The focus moves to berkeley where an anti marxist rally is planned this afternoon, but yesterday thousands of people turned out in San Francisco to promote an anti hate message. Abc 7 news has a roundup of the protests. Reporter the fencing and barricades went up and heavily armed police were on the streets and rooftops. San francisco was ready. Im very proud of how we have communicated and how we have responded to the will of the people to get out and express themselves, but do so peacefully. Youre here because the racists arent. Reporter earlier, counter protesters chanted in unison as word spread the right wing organizer of the Patriot Prayer rally didnt show up. At alamo square for a scheduled event. This after cancelling the crissy field rally too. Im not here to fight them. I just want them to see that i am a queer white woman who is not here to take their crap. Reporter but not everyone had the same plan. Some were ready for a confrontation. At alamo square, there was one arrest, and police had to push the crowd back. One person was detained after jumping a barricade, while one group dispersed. Another grew. Hundreds marched through the castro and eventually arrived at civic center plaza, joining a second group for the peace, love and understanding rally. We wanted to show up, but also show up in a place that would be safe for our family. Reporter children played and families gathered for the shared message. Which the mayor supported while continuing to denounce the Patriot Prayer rally. If people want to have a stage in San Francisco, they had better have a message that contributes to peoples lives. Sky 7 was over the crowd as they staged a diein at 21st and mission. After briefly blocking the intersection, they continued through the neighborhood. A group also burned a pinata that was designed to look like President Trump. 6 03 is our time. The counter protesters were in the odd position of demonstrating against something that didnt happen. Thats because the leader of Patriot Prayer called off the official rally, but he did show up and meet with his supporters. Reporter the leader of Patriot Prayer started the day with kyle chapman, known as based stickman. Chapman was charged with a felony. He posted a 135,000 bail through facebook live, the two men explained why the rally at crissy field was cancelled. They set the rally up on crissy field, to where there would be the highest chance of violent interaction between our people and the counter protesters. Reporter security concerns also caused gibson to cancel the backup rally at alamo square. Then he held a News Conference in pacifica. He blamed the media and politicians for misrepresenting the Patriot Prayer movement. To call us White Supremacy made San Francisco more dangerous. And you have a mayor who says were hateful and violent. Reporter two hours later, gibson arrived at crissy field, were several dozen prayer supporters were waiting. He left as tensions mounted between a few members of the crowd and counter protesters. A Strong Police presence, including officers in riot gear, helped maintain control. The rallys organizer has urged people to stay away, fearing violent confrontations. A counter protest is scheduled at the park later today. People gathered there yesterday, calling for peace. Leaders from several faiths led people in songs and prayers. They hope their message helps reduce potential tensions. The east bay times who reported the story could not verify the statements. Council members add the city has been swamped with calls expressing outrage over wylers alleged comments. Southeast texas under water in houston a flash flood emergency, man holes overflowing, streets turned into lakes. Nearly impossible to drive through. The citys mayor urging residents to stay home. The streets are treacherous. It makes absolutely no sense for anyone to be out on the road, unless its an emergency. Reporter these people rescued from an apartment complex, dozens more in desperate need of help. How many we got coming . Reporter the storm packing a punch. Im melancholy. I cant believe this is happening. And i have no apartment. My apartment was decimated. Reporter rockport, where harvey came ashore, a mangled ghost town. Roofs ripped off homes and buildings. Boats destroyed. The wind was probably, i dont know, 100plus, maybe 130, 140. There was a couple of times when it was probably going faster than that. Reporter in austin, an eerie scene. The skate capital under a cloud of darkness. Shelters set up for those in need. Texas Governor Greg Abbott lending a hand. We will take care of our fellow texans. But we do it as a team. Reporter right now about 70,000 people are without power. That number is growing as we speak. And more than 1,000 people have called police for help. But First Responders cant get to them, as i said before. So thats becoming a real problem. Reporter you know, i mentioned before yesterday, in my neighborhood, a tornado tore through southwest of houston and a suburb. And 55 people lost the roofs to their homes, just collapsed. And people have been just talking to each other on facebook and saying, hey, anybody that needs to stay in my house, they dont know each other and are having people stay in their home. So theyre just it is it is nice to see everybody coming together at this time, because, you know, all we have are each other. A lot of times the firefighters, the police, cant get to you because these roads are flooded. Almost all the highways here are flooded, filled with water. People cant get around. And you mentioned the damage. How has communication been from the city, as well as First Responders . Reporter you know, thats been good. They have been keeping us in the know, talking to people, actually the last time there was public outreach, they said dont go up in your attic. People have been rushing up to their attics, past the second floor, to get away from rising into the awarflood waters with children. And they said if you have to do that, get on your roofs, so we know youre there. And putting out that message to people here and there through social media, saying just wait for us, were going to try to get there. Now that its daylight, they can actually see what theyre dealing with, because in the darkness, you couldnt tell, as you know, a Police Officer how bad it would be for you to drive down the road. We had people driving the wrong way on the interstate, because one side would be flooded, the other wasnt. So you could imagine the kind of trouble that could lead to. First responders from across the bay area heading to the storm zone in texas. Well have more about the invaluable rescue tool theyre bringing with them. This weekend, hundreds celebrated the opening of a unity center in sacramento. Its located at the california museum. Its dedicated to the states Diverse Group of people, customs and culture. The museum encourages visitors to take an interactive stance on hate and intolerance. The mayor of sacramento says he got involved with the idea early on in response to a wave of hate crimes in the area, dating back to the 1990s. We wanted a center, a unity center, where the tens of thousands of kids who come to the capital every year from around the state could walk across the street and have an experience that would affect their hearts and minds. The mayor also says the timing of the Centers Opening couldnt be better, because of whats going on across the country. The center plans to host several discussions about civil rights. Now to Hurricane Harvey. Firefighters and paramedics are headed for texas to lend a helping hand in the wake of harvey, which has flooded homes and left dozens missing. We have the story. Reporter these firefighters from agencies all over the bay area are packing up and heading out on a 30hour drive to texas. The 70person task force activated by fema will provide support in the disaster zone of Hurricane Harvey. I suspect we will be doing some search and rescue operations in waterinundated areas. Well also be providing mass health care. Reporter at a warehouse in oakland, they pack up food, medical supplies and lifesaving equipment like saws and rope. Task force 4 helped out in other disasters, like 9 11 and hurricane katrina. One of the most important tools, canines. Well take four dogs with us down there to help locate trapped victims, live victims, and any of the destruction. Reporter this is the first time 11yearold keeno will be deployed. Theyre priceless. They can search an area much faster and more efficiently than any human r any scientific tool. Reporter firefighters could be in the hurricane zone for weeks. This is where theyll stay. Theyre bringing dozens of these shelters. This is where rescue teams will sleep. The tents are also used as medical clinics and for office space. Pick that one up. The Border Patrol has found a new illegal tunnel used to smuggle people from mexico into the u. S. The tunnel was found near the owe at a mesa crossing east of san diego. Border control agents discovered the tunnel after they encountered 23 chinese nationals and 7 mexican nationals that entered the country by using the passageway. Its now been shut down. Authorities believe it was a branch of another tunnel that was discovered recently by the mexican government. An amtrak train hit and killed the driver of a pickup truck in rodeo. The collision happened at the Railroad Crossing at san pablo avenue and california street. A sacramentobound capital corridor train hit the truck, which was stopped on the tracks. Railroad police are investigating why the driver stopped. Peninsula congresswoman jackie spear made a call for peace and unity during a field trip with some important constituents. Spear took more than 100 School Children to the rosie the riveter memorial in richmond to commemorate womens equality day. There she spoke of this weekends protests and the deep divisions throughout the country. So this is a time for engagement. And thats what youre seeing throughout the bay area. And love will win out. At the trip to the memorial, spear marked the end of the womens suffrage in the u. S. And said more work needs to be done to end the wage gap between women and men in the workplace. In walnut creek, a crowd gathered at civic park to form the words end hate in response to the events in charlottesville. The crowd wanted to fight divisiveness and speak out against hate. If youre from the east bay, you might recognize mike. Hes well over 20 feet tall, and today hes turning 50. Mike was popular long ago as one of the many urban Roadside Attractions in the area. He stood vigil outside a car wash and tire shop in hayward for decades, just a couple blocks away from the doggy diner. Big mikes big birthday bash is from 10 00 to 5 00 near the hayward airport. Everyone is welcome for cake and a factory tour. In the north bay, high temperatures expected today have prompted officials to open a cooling center in santa rosa. The center will be open from 11 00 this morning until 6 00 tonight at the Finley Community center on west college avenue. Officials say water will be available, and people can bring in food ready to eat as the kitchen will not be accessible. There will be free wifi, but no tv.
