He allegedly warned him about Oakland Police prostitution sting operations, to keep her out of trouble. His attorney said the husband and father knows he made mistakes. He absolutely understands and accepts he made some terrible personal decisions, but does not feel that those decisions rose to the level of felony conduct. And based on what we saw today, i think hes right. Reporter he says he would love to work on an agreement with the d. A. s office to avoid trial, but he doesnt envision them resolving the case by him pleading to a felony. The sikh man victimized in the hate crime attack in richard mond last year said he still considers the attackers his brothers despite what happened. The two men la blank and chase little were sentenced to three years in prison today. They admitted to a being thatting this man last september. Police say la blank and little punished him, knocked off his tur ban and cut his hair. He was stabbed in the hand and doctors had to amputate his pinky. It is very tender to touch. So when writing or, you know, typing or anything like that, its very painful. I have never seen mr. Little or mr. La blank show any remorse. He says it may take the rest of his life to heal from the attack. It was a difficult day in court for the parents of sierra lamar. A lot of emotion as they told jurors how sierras death has left them so badly. The penalty phase is underway to determine if Antolin Garcia torres gets the Death Penalty or life without parole. Abc7 News Reporter david louie was in court as jurors and spectators cried. Reporter they knew as they arrived at the courthouse this would be an emotional day. It was time for steve and marlene to give impact statements to let them know how sierras death affected them. She found it difficult to contain her sorrow as she talked about sierra as a caring person who loved to dance. The hardest part was watching a video of sierra smiling and lip syncing to a song. Its the first time i heard her speak live on a video so that was really hard. Ive been avoiding that because its been so painful. Just to look at videos of her. But ive been doing it a lot lately the past months. Reporter father steve also fought back tears watching the video describing sierra as goofy and playful with an infectious laugh. Hard, still hard for a long time. Probably only have been able to watch videos of sierra in the last year or so. And it still is hard, still cry. Reporter tears filled the eyes of several jurors while convicted killer of Antolin Garcia torres avoided eye contact and didnt look at the video. The part of the case is now about impact on the jury. What is their moral decision. So, theres no question the fact that they were emotionally affected by this testimony will likely have an impact on their decision. A man is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation after pouring gasoline on people eating at a dennys restaurant in hayward and then trying to light them on fire. It happened yesterday morning at the restaurant on industrial boulevard. Police say other patrons stopped the man, thank goodness, from politing t lighting the fire. Would have been disastrous. A motive isnt clear but hes being tested psychologically. A judge set bail at 1 1 2 Million Dollars for a man arrested in a series of car fires in contra costa county. James bishop iii is charged only in connection with three fires, but investigators say he could be connected to as many as 40 fires. It is about to get a lot more competitive to get into the university of california system from out of state. Today regents approved the firstever limit on out of state and International Student enrollment. It addresses a longtime complaint from california students who say they are being squeezed out of a spot by nonresidents who pay higher tuitions. The out of state and international limit is now 18 . U. C. Berkeley and ucla will have some leeway with that cap. And speaking of u. C. , there is vindication for the office of the president. The state auditor says there was nothing criminal about how Janet Napolitanos office handled a huge surplus which was kept from the public. But the auditor does have harsh words for the office. Today the state auditor Elaine Howell explained how her investigation into a 175 million undisclosed surplus may have led some in the press and lawmakers in sacramento to believe there was some wrongdoing. And it was very difficult for us to get access to that information, and they kept saying, well, some of this is confidential. Our statutes allow us to keep confidential information. Reporter the state auditor said the 175 million consisted of reserves and discretionary funds. Nothing was done illegally, but criticized the lack of transparency by central administrators. Certainly there was a failure to disclose to the board and to the public this additional money or this left over money at the end of the year and how those funds would be used in the future. Reporter the auditor also questioned some of the expenses made by napolitanos office which should have shown more prudency. The issue dates back to 2014 and involves messaging application whats app. Facebook told european officials that wouldnt be able to match up existing user profiles with whats app phone numbers, but facebook did exactly that two years later. The trees were infested with bark needles and at risk of falling. They had to be removed before the busy summer camp season began. That camp has been run by the San Francisco department of parks and rec since 1923, and is located in Yosemite National park about 45 miles from the valley.
