The eclipse coming up and the Womens National title game. Robin, looked like it was a lot of fun. Robin in your old stomping grounds, george. The moon, the sun, aligning. So are the stars here in cleveland. It was an incredible title game. South carolina could not be stopped on their way to an undefeated, perfect season. Caitlin clark and her iowa teammates, they gave them a great game. I had a court side seat. I was right next to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback jalen hurts. Hundreds of thousands of people descending on cleveland for the game. Coach dawn staley just arrived. Shes gonna be joining me live in just a moment. Now the attention turns to the eclipse. Cleveland, are you ready . They are ready yes because we are in the path of totality so the burlington vermont. Thats where world news anchor david muir is for us. Hes going to begin our Team Coverage as we count down to the big moment. Good morning, david. David good morning, robin. Its great to be with you this morning from beautiful vermont. Cant wait to be on the air with you later for the abc news special event, eclipse across america. This will be different this time. 15 states, from texas all the way to maine, nearly 32 million americans live in the path of totality. The shadow will be wider because the earth is closer to the moon this time which means the shadow is larger when suddenly there is darkness, temperatures drop. Americans together collectively all experience something we wont see for another 20 years. This morning families across america in the path of totality. Were all ready to go david 15 states, from tbgs to maine, setting out to witness the total Solar Eclipse. Are you ready for the eclipse . Yeah coming from florida. That way we can see the Solar Eclipse. We made it to dallas. We are in the path of totality. David but what exactly will they see . How does it happen . We have an astrophysicist and National Geographic explorer. A Solar Eclipse is when the moon moves between the sun and earth and its shadow is cast on us. David that shadow is pure cosmic coincidence. It happens because the sun is also 400 times farther away, making the two appear the same size. This means the moon completely covers the sun during a total Solar Eclipse, with only the suns outer atmosphere, the corona, visible from earth. One cool difference between the 2017 eclipse and the one that were going to see now is that the moon is closer to the earth. So its going to cast a larger shadow. So both totality will be longer and the actual path will be almost double what it was in 2017. David this time that shadow is about 123 miles wide on the ground, moving at a speed of nearly 2,000 miles per hour. The closer you are to that center line, right through the middle of that shadow, the longer youll be in complete darkness. In some places, it will last up to four minutes, 28 seconds. Nearly 32 million americans live in the path of 100 ppbtd totality. Look how far the eclipse spreads in both directions. That means hundreds of millions of americans today will see some version of this eclipse. Part of this is, its the magic of the eclipse. Part of its about family and being together for a special event. David he so right. Were about to witness this as a country. Were going to talk a lot about this. You want to be careful with your eyes. They say this every several years when we witness one of these eclipses. You want those eclipse glasses. These are thousands of times darker than your typical pair of sunglasses. Your retina doesnt sense pain when youre looking up at the sun so your eye will not know, wont send messages of the damage youre doing. So really, be careful with your family out there in the path of totality. I mentioned earlier, 32 million americans in the path where it will cast a shadow, skies will go dark, temperatures will drop. They say earth will stop whistles, the crickets will start chirping. The animals can get confused. Michael, rebecca, george, the other thing to keep in mind, even if youre not directly in that path of totality, which will be wider than weve seen before, Scientists Say about 99 of americans will witness something today, whether its a partial eclipse, even just a piece of what were not going to see for another two decades. Michael thank you for all of that, david. Look forward to watching your special coverage of the path of totality and the eclipse today. All that information rebecca he will wear his glasses. We know he will. Michael he will wear his glasses. I like his advice to parents. Protect your eyes. Great advice from david. Were going to get the eclipse florida. Ginger is in carbondale illinois. So Caitlin Clark, if youre out there, you are one of the goats of our game and we appreciate you. [ cheers ] theres a lot to be proud of but, you know, theres going to be tears. It is sad that this is all over and this is the last time ill put on an iowa jersey. Robin clark sharing this photo of her jersey on instagram after the game writing, ill miss ya. You all were first team in a National Title game to be losing by double digits to go on to win by double digits. You said this is an unlikely group. What did you mean by that . This group, for the entire season i dont know why i said this, but i felt it at the very beginning of the season. Give me three words to describe this team. I said expect the unexpected. To be respectful to people and respectful to the game of basketball or else, you know, youre not gonna get it. You are not going to meet your mark. Youre not going to make your family members like extremely disappointed. But luckily, thank god, they got it in time enough to do something about it. The pilots didnt see any of it. She was like, oh my gosh. We got a piece of engine hanging off apparently. Reporter this video recorded during the landing back in denver. The cowling ripping further slapping against the wing before becoming completely undone. Southwest says the plane landed safely after experiencing a mechanical issue and says our Maintenance Team is reviews the aircraft. The airline sending passengers to houston on another plane. These panels were not properly secured. When there was enough air coming over the airplane as it took off, these panels ripped apart and came back over the wing. Last month flames shooting out of the engine of this united flight. That Alaska Airlines door plug popping off midair in january. These incidents remain rare. It seem likes we see more of them but its because everybody has a movie camera in their pocket. Reporter its not yet clear what caused this engine cover to rip open. Just hours from now thats gonna happen. Gio is in one of the popular destinations. He is in indianapolis. Good morning to you, gio. Gio hey, robin, good morning to you. We are at the indianapolis motor speed way right now with all of the eclipse watchers. [ cheers ] are you excited . They are very excited, very important to the Space Program in this country. Take a look at whats happening here, too. All of these campers spending the night here, ready for this exciting eclipse. Totality time gio eclipse mania is upon us. This trip has been on our calendars literally for 2 1 2 years. Gio people traveling from mexico to maine. Travel to this eclipse is beyond the previous eclipse. Searches peaked up over an 1100 increase. Gio millions of travellers expected, a potential for a huge economic boost. Economists are predicting that people are going to spend 1. 5 billion. These people all need hotels and they also need to eat. And lot of these small towns are capitalizing by selling souvenirs. Gio here in indianapolis, theyre expecting a Record Number of visitors, more than 500,000, saying thats more than the super bowl and indy 500 put together, plus the state fair. Indy 500 legend tony canaan ready for totality. I have never seen an eclipse live. My expectations are high. Gio people traveling from all around the globe. 12,500 miles to get to texas. Gio 9yearold wes carter flying from australia to texas. Flying through singapore, through l. A. And then onto houston. Hi we are headed from new jersey to texas to see the eclipse gio they are all making their way to camp out in waco. Mother daughter duo even traveling to mexico. We are so ready. Gio you travel all over the place together, just for this. Yep. We went to argentina, nashville. Gio this is an exciting time. So many people are waiting for this. He needs this. Gio i do okay. Thank you. George more on how animals will react. Scientists around the country ready for the opportunity to study animal behavior. And zoo miami wild life expert ron mcgill join us to el the us what to expect today. Most animals arent going to do anything at all. People are saying all of the bats will come flying out of the caves. [ laughter ] thats not going to happen. Generally speaking, this is like a delayed jet lag for these animals. Its like when you fly to the other side of the country, 2 a. M. , the sun is wide open. You go, oh my gosh. Youre a little out of whack. Weve seen changes in the past. For instance, birds might stop flying, might stop singing. On the the flip side you might have an owl going hoo hoo. Youll hear crickets maybe start calling. Fire flies might start to light up. Remember, the sun is the clock for animals. Thats what gets them going. But its such a short amount of time. We dont have a lot of data, so we dont know. Michael there are zoos not on the path of totality but theyre setting up cameras to study animals. What do you think theyll learn . Absolutely. Like i said, they did it back in 2017 at the South Carolina zoo. This will be at the ft. Worth zoo that will be in the full path. We really dont know. This is something that happens very infrequently. When it happen, its only a few minutes. People will say, i saw the tortoises mating. They were mating an hour before then, too, or two hours after that. Its hard to say whether its coincidence or the eclipse. Bees will go back to hives. Horses and cattle will go back into the stable and think, hey, its getting dark. For most animals its like a big storm is approaching. They might hunker down or whatever but its not like an epiphany, the world is changing. Most animals wont do much at all. Rebecca unless you talk to your dog and get the inside scoop from your pet dog. I would keep them inside. I would turn on the light, turn on some music. Just keep them calm. If they dont see the change, they wont react to it. George my daisy will sleep through it anyway. [ laughter ] thank you very much. Going to have more on eclipse coverage coming up. Coming up later eclipse chasing is a Family Affair for whit johnson. His mom sharon is taking the whole family on an eclipse adventure. A new study that finds patients with obesity and diabetes related Heart Failure saw progress when they took semaglutide. The drug in ozempic and wegovy. Louis aronne is here. Pretty exciting tell us about it. Its very exciting, george. We finally have evidence that people with obesity, diabetes and Heart Failure can get significant improvement. Theyre less likely to be hospitalized. Less likely to visit an emergency room if they take semaglutide. George it seems like we take a story every day on Something Else that wegovy and semaglutide can help solve. What other things are being looked at . There are many. Preventing diabetes. One study showed a 75 reduction of developing diabetes in a trial. Fat in the liver, the leading cause of a liver transplant. Dementia is another one caused by inflammation. The list goes on and on. George i know youve been working on these issues for decades. Why do you think these drugs are showing such promise . They are showing promise because they affect body fat and reduce body fat. Turns out fat cells produce dozens, hundreds of hormones that are critical for the normal function of the body, but when theyre present in excess, they cause disease in many different organ systems. George its not just semaglutide. Theres a range of other drug, right . There are more than 50 drugs. Semaglutide is the first very effective glp1, but there are many, many others that are coming that are even more effective. Some are going to be twice as effective as semaglutide. George that is just incredible. Thank you for coming in this morning. Lets go to robin in cleveland. Robin george, thank you so very, very much. I have been covering Womens Basketball for, whew, a very long time. How about this picture of me during the 2001 final four . That was my years at espn covering the big game. The big game has always had die hard fans, but this year, you gotta admit, its been a game changer. The womens game taking center stage at march madness, breaking records and changing the perceptions about the popularity of womens sports. A sport forever changed. The South Carolina gamecocks taking home the ncaa championship overnight. Undefeated South Carolina has won its third National Championship robin but it was all of womens College Basketball that emerged victorious. No one has done more to swell the popularity of this game than Caitlin Clark. Robin 22yearold Caitlin Clark bringing a whole new audience to the sport, captivating millions with her dominating unabashed play, breaking records, not just on the court. Gets her name in the record books one more time robin viewership for games sky rocketing and iowas ticket prices increasing more than 160 from last year as clark raced to break the alltime scoring record in division i basketball. Fans lining up for hours to watch her make history. This for College Basketball history [ cheers ] robin the shift is monumental in the sport that historically has not garnered the same fervor for female players as it has for the men. Because of Caitlin Clark, sports are cool for girls in a way we have never seen before. And maybe just as important the title 9. Robin we were talking about how i covered this game back in the day. What were seeing right now on this floor, the attention, whew clark, along with lsus angel reese, Uconns Paige Bueckers and Camilla Cardoso representing the next generation of women athlete, raised in the age of title 9. A law banning sex discrimination in educational activities. These are young women who received title 9 on full blast. They had the coaching, the interest from their parents. They are really the product of what this nation has created because of title 9 and how the nation has fallen in love with what it has created. Clark, step back three, you bet robin iowas final four game against uconn friday drawing in 14. 2 million viewer, breaking espn viewership records making it their most viewed basketball game ever. Iowa survives connecticut robin clark, now gearing up for the wnba draft as the probable first pick, walking off the court she forever changed one final time as a collegiate athlete. The coolest part for me on this journey is just, we Start Playing in front of 55,000 people and now were ending it probably playing in front of 15 Million People or more on tv. It just continues to get better and better and better. Robin and well have to wait and see if the ratings from yesterdays game, the title game, waiting for those numbers to come in. May have been the Third Straight record. Well see. May just be the beginning though. When you think of all the little girls who were at home watching caitlin and camilla and angel and oh my gosh, so many talented young women. Juju watkins from usc, phenomenal freshman. The list goes on and on. You know this, michael, and guys. Being there in the studio and when the guys behind the scene, you know who im talking about. You, dave, you, nick. They were jawing with me about the womens game like they did with the men. That has never happened before. Thats just another mark of how it has changed. Michael yeah. You feel the shift. Robin, it was must see tv. Absolutely must see tv. Robin that tells you something when snoop dogs there. Come on. Michael i saw you yesterday with snoop dog. Rebecca i did, too. You did a great job. Michael you were in the same room. Robin not that kind of show. Not that kind of show. Michael all right, robin. Thank you for that. Im going to ginger. Hey, ginger. Ginger thank you, michael. No snoop dog here, but id say weve got a great forecast. I have got students behind me. From Carbondale Community high school. Lets start with the path of totality. Mexico has more clouds, so has texas. Dallas, you might squeak out one if you get between clouds before the storms move in later tonight. Later from arkansas through central illinois, weve got mostly clear skies. I do see some high cloudiness which i think well see more of. You can still see an eclipse through that. Lets keep those. More clouds as you get up around the lake. Decreasing cloud coverage in cleveland. Increasing for burlington. Those are high clouds, too. Best spot on the map still looking like holton maine. We do want to talk about safety. Its very important. If you are not in path of totality you must always have your glasses on. If you are in the path, you can remove the glasses only when the full totality is happening. For us its only 4 08 which is nearly double that we got last time. The glasses have to be marked iso123122. If you dont have glasses you can go to our wb site. Theres a qr code on your screen. Has a way to make a pin hole. All you need is a cereal box. Its quite easy. Are you ready . [ cheers ] robin now were going to talk about eclipse chasers. The people who travel near and far to experience the totality each time it comes around. Whit is here with me in cleveland. You know someone that were talking about very, very well. Whit eclipse chasers fondly refer to themselves as umbre philes, for the love of the shadow underneath the eclipse. I dont know anyone in the world more passionate about this than my very own mom. She is an umberphile. She is verified. Shes crisscrossed the globe chasing these majestic moments in the sky. Wrapped in a state of cosmic euphoria, more than 30 family members all together in oregon soaking in the Great American eclipse of 2017. All because of my mom. See the stars. Will you tell me if you see some stars . Whit dr. Sharon johnson edel, a retired geography professor turned eclipse chaser. You made us plan this years in advance. Thats right. Well, i knew that it would be a unique experience in your lives. Just making it possible and dragging you all to it, i just felt was really worth it. Whit a sea of tents and rvs as far as the eye can see. We came from all over camping in rvs, grand kids in tow. My mothers dream finally realized. You convinced us to do it. You pulled it off. What i was looking at during the eclipse was all of you. There was screaming. Very special time. Thats what made this particular eclipse particularly special to me. Whit absolutely changed me. I mean, theres this moment where you feel completely insignificant. You realize there are greater forces at play in the universe. Totality is complete. We are out of totality whoo moms eclipse adventures taking her around the world. From oregon to hawaii, off the coast of bulgaria, libya, down to Easter Island and back to oregon. Today mexico will be number seven. My mom on a mission to share with others this gift of totality. If you met someone who has never seen an eclipse before, make the pitch. This is a once in a life time experience. If you are with people, it will unite you and all of you will share it. Okay, son, im ready lets go watch the eclipse. Robin wow. Whit were ready here, too. George we are about to surprise people who think they are here to talk about stem and the importance in education but really it is all about them. Michael, take it away. Michael all right, george. Stem kids nyc has inspired others down to a science. Guys, come on out come on out hey how are you . Welcome to Good Morning America. Come on in, everybody. Got a full crew here. Were celebrating you were celebrating you [ applause ] you are our ray of sunshines this morning. Were going to show america your story. Check it out. Knowledge is power. Computer engineers. Michael but access and exposure is key. Yvonne thevenot has made it her mission to unlock the stem sciences for the youth of new york. Coding, using a microscope, putting a White Lab Coat on, doing experiments, building robots and so on. That lens needed to be part of what they did. Michael that lens became the nonprofit stem kids nyc. When we would break things apart, something that was old and didnt really have value, we were able to turn that into something amazing. Michael students sharing the enlightening experiences with their parents and community. He comes home and is telling me he made an oven and they solar powered the oven with the sun and made smores. That just, like, blew my mind. I said this is exactly what i want to give him, that exposure. Michael empowered by an allstar staff of teachers. Yvonne has been able to integrate a curriculum representative of every student. I would describe her work as saving the day for me. I needed a program that was tested and that was gonna engage kids, and she came in and did that. Michael her vision of furthering the reach of stem is why yvonne is our ray of sunshine. The good that my mom does is like a giant pair of shoes that just keeps getting bigger and bigger to fill. I see her always constantly putting other things before herself and just helping other people. Its really just inspiring. Today is the day of the eclipse. It just reminds me the only way she would have been stopped is the moon was to block a bright star. Once that moon moves out the way, that bright star shines even brighter. Thats what she is. Michael yvonne, watching you watch that piece was great. I mean, that was a surprise for you. Yes. Yes. Michael also, in addition to running stem kids nyc, youre a mother. You got your ph. D. Yeah. Michael also, we have a surprise for you this morning. Someones here to support you. Come on out. This is your son. [ applause ] he said, mom, im not coming. Take my car. Michael it was a surprise. So what is your passion and where does it come from . It comes from my son here. When he was 8 i realized there werent a lot of stem programs. I started my dad gave me my first microscope when i was 6. When he was 8, he was in a great school, but no stem. No science. I thought, okay, i actually looked at the numbers of mass incarceration and saw there are people that look like him in prison and i just could not do that. So i went into education so there would be more people like my son doing stem. Michael wow. George such good work. One of your teachers is here. Tell us what makes stem so special. Thank you. When i was a kid, i never had this kind of opportunity. I believe stem kids nyc i get this chance to give the kids the experience that i never had. Being a mother of a 2yearold daughter, i feel i had this. I had this opportunity. My daughter will definitely have this opportunity. George thats awesome. Lara you call stem kids nyc the little engine that can. What keeps that Engine Running . My teachers. They are in the classroom from prek all the way up working with our future scientists, or just future people who can solve problems, who can have critical thinking, who can get the identity that they can. Lara yep. Michael were all impressed by you. Thank you. Michael were not the only ones who are impressed by you and your organization. And the way youre changing lives. You know . You really are. Our friends at scholastic, they heard about you, and theyre giving you 10,000 and their scholastic catalog. [ applause ] thank you. Oh my gosh. Lara yes. Michael thats not all. Thats not all. Papermate and elmers, theyre each giving you 1,000 worth of their products. Yep. [ applause ] that as well. You are our ray of sunshine so, ray, can you show us what else theyre doing . Lara here he comes. Michael youre also getting 15,000 [ applause ] thank you. Whoa. Michael how much will all of this help . This is going to help us get more robots. I see the robot here. More microscopes. And expand to at least one school that we can do for free. Thats what this does. Thank you. Michael continuing to help you make a big impact. Yvonne, thank you. Thank you. Lara so happy to have you here to tell your story. I appreciate it. Michael thank you for spending time here. Thanks for surprising your mom. [ applause ] lara thank you, guys. That was fun. Michael all right. Were gonna take some of this ray of sunshine and throw it over to you, ginger. Ginger catching it right now, michael. Students here from Carbondale Community high school. Theyre out of school, but were gonna take them to school. You can learn a lot during an eclipse. Scientists will be getting data sets that will be used for hundreds of years during that small window today. Even computer modelling for forecasting can be helped with data from an eclipse. You know we can see temperature drop easily 10, 15 degrees later this afternoon. Well be in the upper 70s. Lot of times that happens when you block the sun out. The wind changes both speed and direction. Thats the big picture. Lara coming up on gma chef judy is here with some great treats to make and enjoy. They are eclipse themed and delicious.
