Protests are expected in san diego today outside of representative darryl ices office. The republican introduced the initial draft to replace the Affordable Health care act last month. Now that the plan has been unveiled publicly, abc7 News Reporter lilian kim looks into what it mean for california. Reporter if House Republicans succeed in repealing and replacing the Affordable Care act, millions stand to lose their Health Insurance. Under obamacare, about 20 Million People, 22 Million People got health care, and i think more or less over a few years, more than half of those will eventually lose that. Reporter but speaker of the house paul ryan says the American Healthcare act will help drive down costs, encolonel competition and expand access to care. The bill would immediately eliminate the individual mandate, repeal the Obamacare Penalties and subsidies over three years, create tax credits instead to help americans buy insurance and limit federal funding for medicaid which in Alameda County alone could affect thousands of people. They said whatever they replease obamacare with was going to be better, and this really makes it a lot worse for people in Alameda County, california, to across the country. Reporter the bill is no slam dunk. The big question is where lawmakers from red states with big Medicaid Programs will support it. Once people have something, its really difficult to take it away. I mean, you know, so, i think its going to be a hot potato. And here is a new cnn orc survey out just this morning and it shows that the country is pretty evenly split when it comes to at least one big part of obamacare. 50 of those polled say they oppose are moving the requirement to obtain coverage, otherwise known as the mandate. 48 are in favor of it. The main question surrounding president trumps new travel ban this morning, will it pass the legal test. President trump signed the order yesterday. This time, iraq is not one of the six nations targeted. Anyone with a visa granted before january 27 can still travel to the u. S. As for refugees, the order will not prioritize them based on their religion. A law professor at the university of texas says removing language that gives priority to religious minorities helps address concerns but with the focus on muslim majority countries, it still leaves the appearance that it is a muslim ban. Civil Rights Groups say it is still discriminatory. The people who are impacted by this are members of our community, theyre part of us. And so we cant just sit by and let this ban go forward. The state department, homeland security, and Justice Department officials defended the new order as a necessary measure to improve public safety. They say the countries implicated have some sort of ties to terrorism.
