And the jury did the right thing. Reporter Antolin Garcia torres was convicted of kidnap and murder even though the body wasnt found. It was on dna evidence. In 13 weeks of testimony its difficult to say what is most compelling. Its the whole package. Reporter the jury will convene next week to start the penalty phase. We were all holding our hands inside there. God answered the questions and answered our wishes and our prayers. Reporter he and many other volunteers spent countless weekends searching for sierras remains in the last five years. Many didnt know the lamar fraem but felt they needed to do something. More than 1100 searches were conducted. To have a guilty verdict . It was a combination of thrill and relief. Just hearing the stories from day one and feeling, being a dad myself and having a daughter and all of those emotions come out in you and you just hope that the jury comes to the right conclusion which i believe they did. Reporter sierras disappearance shook morgan hill. Her photograph was plastered all over the city. While those are gone, no one here has forgotten. Im glad they brought him to justice. Im glad they found him. I was worried they werent going to and that the family wouldnt have any closure. Reporter volunteers say they wont stop searching. They plan on using the information they learned from the trial to go back out and look for sierras remains. In morgan hill, jeannine de la vega, abc7 news. Take a look at a nearly five year time line. Sierra lamar disappeared on her way to a morgan hill bus stop on march 16 of 2012. Her phone was found the next day a few blocks away. May 21st, 2012, sheriffs deputies arrested Garcia Torres. Fast forward nearly two years to february 2014 he pleaded not guilty to murdering sierra lamar. On january 30 of this year, the trial finally got underway, closing arguments wrapped up last week and it took the jury only two days to reach todays guilty verdict. At same jury that convicted Garcia Torres will decide whether he should be sentenced to death or given life in parole. Theyll now have to regroup. This is especially important for the defense because they have been claiming throughout the whole time that since theres no evidence that a murder had been committed at all, because we dont have the body, the person cant be found guilty. Now the person is a convicted murderer, they have to change tactics and focus more on the person because now the jury is faced with the choice between death and life without parole. Jurors will begin hearing evidence in the penalty phase of the trial a week from today. We sent out a post alert on the abc7 news app. Download the app to get the latest news including the sentencing which is expected to happen next week. And this also follows after his testimony recently in front of congress in which he said that he felt nauseated at the thought that he may have affected the election. Remember, it was just general et he made it clear, key members of congress, that he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton, and those private emails that she held. He dismissed all charges, but in so doing, if she is such a damning condemnation of the former secretary of state, that critics were left baffled, how he could say that he was not pursuing any charges and that no reasonable person would bring charges according to him, after saying such forceful language about the former secretary of state.
