Lots to get to this morning, including this, the latest doings of the duke and duchess of cambridge, enchanting crowds in new zealand. With kate holding her own Little Tea Party earlier today. And conjuring images of and comparisons to princess diana. And turns out, william weighed in on kates wardrobe, as well. An interesting note. On a much more serious note this morning, the sentence is in for the woman who killed her boyfriend with her 5 1 2inch stiletto highheel. Her reaction in court straight ahead. We do begin with a search for answers. What caused that california highway horror that left ten people dead . The ntsb examining the scene, where a tractortrailer crossed the Center Divider and slammed into a bus full of high school students. Both bursting into flames. Bazi kanani has the latest from chico, california. Bazi, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, bianna. Several of the teenage victims of the crash are still recovering at local hospitals this morning. And were now hearing from more of the survivors about their terrifying experience. Aeroseveral crash investigators want to hear from them, too. Emotional reunions. Survivors families relieved this morning to be with their teenagers again. After narrowly escaping a fiery death in a tour bus. Just saw a very, very large explosion. And fireball. Reporter the flames devouring a fedex tractortrailer that plowed across a median thursday, slamming into the bus, that was taking more than 40 High School Seniors and their chaperons to visit Humboldt State university in Northern California. This student say the day began with laughter on the bus. Playing music. Playing games. It was just a great time on the bus. Reporter the fun, interrupted violently, four hours from their destination. All of a sudden, people started screaming. As i look up, the bus driver slams on the brakes. And its a loud screeching noise. Ill never forget it. The fedex truck was on fire. My first instinct was, i have to get out of here. Reporter students scrambling to escape the bus. Jumping through windows. A nearby resident who ran to the scene was horrified to see some of them on fire. Is it hard for you to look at that . Yeah because i see people in there. Reporter ten people were killed in the crash, including both drivers. Ntsb investigators are trying to understand why the truck driver lost control. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who witnessed something that would be helpful. Reporter investigators, now hoping to salvage important clues from the wreckage. But the extensive damage is making that difficult. Ntsb investigators said they would not speculate about the cause of the crash. Whether it was likely human error or mechanical. But another driver involved in the collision said she saw the truck already on fire as it came across the median. Investigators will take her account into consideration. They say it could be months before they determine the cause. Dan . So many questions. So many families looking for answers this morning. Bazi, thank you. Now, to the new videotape of a real wild west showdown. Federal agents clashing with protesters, some from armed militia groups, who are arriving, now, from all over the country, to support a rancher in nevada, whose 20year tax fight with the government is now coming to a real boil. Abcs john muller is on the story. Good morning. This videotape is really intense. Reporter pretty intense stuff. Youre right. You can call it high noontime near bunkerville, nevada. Protesters see it as a freedom fight. The feds say its about unpaid grazing fees and trespassing. One thing is clear, though, the situation, very tense. Armed with tasers and dogs, federal agents from the bureau of Land Management clash with protesters. Back up. Reporter its a turf war thats been brewing for years. Finally boiling over and caught on this cell phone video wednesday. The bureau of Land Management confirmed that two protesters were detained wednesday and another one arrested just days before. All have been released. I just saw federal agents throw my aunt on the ground. Reporter on the surface, its all about cows. The bureau of Land Management is removing cattle owned by Rancher Cliven Bundy because they say he, quote, owes the American People in excess of 1 million and refuses to abide by the law of the land, despite many opportunities over the last 20 years to do so. Bundy claims states rights. Saying his cattle have grazed here for decades. I have no contract with the United States government. I pay grazing fees. Thats what blm is supposed to be. Its land managers. And they were managing my ranch out of business. So, i refuse to pay. Reporter the bad blood has sparked a roadside protest movement thats growing by day and night. With people well beyond nevada driving for hours to join in. Bonding by campfires. They say theyre fighting for something way bigger than cows. Its about the freedom of america. We the people, we have to stand up. We have to stand up and fight. Reporter now, the bureau of Land Management maintains this is a matter of fairness. They say thousands of lawabiding ranchers do pay their grazing fees every year. As for local protest leaders, they have urged protesters not to wear camouflage and to keep any weapons they bring inside their vehicles. Guys . Thanks, john. Appreciate it. Were going to stay on this story. This morning, u. S. Navy ship is joining the hunt for flight 370 over the indian motion. The australian Prime Minister saying the search zone is condensed, the underwater signals, he believes are from the planes black boxes, are fading and fading fast. Abcs Clayton Sandell has more, now, from perth, australia. Clayton, good morning. Reporter good morning to you, dan. This morning, officials tell us they are no longer hearing any credible signals from what they believe are emergency black box beacons. If that doesnt change, they say they will soon the have to give up part of the search. Overnight, 14 ships and 10 airplanes spent another day in a frustrating search for clues. They are desperate to hear more of those underwater pings from beacons that would lead them to the airplanes cockpit voice and data recorders. But those fading signals have not been heard since tuesday. Are you optimistic we will find these black boxes . We will do our best. Reporter now, the u. S. Navy captain in charge of this underwater probe says, without new leads, they are forced to use plan b. When the time is right, well say, yes, the beacons have probably stopped transmitting. And its time to switch to the short range. Reporter and that may be a few days away. Yes. Reporter the next step in the search is using powerful sonar on this underwater drone to create images of the sea floor, as much as 15,000 feet down. Hoping the wreckage will appear among a pitchblack alien landscape of plains, canyons and mountains. Weve gotten some encouraging detections. But were not going to be convinced we have found the aircraft until we can look at a picture and say, that is Malaysian Air 370. Reporter when or if the planes black boxes are located, a remotelyoperated vehicle like this will bring them up. The r. V. Will go down. And it will comb through the debris field, looking for the black boxes and any other items that investigators need to help identify the cause of the crash. Reporter this morning, more resources are heading this way. The u. S. Navy is sending a resupply ship with more gas and more food. Its a sign of just how long they plan on being here. We begin in kansas city, missouri, where someone has been randomly shooting at cars and drivers for several weeks. As Michelle Franzen reports this morning, the search for the gunman is now intensifying. Reporter this morning, police have stepped up the hunt for a possible serial shooter in kansas city, missouri. Linked, Authorities Say, to at least 13 random shootings, targeting drivers on highways. Federal investigators have joined the search. But so far, no suspects. Till somebodys apprehended and will have resources out there. Reporter the shootings dot areas of interstates 435 and 470, near exits and interchanges. Key clues, experts say, that could help close in on the shooter. Each time it occurs, they get a little more information. A car description. A better description of the individual. Hell make a mistake, maybe. And somebody will get a tag number. Reporter Police Say Three people have been injured by gunfire so far, with injuries to arms and legs. And take a look at the cars. Bullet holes show the damage. And close calls for drivers like thomas farland. Something hit the car. Didnt know what it was. Pulled over my first opportunity. Thats when i saw the bullet hole. Reporter drivers onedge, knowing the shooter could strike again. Its really scary to think that somebody is out here doing it with no regard for what can happen. Reporter in addition to patrols, police are offering a 10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. For good morning america, Michelle Franzen, abc news, new york. And a student at the pittsburgh Area High School where a fellow student allegedly went on a stabbing spree this week, says the night before the attack, he was ridiculed in a facebook posting. Investigators are looking into the possibility the suspect, 16yearold alex hribal, was bullied. But say, so far theres no evidence of that. And now, the fellow student is coming forward, saying she saw a screen shot of the facebook posting, since removed, in which alex was called, quote unquote, rat face and other derisive names. This comes as three other teenagers who were more seriously injured remain in the hospital in intensive care. And the tax filing deadline is just days away, in case you forgot. And this morning, were getting a look at the tax returns of president obama and the first lady. It seems the president s annual income has been plummeting since he took office five years ago. In 2013, the president and first lady filed jointly, earned over 481,000. A huge drop from 2009 when the president raked in over 500,000. Most came from the president s royalties in books. The decline in book sales, to claim for the drop in income. Reminder, tax day is this coming tuesday. I went for an extension. The phoenix woman accused of throwing a shoe at Hillary Clinton in las vegas has been released. Allison michelle earnst was given a misdemeanor of disorderly conduct. She faces a year in the county lockup. If convicted. She was arrested for allegedly hurling a shoe at clinton who was attending a conference at a hotel casino there in vegas. And finally, looking at an extremely rare sight. Those are twin horses, just six days old, already racing around. And beating the odds in hera, oklahoma. 1 in 10,000 horse pregnancies result in twins. Once theyre born, doctors say only about 20 of those twin horses survive. These colts were named, honor this and honor that. Pretty good names. So cute. I just feel for the mother. Yeah. The horses are larger. They can handle a large colt like that. Thanks, ron. Hey, marci. Reporter when the man walked into the madison avenue shop around 1 30 yesterday afternoon, the manager says she just assumed he was a wealthy or celebrity client. Never imagining he would attack her and eventually walk out with about 60,000 worth of jewelry. This morning, police are on the search for a brazen thief who ripped off a ritzy new york Jewelry Store to the stars. Margo manhattans customers include selena gomez, queen latifah, and beyonce, who wore one of the stores signature pieces in her music video, glow. But an ordinary day turned out to be anything but, when a customer stopped in on friday afternoon. We let him in. And he posed as a shopper. He was here for quite a while. Reporter that man, seen here on store surveillance cameras, spent 20 minutes shopping. Even getting help from the store manager. But this shopping trip turned violent. Look as the man places the manager in a chokehold in a back room. Allegedly telling her he had a taser. Tying her up and leaving her on the floor as he cleaned out the safe. And it didnt end there. The man going on a shopping spree. Nabbing some of the stores mostprized pieces, including this 45,000 18 karat white gold and amethyst necklace. And these 500 interlocking rings. He took the whole collection. Margo manhattans owner will be reevaluating security. Stepping up from the security puppy currently in the store. Thats why i tell my gm and assistants, if they want the stuff, give them the stuff. Your lifes more important than anything else. Reporter and were told the manager who was attacked is okay. But the owner says she takes that point she just made really seriously, especially after someone was killed in another Jewelry Store robbery a few years ago just ten blocks away. Today, a woman told kate she liked her in the green jacket she was wearing. Kate said, while she likes that jacket, too, her husband thought that jacket was too bright. Like any great night out in the big apple, it had to include two things that new york city does best. Fabulous food and the great white way. Big city lights. Fivestar dining. A night on broadway.
