The people of cuba, all night long, all morning long, coming to this square, revolution square, commemorating the communist revolution. People here, looking to this argentine pope, this fellow latin american, preaching a very different kind of revolution to them today. Its the francis effect on the streefts havana. Thousand of people turning out, many waving the papal flag for the man they call papa francisco. Hes the first pope from the new world and a stop here in cuba just before he comes to the United States is meant to strengthen that diplomatic breakthrough he helped broker between the two countries last year. I think this trip is really about healing historic wounds. And bringing together people who have been split apart. And we turn now to arizona where police have a suspect in custody in connection with the phoenix freeway shootings. But theyre still searching for a motive. Leslie Aaron Merritt jr. Was arrested in those shootings. Appearing in court, telling the judge, they got, quote, the wrong guy. We get more from abcs kanya whitworth. Reporter investigators are describing the relief as limited. Saying this investigation is still very much ongoing, even though they have their prime suspect in at least four of shes shustings in jail right there behind me. He maintains he is not the one responsible for these freeway shootings. This morning, merritt jr. Possibly facing more than 20 felony charges including acts of terrorism, for the shoots on the phoenix freeway that had residents fearing for their lives for weeks. The person almost took me away from my family. Reporter investigators say that a gun pawned by merritt junior was the same gun used in four of the freeway shootings. Including this one. That injured a 13yearold girl. Im the wrong guy. I tried telling the detectives that. I havent even had access to a weapon. Reporter a local ballistic experts tell abc news by studying physical evidence found after shootings the investigators can rule out several firearms and start from there. Investigators say determine after testfiring several guns, from pawn shops, bullet fragments matched a handgun sold to them by merrit jr. As long as it wasnt fired thousand of times after, it should be easy to match. Reporter but merritt has maintained that the gun has been at the pawnshop for at least two months. If he committed a crime with the firearm, my son has more sense than to pawn said firearm, because it links directly back to you. Police say the shootings also spurring a string of copy cats which authorities are still on the hunt for. While they say progress has been made, this isnt over. Were continuing to a analyze evidence and investigating this case. This case is still ongoing. Now because of the substantial fear in this community right now and with the state considers the intense nature of these crimes, merritts bond has been set at a Million Dollars cash. The familys lawyers saying the home wasnt properly ventilated. Before the family was allowed back in. While other members of the family may have recovered quickly, they say young payton may have suffered permanent brain damage. This morning, paytons family filing a lawsuit against terminix, alleging negligence after allowing the family back in their home following a treatment for termites. He sustained exposure to pesticides used in the fume gags process and because of that, unfortunately, has sustained a very terrible traumatic brain injury. Reporter after the exposure to pesticides. 10yearold payton lost motor control and ability to speak. Hes now in rehab but a family spokesman said he will never be the same. Life as he knows it has been stolen from him. Reporter the family said they hired a subcontractor to fumigate their home, but within hours of returning to their home, they fell ill. The familys lawyer said this never should have happened. And could have been avoided. You rely upon people to properly fumigate your home, to tent your home and when the job is done, they have a duty to make certain the home is fumigated, the chemicals are dissipated and properly ventilated out and warn you of any potential dangers. Reporter in a previous statement to abc news, terminix said we are saddened to learn of this and our hearts with the family. Weir carefully reviewing the matter. Back in florida, payton continues his physical, occupation and speech therapies. The family has set up a go fund me page. To help with expenses related to paytons care. They say while they are seeing some improvement with the speech, he still cant sit or stand on his own and no one, not even his doctors, know if hell make a full recovery. The hope here is because hes young, the brain will reroute some of those pathways and he will be able to recover some motor function. We certainly hope so.
