Although they have been ordered off of the shelves, we found them readily available. Abc7 news anchor ama daetz has the details. Popular skin creams are designed to do everything from softening skin to fading sun damage. But now the fda is concerned about a certain class of creams that advertise the ability to whiten or lighten skin color. They are predominantly used in populations of asianamericans or in patients with latinamerican descent and middle eastern decent. This doctor is a dermatologist with Pacific Medical center in San Francisco and said the creams were named like diana and bleach creams have been found to contain high amounts of mercury. Mercury can cause neurological problems, kidney problems. In one study of asians in alameda county, researchers found elevated levels of mercury in their systems, as high as 100 times normal. Earlier this year the fda stepped in, issuing a warning about the mercury danger in specific skinwhitening creams and ordered them off the levels. Off the shelves. The doctor said the creams are often manufactured overseas with little oversight. When we searched for them by name on the internet, we found several still listed for sale on various websites. Lot of patients will bring them back from other countries and then you have absolutely no control of how these are brought into america. The fda said retailers could face prosecution for deliberately importing the creams, but they admit the Internet Sales sites are harder to track. Experts said avoid products that mention mercury or mercury chloride on the label and avoid any product that does not provide a full list of ingredients. Ama daetz, abc7 news.
