When a kindergartner at a San Francisco school is diagnosed with cancer her teacher went beyond the call of duty to help her learn how to read. In fact, her little classmates did their part too. Abc7 news educational reporter Leeann Melendez has the heartwarming story of a Community Coming together to help one of their own. Nearly a year ago, olive diamond, now a first grader warnings diagnosed with a type of blood cancer. She was quickly pull out of school to begin treatment. At the time kara cooper was her Kindergarten Teacher at Francis Scott key elementary. It made me nervous and how we were going to continue her education and how i would keep her learning. During one of her visits to the familys home she came up with an idea. They had facebook on their computer. I had her work being at an ipad at home and at the table with her parents we thought this is something we can do together. Using two ipads, one at her home and the other in the classroom, the teacher was able to include olive in the daily lessons from the hospital or from home. Her classmates knew exactly what to do. She moved around the classroom with us and people who sat in the back or sat next to the table just took the ipad and put it places so she could see. Her parents say olive never missed a day of instruction. She was most fluidly reading certain level books by the end of kindergarten while she was getting aggressive chemo treatments weekly. The idea has inspired other teachers to do the same. For example, another teacher at the same school was recently diagnosed with cancer w the use of an ipad, she is now reading to her classroom every day from her home while undergoing chemotherapy. She will never forget how she stayed connected to her classmates and how this one teacher did everything she could to keep her connected. We never were able to fall. They will try to make it worth your while by integrating Loyalty Coupons into the app. It will be a winner. It will be a headache if you have ten different wallets on your phone. The apple watch also supports apple pay. In san mateo, Jonathan Bloom, abc7 news. 5 46, the time. Some muchneeded rainfall across the area. Lisa, yesterday you were taking a good amount fell down in san jose . Yes. Is there more on tap today . There is. A little more in the south bay. They picked up almost three quarters inch of rain in those 24 hours. Focus was on the south bay. Today the coastal hills and more of the north bay. But also more of a general light to moderate rain throughout the morning hours. Light doppler 7hd shows a band of light rain pushing through the bay, right now all the way out toward martinez, concord. But as we take you into San Francisco, you see its wet in the city, the Richmond District and just around the bay view. Heres the heavier cell out toward vallejo, highway 39 and as you go through veneer shaw and martinez, a little heavier rain taking you back westward and northward through the north bay, yountville, clear lake, santa rosa very light shower activity. And further westward we are looking at scattered showers from the peninsula down through sunnyvale, santa clara and saratoga, some light returns here. Finally looking at the east bay around fremont, newark and very light showers. So as the wave is sitting offshore, it is forecasted to continue to move closer to the coast, spread more showers. But the emphasis will be on the coastal hills, the north pay. We will get to the totals in just a moment. As we take a look outside theres the damplooking San Francisco. 56 degrees. 53 in san jose. Half moon bay sitting at 57. Emeryville a little wet, cloudy this morning. 53 in the north bay for napa. Petaluma 54. Good morning, concord. Livermore looking at 55 degrees. Our exploratorium camera with the cloudy skies, so we are looking at the showers this morning. More of this rain could be heavier, more embedded heavier rain throughout the north bay later on today and the coastal hills later on this morning. Then we will get into widely scattered showers. A break tomorrow and then the stronger, wetter, windier system comes our way on tuesday into wednesday. So we talked about the 24hour rainfall total in san jose. Los gatos picking up. 45. 64 in map paw. And over a tenth in San Francisco and oakland. A little more to come today, as we look at our radar and satellite picture you will see this little wave right here as it continues to push to the north. Thats what we are anticipating. And right here would be the 24 hour rainfall total through midnight tonight. So you notice that no sought toe could pick up as much as a tenth and halfinch San Francisco, a third on the coast and a tenth around livermore and san jose with perhaps a third down around morgan hill. So every little bit helps. Not a big snowmaker. Still, Winter Weather advisory through 7 00 tonight with 2 to 7 inches above 6,000 feet and light snow down to about 5,000 feet. Noontime still with us, 2 00 still showery. 4 00 still look at light showers. It takes the evening hours until things begin to dry out. Then we have a ridge thats really going to push in tomorrow bringing the southerly winds. A mainly dry day for your monday. Then we are looking at a much stronger system headed our way after the morning commute on tuesday. Take a look at that. Heavy rain, possible flooding, gusty winds and it will take us lou the entire day on tuesday and still showers behind it on wednesday. So temperatures today, with the southerly winds, be in the low 60s. It will be breezy at times. 63 in morgan hill. The accuweather sevenday forecast, more rain showers today, a break tonight and tomorrow. And the heavy rain tuesday, wednesday. This accompanies lots of wind, as well. We will look for the drying conditions the end of this week. I have to keep the days straight. Anyone heading up to do some sunday skiing in the sierra, is blue king looking good for the commute . It will be dicey on the way to there and tahoe and south too. Take it easy. Yes. Thank you. Turning to sports, this morning the raiders will try to win their second straight game. At 10 00 a. M.
