Now the honor is being extended to a special olympian at the foothills high school. As Laura Anthony found out, that young man is wearing it proudly. 18yearold andrew brum just told us putting on his letter man jacket makes him feel really good. I feel like its meant to be on me. I worked six years so hard doing it. It makes me feel happy. And a better part of me. [cheering] brum has been competing as a special olympian in basketball and bowling since he was 12. But at foothill and most high schools, varsity letters were given only to those students who achieved certain standards at their respective sports at school. And one day i was driving in my car and i thought why cant he have one . Thats when andrews mother decided to make a suggestion to the high school principal. I was thinking about the pictures and how families take pictures of their seniors with their letterman jackets. In this case we have a young man who a committed and played the whole season, and he is deserving to represent foothill athletes everywhere. The letter means a lot to andrew and sends a message to the larger student body. Its all about meaningful inclusion, and when you are playing sports in your community, for a student its their school, and to be recognized by that entity is very, very important. Hes so proud. Yeah, he loves it. He wants to wear it all the time. Even if its 95 degrees out. It makes me feel happy to start this for all special olympians in all different cases. Now other schools in the area plan to follow foothills lead and award letters to the students who made their mark in the special olympics. In pleasanton, Laura Anthony, abc7 news.
