Reporter but the new state designation actually threatens the traditional cheer program in the Liberty Union high School District. The girls are athletes so for that to be possibly taken away from us, we were devastated. Reporter as districts grapple with the costs of implementing cheer as a sport, luhsd superintendent proposed cutting traditional cheer and implementing stunt cheer. It alarmed School Board Member ray valverde. You dont cut Something Else that has been successful in that district for years. Reporter traditional sideline cheer is more inclusive because more students can participate. Stunt teams are smaller. Stunt teams are very small. They allow up to 30 girls but usually theyre not that big at all so less girls would be able to be on the team. Reporter more colleges recognize traditional cheer for scholarships. This cell phone video shows heritage high taking 10th place at the National Competition in florida. Their coach says stunt cheer just isnt as established. Its not on the same level, so we dont feel like its an appropriate replacement. Reporter the issue goes before the school board at next weeks meeting. The superintendent did not return requests for comment. In the east bay, katie utehs, abc7 news. Smoke inhalation caused the deaths of all 36 victims in the ghost ship fire in oakland. The Alameda County medical examiner says burns or other injuries did not play a role. The victims were unable to get out of the burning warehouse. There was a party in several illegal Living Spaces inside. Investigators have still not announced what the cause what caused the december 2 fire or any potential criminal charges as well. Two Santa Clara County correctional deputies are on administrative leave this morning after being arrested last month for separate incidents. The Sheriffs Office said lionel groba hit an inmate in the face. It happened last august but his arrest came february 17 the mercury news reports Sergeant Robert little secretly recorded his supervisors last year in an attempt to get some leverage on them. The arrests come as the sheriff is working on reforms because of numerous allegations of jail misconduct, including the beating death of an inmate. Reuters reports the department of Homeland Security is considering a move to separate mothers and children who cross the border into the u. S. Illegally. Its that kind of idea that instills fear in the households of many immigrant families but now in San Francisco, theres help coming with a new hotline and Legal Assistance. Abc7 News Reporter lonni rivera has that story. Reporter an unexpected visit by i. C. E. Agents to a Community Center in the Mission District caused fear and panic in the neighborhood in january. Community activist maricela says calls have come through a new hotline about similar situations. Weve received over 450 calls since february 10 and it is really the community being afraid. Reporter the San Francisco immigrant legal and Education Network set up the hotline for residents to report i. C. E. Actions and to inform undocumented immigrants about their legal rights. We dont recommend you say anything if you are arrested. Just say your name and ask for an attorney. Reporter the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco launched a Legal Assistance center. The San Francisco office has joined 50 Mexican Consulates to calm fears and offer legal advice to mexican nationals. We want them to know their rights and we want them to have information from reliable sources. Reporter consulate workers are visiting communities. Many attorneys are working pro bono. Violent robbery attempt in San Francisco was caught on Surveillance Video. Take a look at this. Watch as a man with a gun and a hammer knocked over a woman who works at this Jewelry Store on grand avenue. Happened last month but police shared this Surveillance Video with us yesterday. They say the man waved his gun around, ordered employees to the ground and smashed display cases. He didnt take anything. Heres what it he looks like without his mask. No one was hurt in that incident. Special needs child was left on a school bus for three hours. The 4yearold student boarded the bus at the Nova Education center at 3 30 on monday. The driver parked near his own home with what he thought was an empty bus after he received a phone call from the dispatcher, the driver found the child sleeping underneath a seat. Police will not pursue any charges. City of san jose has Just Announced the hiring of a new director of Emergency Services. Ray riordan has 25 Years Experience in the bay area. A city spokesman tells abc7 news his hire just after last weeks flooding is purely coincidental. The citys last Emergency Services director left his post last november and there have been theres been a National Search underway. Assistant city manager dave sykes served for the city during the flooding. Happening today, san jose mayor sam liccardo will be back out in neighborhoods affected by last weeks flooding to help clean up. Today he will join volunteers in kelly park on center road. Members from Orchard Supply hardware will help repair damaged areas with 30,000 worth of donated items and materials. The cleanup is from 9 00 this morning until 2 00 this afternoon. A recent rains have caused a scary situation in a south bay neighborhood. A gas leak forced people to leave their homes near suncrest avenue just north of alum rock park. Abc7 News ReporterKatie Marzullo tells us it took pg e crews 10 hours to finish the repair work. Reporter it was well after dark when pg e crews finished repairing a gas leak in san jose. Diane was home when the leak happened. It was around is 1 1 00 a. M. Her landscaper started frantically ringing her doorbell. He saw some the earth come up, like it was blowing. Like kind of like a volcano would erupt. Reporter diane called 911. I saw the burst from the gas and there was a very strong gas smell. Reporter the Fire Department evacuated some homes and had other residents shelter in place while pg e shut off the gas. Despite several days of sunshine, pg e says the cause of the leak was rain. Because the soil is still saturated in some locations, you can get incidents like this where underground facilities are compromised and they can result in a gas leak. Reporter in this case, a 4inch steel pipeline came apart where it was welded together. 20 customers were without gas for most of the day and night. Diane wasnt especially inconvenienced by that, but she is worried about longterm pipeline safety. Certainly theres a concern with what happened with san bruno and we live in an area where the earth moves and so that would be my main concern. A somber fair well was held for an Alameda County sheriffs deputy killed on the job last week. An overflow crowd packed concord pavilleian yesterday to say goodbye to deputy mike foley. He was killed a week ago wednesday when he was hit by a prison bus on a dark, rainy morning. Deputy foley was remembered for his love of the outdoors and his dedication to his job and his family. I dont think my dad ever realized how many lives he touched. And how many people he and how many people he helped feel safe. In addition to his son michael, deputy foley leaves behind his wife tammy and his daughter tonya. He was 60 years old. Happening today, a march is scheduled in berkeley in support of President Trump. After the milo event and seeing some people i know get attacked and having their rights shut down, i knew something had to happen. Matt back on the Golden State Warriors team had his Court Date Pushed back until the end of june. His lawyers told the judge yesterday he has reason to believe barnes will be playing in the nba finals. Barnes is facing assault charges. Police say he was involved in an altercation at a bar in manhattan back in december. His court date is set for june 27. Barnes was signed by the warriors on thursday. Its a pretty cool opportunity today for fans of warriors super star steph curry, the reigning nba mvp. Part of the east sidewalk on the Golden Gate Bridge will be closed this weekend from 5 00 until 10 00 in the morning today and tomorrow. You can walk on to the sidewalk from either end of the bridge but only go about halfway across. The closure will allow crews to replace lights on the roadway. The west side walk will remain open for bicycles only. The work will be rescheduled if it rains. A storm of biblical proportions is looming in californias future. The last 200year storm hit for 43 days between 1861 and 1862, creating a huge lake where the Central Valley had been. State emergency experts are working on a longterm flood catastrophe plan. They got some practice recently with last months flood threat at the oroville dam, which forced thousands of people to evacuate. A longterm plan would help californians deal with Widespread Evacuations and other needs in the event of a mega storm. Experts say the state has a system in place that can be applied to all disasters, including a major earthquake. We really look at it as what do we need to be able to do and sometimes that doesnt have to be looked at differently for different scenarios. For example, being able to take care of or help communities take care of a lot of people in a shelter environment or what we call mass care. We may have to do that for an earthquake. We may have to do that for a flood. An earthquake catastrophe plan is already in place for the bay area. Drivers throughout the state are filing damage claims against caltrans thanks to potholes. The agency is responsible for fixing those potholes. The recent winter storms causing damage on the state highways. Last january, caltrans says it fixed 24,000 potholes in the state. This january, there were 35,000 that needed filling. In 2015, caltrans says it paid out nearly 370,000 to fill more than 4,000 damage claims. This year, expected to cost a lot more. The storm system still to the north and west of us here and it will continue to slide to the south, pushing through the north bay first and then into the south bay by later on this afternoon. So, as a result, its a big snow maker in the Sierra Nevada from 4 00 tomorrow through 4 00 monday. 8 to 14 inches above 3,000 feet. 1 to 2 feet above 4,000 feet and were looking at about 3 feet over the passes and in fact the wind gusts could be as much as 100 miles an hour so once again, local resorts doing pretty well. 15 inches at tahoe city, 19 inches at southlake so be advised if youre headed to the mountains, good idea to come home on monday. Diablo, highway 29, and this all happens behind the system thats going to push through the bay area today. Thunderstorms are also possible so we dont have a whole lot of moisture associated with this cold system but throughout the day today, the showers will increase and well see highs milder today, upper 50s to low 60s ahead of the system and then behind it, its colder. We have scattered showers. Well see less in the way of rainfall, but its really going to be blustery out there. Its a 1 on our storm impact scale for today and tomorrow, so the cold showers, the gusty winds, lower snow levels and the chance of not only a thunderstorm but perhaps some hail. So as we go through our computer an nation hourbyhour, youll notice about 9 00 this morning, could see a few spotty showers from San Francisco over to the east bay but for the most part, the snow levels already beginning to lower around mendocino county, lake county, and this is about 5 00, heres the weak line, the cold front thats pushing through the bay area. 9 00 tonight, its in the south bay and behind it, overnight hours, we have some light showers into tomorrow morning.
