What is your hope . My hope was that i might still have a house here. Reporter matt and crystal live on winchester street, just a few blocks from downtown lower lake. Here, home after home is gone. This one still underway, still under investigation and of course the main concern at in point is getting it contained. Live in lower lake, laura anthony, abc 7 news. Laura, thank you. Well on the phone now is Susie Blankenship a Fire Prevention specialist on the cal fire and weve been looking at it here today and we are seeing it live and we dont see any flames. Is the fire out. Not much smoke. The fire is not out. It is only 5 contained. So give us a better explanation of where it is burning at this point . The fire is burning in the rocky jerusalem far scars from last year. It is down in that drain and burning up into the scars from the two fires of last year. Give us a sense of whether or not any more houses or communities are at risk, immediately . At this time, immediately, no there is not. Obviously we want to remind folks to keep your head on a swivel and stay concerned or stay tuned to fire information and any updates that we get with what the weather and the fire is doing and which way it is pushing, in case we do need to evacuate them. Thank you, susie. Susie blankenship with cal fire. Thank you for coming on. We appreciate it. No problem. And there are three Evacuation Centers set up for displaced residents for the fire. Kelseyville high school and twin pine casino in middletown and the Seventh Day Adventist church in lake port and the Senior Center in clear lake was closed after power was cut to the location. Find the list on our website at abc7news. Com. Many are gathering at the moose lodge in clear lake oaks. It is not designated a shelter but they are in viting people there for food and care. And you could see where the current fire is burning in lake county. It is surrounded by the area burned during last years valley fire, rocky fire and jerusalem fire and it is burning in the scarred areas. The three fired combined burned about 170,000 acres in 2013. And when you look at the pictures, this is all hands on deck situation and teams of bay area firefighters are headed to lake county and that is having an impact on the local fire scene here. Matt keller has a closer look. Reporter work goes on for santa clara firefighters not deployed to lake county. Several crews put out a small kitchen fire in los gatos this morning and theyll work extra long hours in the bay area because last night two strike team from the county were sent to help. A total of 44 firefighters and 12 vehicles from san jose, sunnyvale, mountain view, palo alto, morgan hill and Santa Clara County fire are in lake county. They are planning on being up there for two weeks. Weve been called in to supplement the Forest Agency a lot more in the last few years than we ever have in the past. And two weeks ago our engine was down there and it seems to be that type of typical california summer where at any given day you need to be prepared. To give you an idea of how hard the firefighters work, they were deployed here from the los gatos station at 8 00 last night. This morning, the battalion chief here checks the dollagps e engine and saw they were fighting a fire fight in homes. And we have information on our website, a whole lot of information there, abc7news. Com. Well lets turn our attention to the weather with spencer christian, who has been keeping a close look on the Fire Fighting conditions. They are critical. Lets go to live doppler 7 hd, not much encouragement to be found in the weather conditions near the fire right now. This is how things shake up right now, the town of lower lake, 96 degrees and relative humidity down at a dangerously low 11 . So it is exceedingly dry there. The winds are relatively light out of the east northeast at 5 Miles Per Hour with occasional gusts up to 11 Miles Per Hour but massive fires like this generate their own isolated gusts that are Even Stronger and help fan the flames. Over the next few hours, in fact overnight, well see and track the surface winds and theyll increase a little bit over the next two or three hours and then diminish significantly overnight to two or three miles per hope so that is good news but it is hot and High Temperatures over the next several days are in the upper 90s which is not unusual this time of the year in that area. And of course it will remain very dry there. So hot and dry the next few days. Even with light winds, thats fire weather. Dan and ama. Spencer, thank you. Now there is a sign of progress today for crews battling the soberanes fire and they listed evacuation warnings for one area. This fire has been burning since july 22nd when a campfire got out of control. Today pg e helped with tactical burn operations and the fire has burned almost 75,000 acres and 57 homes and more than 400 others are at risk and more than 4,000 firefighters are still on the line. Now it has scorched more than 43 acres and nearly seven square miles, so it is large. The fire started two days ago south of Lake Nacimiento in San Luis Obispo county and it is now 10 contained. Carolyn tyler is live from Washington Square park with details on how the city is responding to this tragedy, carolyn . Reporter well this is where that accident occurred. And the city is responding by going tree to tree, inspecting conditions. A lot of people dont look up and see the trees are falling so it is really dangerous. Reporter helen and her young daughters moved away from this bench after learning this was where a 36yearold mother of two was sitting on friday watching her Children Play when a 100 pound tree limb broke off, hitting her on the head, causing critical injuries. Reporter this park regular said he was here when fridays accident happened. And he believes perhaps during our persistent drought the trees need more watering. If they are well watered how come we have so many brown branches up there that were cut off. Reporter this isnt the first time a branch has injured or killed someone. Aaron paskin represents the north beach district and believes the city should pay now to maintain trees rather than later, in tragedy and lawsuits. San Francisco Police are targeting bike chop shops. They launched the operation in the Mission District where some say the chop shops are everywhere. Abc 7 News Reporter vic lee is live at Police Headquarters with this story, vic. Reporter you could drive around the mission most any time of the day and you could see people working on bicycles on the streets. Presumably most of them are stolen. In fact, thousands of bicycles are stolen in San Francisco every year. Making this one of the biggest crimes in San Francisco and one of the hardest to prosecute. Why would anybody have this stuff. Reporter this sergeant is San Franciscos antibike theft unit and he hopes this is a series of regular bike theft abatements on chop shops and prior raids like this one are mostly in homeless encampments where there is a thriving black market in stolen bikes. Here at a street tent on 18th and shotwell, freedman and another officer have discovered a huge cache of bike parts and they are mixed to build new bikes and this, police say, is a classic chop shop. It is a lucrative business to steal highend bicycles and take them apart and sell the parts or mix and match the components just enough to sell a fully equipped bicycle to somebody else. Reporter the man who lives in the tent goes by the name john e. Was cited for possessing burglary tools, scratching off serial numbers and illegal encampment. John said the bikes were not stolen, that other people simply dropped them off. All from the bike shop reporter last year our i team aired an epidemic of bike thefts in the city and an estimated 4 million worth of bikes are stolen each year in San Francisco. And freezeman now used social media to reach out to bike theft victims and to locate where the chop shops are. And if today was an example, it seems to be working. Well the problem is, of course, proving that the bikes are stolen. Now, in case today, john said that people simply drop these bicycles at his tents on 18th and shotwell so if you are a prosecutor, how do you disprove that . It is a hard crime to prosecute and hard crime to charge. So bicycle groups say police are doing the right thing by launching operations like this to send the thieves a message that they are on top of it. Vic lee, abc 7 news. We know we need to lock our bikes. But what could we do besides just being careful and locking it up . Anything . Reporter well, in San Francisco, fortunately, there is a registry, so if you own a bike, you could register the serial numbers are the city if it is stolen and it happens to be found, police know how to locate you and return your bike. Back to you. Thank you, vic. Well this years super bowl 50 brought in at least 240 million to the bay area economy and that is according to a new report from a Research Firm hired by the host committee.
