to clear the crash site two days after that derailment. Earlier today the death toll climbed to eight. All passengers are now accounted for as of this afternoon. Meanwhile, were learning details about the bay area ties one of the eight victims had abid gilani was in wells fargo for a year serving as Senior Vice President of its hospitality finance group. Caltrain is confirming the engineer of the train brandon bostian, ran some of their trains before 2011. He still worked for amtrak but caltrain contracted out train engineers at that time. New in the last hour, the ntsb says bostian has agreed to be interviewed by investigators. Abc News ReporterKaren Travers picks up our coverage now live from philadelphia. Reporter good afternoon. The focus of this investigation is on that train engineer, brandon bostian. His lawyer told abc news that bostian is really banged up. He has a concussion, but is fully cooperating with the police. We learned just a few moments ago that he will sit down with federal investigators. The ntsb said that will happen in the next couple of days. The official said today, heres one thing, theyre not going to make this like a serious formal interview. They want to sit bostian down and give him essentially a blank piece of paper and say tell us what happened. The death toll from tuesday nights amtrak derailment now stands at eight. The dog hit on a couple of spots, and we were able to find one other passenger in the wreckage. Reporter 43 people remain in the hospital but this morning mayor Michael Nutter announced all 243 passengers have been accounted for. The ntsb said today the trains speed increased for about a minute before the derailment. Investigators have good quality video from a forwardfacing camera at the front of the train. Mere seconds into the turn we could see the train tilting approximately 10 degrees to the right. And then the recording went blank. A system called positive train control can limit a trains speed. Its used on some rail lines. Today the ceo said that will change. That will happen on the northeast corridor by the end of this year. Reporter bostians attorney told abc news the engineer fully cooperated with police but sustained a concussion in the accident. He remembers coming into the curve. He remembers attempting to reduce speed. Reporter bostians lawyer said he was not using his cell phone or using drugs or alcohol. The eight victims have been identified, including rachel jacobs, a tech ceo and mother of a 2yearold and dr. Derrick griffith, an academic from new york. Only the two most damaged rail lines still remain at the accident site and they were being laser scanned in order to make a 3d image. Amtrak officials now have full control over the accident scene. The san mateo native is accused of using deflated footballs. Abc reporter elizabeth hurr has the latest from botch. Reporter the nfls conclusions are incomplete and lack context. The report found it is more probable than not that tom brady is generally aware of the release of air from patriots game balls. Bradys agent also on the attack calling the findings biased. I think it is wrong to criticize my independence just because you disagree with my findings. Reporter ted wells, the man behind the 243page investigation is standing by his report which resulted in the nfl issuing sanctions, including a fourgame suspension for brady and a 1 million fine for the patriots. And fans, well theyre backing the league. A new espn abc news poll showing 54 of all fans and skype69 of avid fans think brady cheated. If one of your biggest stars is doing this kind of thing and people think that hes cheated, that reverberates i think throughout the league longer than just this year. Brady reportedly hiring bigtime football lawyer Jeffrey Kessler who just last year helped reinstate both ray rice and Adrian Peterson after their suspensions. Today a lot of people celebrated the 21st annual bike to work day in the bay area. Some rode short distances, some were a little more ambitious ambitious. Amy hollyfield has the story. Reporter if youve looked at these people out your car window and thought this wasnt for you that your commute wasnt too far for a boik rideike ride, consider this group. These people biked from San Francisco to silicon valley. Heading out from 24th and Mission Going basically right next to the san jose airport. Its kind of a mixture of on the roads and on the day trail. Reporter he says the ride takes about four hours. A huge group made that trip as part of bike to work day. We saw mostly speerchsexperienced riders participating today but the idea is to show people that dont usually commute on their bike that they can do it too. Jennifer gave it a try this morning for the first time. She had to get from the excelsior district to the waterfront. I was a little intimidated by the distance so it was nice to be with some experienced cyclists who actually knew some routes and had some suggestions for me. Reporter even mayor ed lee rode his bike today. He said hes proud of the 443 miles of bike infrastructure. Were getting the best advice on safe routes and how to make them safer. Its winding down a little bit now, losing intensity but its still here. You can see a wide area of Stormy Weather concentrated mainly in the east bay and some portions of the south bay right now. A long expanse of highway 237 is going to be not good for commuters, parts of 101, 880 and 680 experiencing downpours and wet pavement as well. So its all moving from south to north through mainly through the east bay right now. Livermore getting a good dose of wet weather. Heres a live view from our east pay hills camera. Dramatic view of dark clouds and raindrops hitting the camera lens. Showers will taper off overnight and be partly cloudy and dry this weekend. Well see milder weather developing around the middle of next week. Lets look at the satellite radar composite image. Heres our wave of Stormy Weather pushing through the bay area but lets pull back and look at the second wave which is moving inland to our south. So Southern California will get a pretty good dose of Stormy Weather tomorrow. But this evening starting to forecast animation 7 00, well see clouds lingering, maybe a couple of isolated showers but the big storms will just diminish and dissipate as we get into the Early Morning hours tomorrow. Well have a spot or two of light showers but not very widespread. Tomorrow down south from san diego to palm springs well see areas of showers, thundershowers, heavy downpours and we have a winter storm warning in effect for the sierra until 5 00 friday afternoon. We expect another 3 to 6 inches of rain there above 6,000 feet. Chain requirements are possible. Back to the bay area, cloudy tonight and spotty showers are possible, but the heavy downpours and widespread showers are not likely. Theyll taper off. Overnight lows will be generally in the low 50s. And then tomorrow look for partly cloudy skies. Well see some nice breaks of sun. Way up to our north there could be some buildups of clouds and showers late tomorrow, but most of the bay area will be dry tomorrow. Well see high temperatures generally in the mid to upper 50s on the coast lower to mid60s around the bay and mid60s inland. Heres the accuweather sevenday forecast. We finally get quieter weather over the weekend. Mainly sunny days saturday and sunday. But not much of a warmup until the middle of next week when you see high temperatures climbing back into the mid70s inland and low 70s around the bay.
