KGO Good Morning America July 6, 2014

And the beatle gets back. Eight days a week Paul Mccartney back on tour, his first concert in almost two months since being sent to the hospital with a virus. Feeling great. Rocking and rolling. Telling the world, i feel fine. Let it be 72 never looked so good. Great to see Paul Mccartney out healthy. Still going strong. Good morning, america. Dan is enjoying the Holiday Weekend off. Great to have ryan smith back with us. Good to be here right next to you as always. Yes. We start the show with, of course, the dramatic images, the moments after that frightening shark attack. Heres the bloody surfboard where they put the victim after he was pulled out of the water. And then here he is lucky to be alive being put in an ambulance. You can see the huge gash where the great white took a bite out of him. This morning he has a lot to say about his shocking ordeal. So lets get right to that agitated great white biting a man swimming at one of californias bestknown beaches. Abcs nick watt is at the scene, Manhattan Beach outside l. A. Nick . Reporter good morning, ryan. A marine biologist i spoke to says Manhattan Beach is now the Global Capital for juvenile great white sharks. Exactly why theyre here, no one is really sure, but they are here in numbers, and they say that this was an accident just waiting to happen. Hey, get out of the water. Shark hey, get out of the water. Get out of the water. Shark. Reporter words no one wants to hear on a basis beach day, july 4th weekend. A great white shark caught on a fishermans line fighting for its life when an unwitting swimmer got in the way. Shark attack. Thats not good. It came out of nowhere, and it looked at me, and it lunged at my chest. Reporter we spoke to the victim, californian realtor steve robles, overnight. Locked into my chest, and i took my right hand and grabbed the nose of the shark to try and pry its mouth open to get it off of me. That all happened within two seconds. Reporter he was bleeding but conscious. I started yelling, somebody get him. Help him, whatever they could. It looks like hes calling for help. Keep swimming. Keep swimming. Its right here. Reporter brave surfers nearby saved the stricken swimmer. There was a lot of blood in the water and all over the board. It was a pretty intense shark bite. I was pretty much in shock and screaming the whole time. I was scared. More than anything, i was just terrified. Reporter multiple puncture wounds to his ribs, back and arms. This was such a freak accident. I couldnt believe it happened. We do see the sharks. Theyre here, and theyve been around. Theres never been a bite. July 4th weekend, how ironic is that. Reporter the great white population is back on the rise. Researchers say up 42 since 1997 thanks to conservation efforts, and with many more sharks and so many people in the water this summer, attacks are inevitable. Now, attacks by juvenile great white sharks are extremely rare. Some say this is only the second documented case ever, but today the beaches here at Manhattan Beach are open here. But today, there will be more people back in the water enjoying this july 4th weekend. Nick, thank you, and one person who says she will be back in the water is mimi miller, an avid surfer who witnessed the horrifying attack. I spoke with her just moments ago. So, mimi, thank you so much for joining us. Can you describe the scene . When did you see mr. Robles, and did you actually see him attacked, or were you alerted to the situation when you heard the screaming . I was alerted to the situation when i heard the screaming on the beach. I was actually on my way down to surf, and thats when i saw the commotion and all the surfers helping him up to shore and the lifeguards getting him to the shore and started working on him. Have you ever witnessed a shark attack . I know that youre out there in the water three or four times a week. I have not ever witnessed a shark attack. We swim with sharks all the time. We know theyre there. We try not to think about them but they actually pop their head out of water, and we see them, you know, swim past us in a like weird squiggly line, and we just get out of the water or sometimes well see them underneath us and well just swim down and we just pretend theyre not there. We just let each other know, that, hey, theres a shark in the water and well say, how big is it, okay, its six foot. Okay, its a juvenile. Okay, so well just, you know, well either get out and go down a couple of feet or whatever yards or just like stay on our surfboards and they dont usually bother us. They just pass us by. Lets talk about the fishermen. For sure. I know thats something that youre concerned with and other surfers in your community are concerned with, agitating the sharks. Can you talk about that . Well, us surfers and bodyboarders and swimmers, we despise the fishermen on our pier. We thats one thing that we always talk about. It is a nuisance for them to be there. They put us in danger every single day that theyre there fishing there, and its something that we always think about that is this the day that, you know, well be, you know, well have to deal with sharks because theyre on the pier. They should not be allowed to be there with us. Their hooks, you know, some of them dont know what theyre doing, and they come out there with their hooks, and some of my friends have been hooked in their lines before. The lines have come close to, you know, to the bodyboarders boards and to the surfboards and its just dangerous, its very dangerous. Why are they there and why should they be allowed that they have this right to be there and theyre putting our lives in danger . They really are. And we know we do not like it. I personally do not like it. That was the situation in mr. Robles case, as well, with the fisherman hooking the shark. Well see if any of the laws are changed now because of this, but, mimi, thank you so much for your time this morning and your experience. Thank you for sharing it. Thank you. Thank you. And you heard me chuckle when she said that theyre so used to seeing these sixfoot sharks, juvenile, and they just alert each other and swim by. Incredible. They still are killers but luckily for mr. Robles sake, it looks like he will be okay. A six to sevenfoot shark is still a shark. Wow. How about that. Overseas now to brandnew developments in israel where an american teenager whose palestinian cousin was murdered was brutally beaten and imprisoned by israeli troops. They say the boy attacked officers and resisted arrest while protesting his relatives death and Alex Marquardt has the latest from jerusalem. Reporter good morning, bianna and ryan. Just a short time ago, Tariq Abu Khdeir was released, but its a conditional release. According to a u. S. Official, he will be placed under house arrest. He wont be able to return here to this neighborhood where his family has been staying and where the incident took place and he will also have to post a bail of around 850. 15yearold american Tariq Abu Khdeir appearing in front of a judge in an Israeli Court today released after being held without charges since thursday. It is the unrelenting brutality of this video that is sending shock waves around the world as one Israeli Policeman pins a young teen down, another repeatedly stomps on the boys head then kneels down to keep punching. His family immediately said the victim was tariq, a rising sophomore born and raised in tampa, florida. This is what he looked like afterwards. Tariq was on Summer Vacation with his parents visiting their family in jerusalem. When we sat down with them, they were stunned and outraged. Palestinians live like this every day. Theyll kind of say, okay, were deal with it, but us as americans, its not human. Reporter it was tariqs cousin, 16yearold mohammed abu khdeir, who was killed on wednesday after he was abducted and set on fire. Today local media reports say suspects have been arrested, extremists looking for revenge for the recent murders of three jewish teens. An Israeli Police spokesman told abc news this morning that tariq was part of a group of masked teens in the violent clashes that followed and says he resisted arrest and attacked the police who call this video edited and biased. Tariqs parents say he was playing with cousins at the wrong place at the wrong time. What would you say to the Police Officers who beat your son if you could speak to them . Why . Why . Why couldnt you just walk him there . Why did you have to brutally so far there has been no punishment for the policemen in the video. Israels Justice Department says theyve launched an investigation. As for the conditions of tariqs release, they will apply after the family leaves on the 16th. Bianna. Sure to be more investigation to come, alex, thank you. Now lets bring in Martha Raddatz in washington where shes hosting this week. Good morning to you, martha. Tensions between the two are escalating by the day with two teenage american citizens now caught in the fray. One found dead last week. The other this florida teen allegedly beaten by police. What, if anything, can the u. S. Do now to ease the situation and aid in the investigations . Well, the United States will definitely be part of this investigation. In fact, the state Department Said we are profoundly troubled by reports that he was severely beaten while in Police Custody and strongly condemn the any excessive use of force. We are calling for a speedy transparent and credible investigation, but because there are americans involved, the fbi, the Justice Department will likely be involved, as well. The United States is trying to calm things down, is trying to calm both sides in this conflict. They do not want it to escalate further. The state department has a lot on their plate and i want to stay in the region. Isis leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi made a rare video appearance released yesterday. Many view it as a brazen display of their increasing strength in the region. I know you were just recently in iraq. Martha, what statement is he trying to make here, and are u. S. Interests at greater risk now . Bianna, this is really a remarkable tape. If that man stood a man who has a 10 million reward on his head standing in mosul, iraqs second biggest city, a city that the United States once occupied. He is sending a very strong message that he is in charge. He urged people to join the jihad. He was very calm. Obviously they have a media branch because that tape was put out almost immediately. The Iraqi Government is denying that this tape is real, but the Iraqi Government has been saying a lot of things particularly when i was there denying a lot of things that, in fact, are probably true. The Iraqi Government seems to become more and more weakened by the day. Martha, thank you. And be sure to join martha later on abcs this week when she will be tackling one of those pressing issues in the u. S. , going oneonone with texas republican governor rick perry who wants Illegal Immigrants who flooded the border since october sent back home. But now lets get a check of the mornings other top stories and for that were going to turn to ron. Ryan, sara, good morning, everyone. We begin out west where people in Southern California were jolted by a rumbling earthquake. The 4. 4 quake rattled San Bernardino county, thts east of los angeles. This happened saturday morning. The epicenter was eight miles from Big Bear Lake where tourists were shaken up. Its pretty scary. Felt like a rumble and like the trees were like moving and it was really scary. Felt like a little shake but then a lot of shake afterwards. Like if someone was taking the building and like trying to move it, it wasnt rolling. It was like a jerking almost. And Officials Say no one was injured, but a highway in the area had to be closed because of a rock slide. Just a few hundred miles north, a huge wildfire is raging in monticello, california. Officials launched an allout air assault to fight the blaze that is burning in a remote and rugged area there. The fire has more than tripled in size scorching 7,000 acres. Dozens of residents and vacationing campers had to be evacuated. The fire is only about 30 contained. And ukraine is claiming a major victory against prorussian rebels in the countrys embattled eastern region. Ukrainian forces say they have reestablished control of slovyansk, a city at the center of their battle in the fight against the straightist insurgency. In poland, 11 were killed when a small plane crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff in the southern part of that country. A denver resident is getting a light show thanks to a team of skydivers who jumped out over mile high stadium. Taken by one of them, it shows the pyrotechnics attached to their feet lighting up the night sky. Very cool there. Part of the fourth of july light show for denvers professional lacrosse team, the outlaws. The stunt generated, by the way, dozens of reports of ufos. Right. Doesnt surprise me. Maybe there were some ufos mixed in with the stunt men. Finally we know the truth. Yes. All out in denver. All right. Thank you, ron. And Paul Mccartney, he may have been sidelined by a virus but that was so yesterday. Badumdum. I got that. Do you like that . Yeah. The form he beatle bounced back. Hes back in action rocking out a sold out show in albany and abcs sara haines is here with more. Great to see him on his feet. Great to see him back on the stage doing what he does best. And if age was supposed to slow him down, someone should probably let him know. I aint got nothing but love babe eight days a week reporter 72 never sounded so good as Paul Mccartney returned to the stage last night performing in albany, new york. Let it be let it be let it be let it be reporter it was just seven weeks ago when mccartney had a hard days night canceling a show in tokyo after being hospitalized for a viral infection. Reporter after his illness mccartney released this Youtube Video promising his fans a return. Feeling great. Rocking and rolling. Yeah. Reporter fans were eager to show they still love him. Will you still feed me will you still need me when im 64 reporter despite turning 72 just two weeks ago and performing for more than 50 years, it seems this rocker would rather work eight days a week than consider retirement, and thats exactly the song mccartney opened with in albany donning black jeans and a sky blue blazer. And he took off that sky blue blazer one time and joked with the audience that it was his one wardrobe change. His tour continues on monday in pittsburgh then on to chicago for a wednesday show and hes not slowing down at all. Yeah. Not at all. As you said, hes going to work eight days a week. If it were possible i think wed all be working eight days a week. Yes. Sara is not slowing down. The world is not ready for that. Not ready. Please, please. Maybe. Save it for pop. Going to want to pay attention. Paul is a wellknown vegan but for the millions of us meat eaters the fourth of july is synonymous with barbecue, well, at least for texans like myself. And philadelphians like me. And for philadelphians like you. Well, today its not just a southern thing anymore, seasoning, marinating and slowly smoking meat to perfection has become a huge craze from coast to coast. Reporter were on the road to heaven. Its texas barbecue, and here beef is religion. In texas alone there are over 1900 joints. A typical day at Franklin Barbecue in austin looks Something Like this. So youre looking at a fourhour wait. Reporter even then you still arent guaranteed a chance to taste the world famous cuisine. Its all part of the foodie experience. Melt in your mouth. Reporter barbecue is big nationwide. Tennessee, louisiana, and north carolina, and now, new york. Yes, thats right. East coast barbecue is a top contender against the southern king of meat. Barbecue super fans head to delaney barbecue for the texasinspired brisket run by daniel delaney. We do our best to not innovate at all. Reporter why take on whats already considered number one and thats texas barbecue. Someone has to unthrone the legends. Right . Thats how it works. Reporter but as a native texan, i had to see for myself. Its going to be tough to please me, you see, im a texas girl that grew up on texasstyle barbecue. Dans promised me some good stuff. Good thing for him im hungry. Pork rib, sausage, brisket, pulled pork and turkey. It melts in your mouth. Besides the zip code there is not much different from what the greats are doing in texas and what we try and do every day here. Reporter despite their newfound barbecue fame, these new york pit masters say success is surprisingly simple. No secret. They think its a
