Weatherwise lisa argen says another warm day in San Francisco. She will have the full forecast come up in just a few moments. Three months after a horrific limo fire on the san mateo bridge we learned the findings of the criminal investigation. Five women died when they couldnt get out of that limo. Abc7 News Reporter vic lee has the story you will only see on abc7 news. Reporter the chp wanted to see if anyone was criminally negligent. They focused on the driver, orville brown, and the owner of the limousine company. Sources tell us at the end of july the chp decided there was no evidence to press criminal charges against the two men. Then suddenly browns estranged wife said publicly that the two argued on his cell phone shortly before the fire as he was driving. Im sure he could have saved them, you know. But he was on the phone. She charged that her husband was playing music too loudly and not paying attention. When her media interview surfaced, investigators renewed their robe of brown to see if he was too distracted to react quickly to the emergency. Sources tell abc7 news the chp reviewed his cell phone records and determined that he had not been on the phone with his wife during the fire, and that there was no other evidence to charge him criminally. The chps conclusion is that the tragic incident was the result of a mechanical failure. The stretched limousine burt into flames on the san mateo bridge on the night of may 4th the fire killed five women. Four others survived by crawling out of a narrow opening to the drivers compartment. This cell phone video shows the fire started in the rear of the limo. Witnesses say the back of the Lincoln Town Car was extremely low to the ground while it was traveling across the bridge. Sources with knowledge of the probe told us that the air springs, called balloons, in the rear of the limo somehow deflated, setting off a domino effect that led to the fire. This man manages a garage that services limousines. He explains what most likely happened when the balloons failed. These are air springs. They arent even air shocks. Air springs and they carry the weight of the car. One has a rupture on it, the whole car drops down to basically almost on the tire so the car with the weight, it bounced down too hard and ended up hitting the gas tank, which is right in this spot here. It might have hit the gas tank and then you see when it hit the ground it will create a spark. And that spark likely ignited the fire. Rick lee, abc7 news. If you assume demolition would be easy, here comes Andrew Gordon to ward us off. It will be very complicated. Millions of parts to join. A structure 8 1 4 miles long. It cost 77 million to bridge. Seven decades later the eastern span alone will cost almost 300 million to bring down. The deconstruction, if you want to call it that, will take place in three different sections simultaneously by three different contractors working from the top right down to the mud level at the bottom of the bay. Strangely enough income the top section the first piece they take off is likely to be the last one they put on. They are actually studying how the original span was built so they can take it apart in reverse order. But much more carefully because we are more environmental. The original steal has lead paint and the road bed has concrete and gasoline. They want to make sure none of it falls into the bay. As to what might remain. Yes, we want to leave a little for history. The spokesman told us one possibility. A park in place of an approach may be a nice memorial or a pier. These are artists conceptions. Dont question, will your new memorial be seismically sound . Yes, it will be, because it has nowhere to go. Except the history books. In oakland, wayne freedman, abc7 news. Interesting.
