First, lets get the latest on the stunning setback on the search for the missing malaysia jet. David kerley has been tracking this mystery from the start. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, george. This is a major setback and a big embarrassment. The first big embarrassment for the australians in the search for this missing 777. Theyve wrapped up the underwater search. And say they do not believe that the vehicle, the 777, is actually in that area. This means the black box pings the australians thought they heard, apparently are not real. On wednesday, or this morning, the australian transport safety board said, quote, in its professional judgment, the area can now be discounted as the final resting place for mh370. The place theyve been searching for weeks. It is an embarrassment for the Royal Australian navy because its acoustical Lab Confirmed those springs as from the black boxes. And sonar scanners will not be back in the water probably until august, probably, to look for the wreckage. Why the delay . Reporter they dont have the equipment in place yet. Right now, a chinese ship is doing a general topographical map of the ocean bottom. Then, they want to bring in a contractor to look for wreckage. But they have to make a deal with the private contractor to do that. So far this morning, they havent made a deal. And once they do start to do the work, george, it could take a year to look over this area for that wreckage. Another year. And still a mystery. Okay, davis, thanks very much. Wow, increditly frustrating especially for the families. Now, to the deadly rampage in Santa Barbara and new insight into the killer. The parents of elliot rodger, giving their side of the story through a family friend. And, amy, you spoke to this person. So many people are asking what could have led this young man to take the lives of 6 innocent people and injure 13 others. So, yesterday, i spoke with close family friend and author, Simon Astaire who knew Elliott Rodger since he was a little boy and witnessed his parents struggle to raise him first hand. When i saw them yesterday, they have diminished in size. Theyre crippled with pain. You said they are mourning the innocent lives that were taken, more than their own sons life. Its true. Every part of it. Talking about that. Not about their son. Reporter horror, not just gripping the u. C. Santa barbara campus friday night, but also overcoming Elliott Rodgers mother. She was mile as way when she first laid eyes on the the m manifesto. She read the first four lines. And it she knew something was wrong. She automatically went to youtube. She watched 30 seconds of the video. And immediately rang elliots father. And she said, you have to look at this youtube video, retribution. It all has to come to this. And he said, we have to get there. We have to get to Santa Barbara. As theyre driving up there, they know intrinsically, somethings wrong with elliot. And then they start to hear us on the radio, the news slashers, that a black bmw was involved, and the mass shooting. Reporter rodgers parents, unable to face the cameras yet, offering a written statement, instead. We are crying in pain for the victims and their families. It breaks our heart on a level that we didnt think possible. The feeling of knowing that it was our sons actions that caused the tragedy can only be described as hell on earth. Was elliot close with his parents . You know, he was a very removed, remote child. Now, i remember on one particular occasion, i went to a party of theirs. I walked out. And he was there on the street, all alone. I thought he was the loneliest person ive ever seen in my life. He was an odd child. He hesitated. He shook when you met him. Do you know if elliot was on any medication . I understand he was on xanax in the last six months. And i think doctors have offered to put him on medication before. Like a year ago. And i dont know the legal side, you see. But i know he refused to take it. On a daytoday basis, would you say elliots parents were concerned about him . Yes. Every day. Every day. I think their fears fundamentally, deep down, was that he was going to take his own life. Elliots mother had reached out before. Policed showed up to his apartment. And now, theres an investigation whether or not the correct actions were taken. Theres no blame to the police, whatsoever, because elliot fooled everyone for a very, very long time. He fooled me. He fooled his family. He fooled everyone who saw him. He was a tragic figure. And now, when i talk about him, i talk about him knowing what he did. He is, in many ways, a monster. And simon told us that elliots father said he spoke to his son on thursday. That was the day before the shooting. And elliot had told his father he would be joining his family for lunch on saturday, the day after the shooting. And oddly, the father said that his son seemed happier than usual. Really . And he had no indication that anything was wrong. An incredibly tragic story. Such a chilling portrait. It is because no one knew. He really kept it hidden. He did not display any anger ever in his life. So it was so shocking to him. Were going to move to the growing scandal at the v. A. A damning, new report confirms that nearly 2,000 veterans were, quote, lost, in the health care system, never put on a waiting list for care. And the outrage grew on capitol hill. Abcs jon karl is in washington. Jon, the calls for v. A. Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign have been climbing by the hour. Reporter thats right, george. The drum beat is getting louder. Theres 58 members of congress, many of them democrats, who have called on shinseki to go. Alltold, 1,700 vets were found to be on secret waiting lists at the phoenix v. A. And at risk of being lost or forgotten. According to the v. A. s internal watchdog, the veterans were forced to wait an average of 115 days to get a first appointment. While the hospital kept secret lists to conceal how long it took to get care. And it gets worse. Investigators say the problem is systemic throughout the v. A. Now, some 42 v. A. Health centers around the country are under investigation. Do you solemnly swear reporter at a hearing last night, members of congress unloaded on senior v. A. Officials, demanding answers. The only thing thats clear right now is that theres 40 brave soldiers that served their country proudly that died while waiting on a list. Whats unclear is how much further this goes. Reporter the calls for secretary shinseki to resign are louder than ever. These allegations are not just administrative problems. These are criminal problems. Reporter democrats are calling for shinsekis head, as well. President obama promised accountability after meeting with shinseki last week. I have said to rick, i want to see what the results of these reports are. And there is going to be accountability. Reporter shinseki has a deadline of tomorrow to give the president his own report on the v. A. s problems and his plan to fix them. They were given orderers to turn to avoid a cargo plane that was just taking off. But the cargo plane veered in the same direction over fire island, coming within four seconds of colliding. For the first time, an american citizen has helped al qaeda carry out a Suicide Attack in syrias civil war. An Extremist Group released this photo, claiming to show an american bomber wearing a suicide vest.
