And his vision for the white house. From abc news, its this week. Here now, chief anchor george stephanopoulos. Good morning, and to all our moms out there, happy mothers day. Well, a year ago, it seemed impossible. Even a month ago, the odds were long. But this week, donald trump sealed the deal. The last man standing for the gop nomination well before the convention. In many ways, its still hard to believe and for many republicans, including two former president s and the speaker of the house, hard to accept. Especially after headlines like these. Donald trumps feud with the establishment threatens to break the Republican Party in half. As youll hear in a moment, hes willing to fix it but only on his terms. Donald trumps bet, that he can make the grand old party a Brandnew Party and prove his doubters wrong again by winning the white house. So we have had a pretty busy couple of weeks. Right . Now the nominee, donald trump is also the underdog. Trailing Hillary Clinton. Atop a divided party. Knock the crap of of them, would you . Seriously . Questions about experience, temperament, and judgment. We cant have a loose cannon in the oval office. From day one and with every provocation theyre bringing drugs. Theyre bringing crime, theyre rapists. Trumps been counted out. Trumps running for president. Does gravity still work . Since were counting, here are other numbers. Trump will win more votes than any other republican candidate in history. Hes hit 10. 6 million. With big states still ahead, hell beat george bushs primary record of 10. 8 million. Trump has defeated 16 candidates another record number. With a combined 200 years in elected office. I actually wish the primaries were not over. Its no fun this way. So can trump defi expectations again . Hes beaten the odds. Hes surprised everybody. I think we all make a mistake if we dont take him seriously. The Vice President warning fellow democrats that trump may pivot. And begin to do the policy pieces of what would make people think maybe this guy can actually be president. You have to go all the way back to Dwight Eisenhower to find a candidate with as little political experience. But eisenhower was americas war hero. Trump a businessman and tv star. Youre fired. Well, in 1976, Ronald Reagan was also dismissed as a b movie actor. And he almost took the nomination. Four years later, he was in the same spot as trump was in now. Trailing jimmy carter in all the polls. As the general election kicked off, reagan caught a form of populist anger and rode to it the white house. I Ronald Reagan do solemnly swear. Very good magazine this week. The party is far from sold on donald trump. I think what is required is that we unify the party. The bulk of the burden will have to come from the presumptive nominee. Im going to do what i have to do. I have millions of people that voted for me. I sat down with trump at omahas airport on friday just before a rally. I began by asking him what he plans to tell paul ryan when they meet face to face on thursday. Im going to say look this is what the people want. I just dont understand why he didnt you know, most people have come out in favor. Weve gotten tremendous endorsements over the last short period of time. Governor perry even came out. He was very rough. He came out with a beautiful statement. A magnificent statement. I have had so much support. I have had support from all the people that paul ryan works with. I mean, you see the congressmen theyre coming forward. Theyre coming forward in waves right now. And, im actually a little surprised its happening this quickly. Just about the i understand why a jeb bush or a Lindsey Graham, i dont care. I was rough with him and beat him badly. I mean, 48 to 2 in his own state. And i understand that. But paul ryan youre saying hes going to have to come to you . Youre not going to come to him. No, im going to certainly come down the middle. Im going to have to see what hes looking for. I was very surprised and very disappointed, because, you know, you should be we have to be cheerleaders for the Republican Party. We dont have to play cute. That became his line of the weekend. You know, he called me three weeks ago. We couldnt have had a nicer conversation. Its great. Well work together. And now, all of a sudden, he wants to be cute. Well see. Well see. As for republicans who say they wont support or endorse them. I dont want if somebody doesnt want to endorse, i dont want their endorsement. Its okay. Im going to release them. Its quite a list. President s george and george w. Bush. Mitt romney. Exrivals Lindsey Graham and jeb bush. Well, i understand jeb bush. I was rough with jeb bush. If i was him, i wouldnt vote for me either. If you want to know the truth, george. They should do that. But paul ryan is different. Hes the speaker of the house. The highest ranking elected republican in the country right now. Hes the chairman of the convention. Back in march, you said he would pay a price if he didnt get along with you. What is that price . Were going to see what happens. He wants to meet. Hed like to meet. I think were meeting on thursday. Well see what happens. Its just more drama. But i think its a mistake not to do this. We want to bring the party together. Does the party have to be together . Does it have to be unified . Im very different than everybody else, perhaps, thats ever run for office. I actually dont think so. It doesnt have to be unified . No, i dont think so. I think it would be better if it was unified. I dont think it has to be unified in the traditional sense. Im going to do what i have to do. I have millions of people that voted for me because i have strong borders. Because i want strong trade. I want good trade. I want trade. I dont want to be an isolationist. Whats happening with china, japan, mexico, theyre just absolutely eating our lunch. Its a shame. Its terrible. So i have to stay true to my principles also. Im a conservative. Dont forget. This is called the Republican Party. Not called the conservative party. There are conservative parties. Im a conservative. He swats away critics. Hillary clinton is focused on locking in her base by playing that womens card. He doesnt think much of equal pay for women. Because, of course, he doesnt think much of women, it turns out. Trump digging in with this remarkable statement. I mean, all of the men, were petrified to speak to women anymore. We may raise our voice. You know what . The women get it better than we do, folks. All right . They get it better than we do. Hes also up against the president. Republican women voters are going to have to decide is that the guy i feel comfortable with in representing me . And what i care about . Ill tell you what my reaction is. I won in massive doses and by a massive number new york, pennsylvania, everything. I won overall. But i won women, with men, i won with older, i won with soldiers. I won with highly educated. And not so highly educated. I won with everybody. Youre not worried about obama out there campaigning against you . Look, you know what . Once we start, i think its going to be good. Hillary clinton. The only thing she has going. She plays the woman card 100 . I saw her in a speech. Donald trump spoke harshly to megan kelly. Megyn kelly was terrific. She called me and came up to my office. She wanted to make peace. And, we did. We did. I mean, it was very nice. Some of the stuff is said as, you know, an entertainer. Because i have the apprentice. Or some of it was said in fun with certain shows like howard stern, whos a friend of mine. Youre not worried about the tapes of that coming back . What am i going to do . What the politicians say behind the scenes make whatever i said jokingly to howard and other people like baby stuff. What they tell me behind the scenes, talking about everything, is far worse than anything you have seen or ever will see about me. And they act like, oh, thats so terrible. So terrible. I mean, you know, its called give me a break. I watch Hillary Clinton like shes a baby. Look what happens with her family. I watch Hillary Clinton, like, oh, the way he talks to women. The way he talks to women. Well, take a look at her husband and what do you think he talks to women . So when i watch her, shes playing the womans card so much. And so loud. And frankly, i think its her only chance of getting elected. Listen, shes going to get shes going to get hit for it. Because its not appropriate. There was an article in gq about your wife, melania, this week. You said spouses should be off the table. Youre talking about bill clinton. Should he be off the table as well . It depends if hes involved in the campaign. If hes involved in the campaign, he shouldnt be. I think he gets involved when she plays the womens card. When she says donald trump was nasty to a woman. Number one, i have worked so well with women for so many years. You know, i broke you talk about the glass ceiling. What i have done in terms of jobs for women. To this day, i have so many women in my company doing so well, making so much money. In many cases making more than men in comparable positions. But, no, if hes involved in the campaign, he should absolutely, he could be brought into it. So fair game. I think fair game, yeah. No, i think fair game. As trump made clear friday night. Nobody in this country and maybe in the history of the country politically was worse than bill clinton with women. He was a disaster. And saturday. Hillary clintons husband abused women more than any man that we know of in the history of politics, right . Shes married to a man who was the worst abuser of women in the history of politics. Shes married to a man who hurt many women. And hillary, if you look and see study, hillary hurt many women. To trump, the rules of the game are clear. If youre on the field, you get hit. My wife was a very successful person. She did great. She was a very successful model. Now shes a homemaker. She just wants to she loves taking care of her son. Shes a good woman. And people that are married to people like me, especially people like me, um i hope there are others out there, who knows . But, they get really hit unfairly by so many different articles and writers. And theyre not looking to hurt them. Theyre looking to hurt me. Shes a very good woman. A tremendous heart. Very, very charitable. And its sort of unfair when they get treated nastily. Not so bad, but nastily. Much more coming up. Lets break in with the roundtable. Joined by abcs matthew dowd, democratic strategist donna brazi brazile. Alex castellanos, and rich lowry. Katrina vanden heuvel. Editor and publisher of the nation. Lets start with paul ryan and donald trump. Matthew dowd. A tweet from pair sarah palin t morning. Vows to defeat speaker ryan for defying trump. Says ryan motivated by 2020 white house ambitions. Kind of a declaration of war. Can this breach be healed . Does it have to be . Well, i think, actually, the breach is not between fundamentally between the elite and donald trump. Its between various members of the elite and gop voters. The problem for the gop elite is that the g voters have spoken and donald trump represents their party. I think paul ryan and others in the party have to decide if the Republican Party, as it is today, represented by donald trump, is they party their party anymore. Donald trump is not the problem for the gop elite. The Republican Voters are the problem for the gop elite. Paul ryan supposed to be the chair of the convention. I asked donald trump if he should be chair. Here it was. Can paul ryan chair the convention if he doesnt endorse you . Thats a question you have to ask him and reince and i guess me. Ultimately me. Yeah, thats why im asking you. What do you think . I have had so much support. Support from the people that paul ryan works with. Thats to matts point. It leads to an awkward situation in july in cleveland if he hasnt come around. Its like bob dole says, maybe paul ryan sleeps late that day at the convention. Paul ryan has power. Paul ryan has strength. He leads policy. The intellectual wing. The future of the Republican Party really is in paul ryans hands. Trump is a strong guy. Trump respects strength. Paul ryan says, okay, lets talk. This is good probably for both of them. This is the opening bid in that negotiation. You think its inevitable theyll come around . I think they have to come around. It will be up to trump to understand that he needs something paul ryan has. Paul ryan has the future. Hillary clinton is the candidate with the past. Shes more of the same. From washington. Hasnt done enough. Paul ryan is saying theres a new economy. The worlds connected. We have to open things up. He gave a brilliant speech at georgetown the other day about that. Trump is not running as a party guy. Trump is running as im one human being, person, im going to do a better job. He has no vision around which to rally a party. Thats what ryan could give him. He made it clear hes not running as a conservative. Solely as a conservative. You have the famous cover, trying to stop trump a couple of months back. Is paul ryan now part of the stop Trump Movement or is he, as alex is talk about, going to have to get on board . I think what ryan did was rightly an expression, of disgust with how many republicans just got on board immediately with no questions asked. I think given his position within the party and probably at the convention, its going to be really hard for him to sustain this posture. I believe hell seek some assurances from trump. That hell be a little more serious on policy. Serious in his demeanor. Trump would drop the muslim ban will be worth nothing. The day after donald trump became the Presumptive Republican nominee, he doubled down on banning muslims. Doubled down on building the wall. Paul ryan has been one of the republicans who have spoken out against the kind of bigotry of donald trump. And, i think for paul ryan to just basically rubberstamp donald trump without questioning the substance of some of the things hes said and the tone. Paul ryan has been talking about changing the tone. Yes, alex, hes apologized for, you know, attacking poor people in the past. I dont know if thats a quote unquote the policies of the future. But at least paul ryan understands that donald trump has to change his tone before he embraces him. Paul ryan is a member of the elites which matt spoke of. I think were seeing the crackup of the party. The elites didnt deliver for the base. Theyve been shafted over the years. Were also seeing, lets be honest. Donald trump is like the republicans frankenstein with orange hair. The Republican Party is reaping what it has sowed. Theres all this nostalgia about Ronald Reagan. Ronald reagan announced his candidacy in philadelphia, mississippi, where three civil rights workers were killed. We need an inclusive populism. Not the scapegoating populism to speak to the real anxieties and fears and frustrations. But with hope, not demonization. As donald trump is doing. I think katrina is right in part. There is a fundamental existential question. That the republican elites have to ask themselves is is paul ryan, what party is paul ryan the future of . Because the party right now says we want to ban muslims. They voted for donald trump. We want to build a wall. That is who the party is. To me, yes, paul ryan is the future. A future of a Dinosaur Party that is gone. The traditional critiques of republicans are theyre too obstructionist. And here you have donald trump saying he can make almost any deal that he can. And that theyre too rigidly ideological. You have him saying, i have no ideology whatsoever. Theres no doubt for the next interval, reaganstyle conservatism will be in exile in the party. And for the first time ever, we need to get our minds around this. The size of government going back since in new deal will not be a major issue in this general election. Thats critical. The Republican Party, the conservative movement for the last 70 years has framed itself by fighting against the civilizing advances of the new deal or great society. This is a moment where we should take advantage to think anew for what it means for peoples lives. Theyve lived in hypocrisy. On this issue. They say theyre for small government, but every person in office over the last 25 years has grown government. Both parties created a leadership vacuum. Democrats have more of the same from washington. Things are going not so hot. Republicans are saying our principles are only god for saying no and telling people what they cant do. Guess what . America is frustrated and angry. Theres one center of power in this country right now saying no. Bernie thats paul ryan. President obama obama said about Bernie Sanders, hes the fresh face of the Democratic Party. Hes more of the same. Hes not only moved the Democratic Party to the progressive left, hes moved a generation to the progressive left. That is the future. Well talk more about that in a moment. I want to ask rich one final question. How can paul ryan come around to donald trump if donald trump does not move on the ban on muslims or the deportation of immigrants . It will be very awkward. And look. Trump doesnt like foreign trade. Doesnt particularly like foreign nations, including our allies. Doesnt like foreign interventions and doesnt like foreigners when they come here. Thats the ideological core. Everything else is completely negotiable. Hes telling us. And all of you will be back later in the show. We have a lot more coming up. Well get more from donald trump. Well dig into his policies. And later, is this the year the third party breaks through . The libertarian candidate, gary johnson, joins us live. For the little things. Daughter. And the big milestones. And just like im there for her, pacific life is there to help protect me and my family so i can enjoy all lifes moments. Pacific life. This is not a reality show. This is uh a contest for the presidency of the United States. And, what that means is that every candidate, every nominee needs to be subject to exacting standards and genuine scrutiny. President obama urging scrutiny of all the candidates ideas on friday. Just as we were sitting down with donald trump. For a lively back and forth on his signature policies taxes, trade, making jobs here in america, and the ban on muslims. You say fixing the economy is your number one priority as president. Your tax plan is your most substantive and specific proposal out there. You said you believe in raising taxes on the wealthy, including yourself. But your plan gives a massive tax cut to the wealthy. How do you square that . It gives a massive tax cut to everybody. If you look at larry kudlow, he says its a great plan. He loves the plan. But more to the wealthy than everyone else. George, i say this to people all the time. I make deals. I negotiate. I put in a plan that has a massive, massive bigger than any other candidate. We have to negotiate with congress. Im not going to be able to say, like president obama, lets do an executive order. Okay . It would be wonderful. It would be a lot easier. You cant do it. Youre not supposed to do it. He may do something. Much of what hes done will be overturned by the courts. What im doing is im putting in a plan, and thats my maximum plan. Its what i want. Do you want taxes on the wealthy to go up or down . They will go up a little bit. And they may go up, you know but theyre going down in your plan. No, no, in my plan theyre going down. By the time its negotiated, theyll go up. Im negotiating with the democrats, im putting in my optimum plan. Its going to be negotiated. Its not going to stay there. Theyre not going to say, theres your plan. Lets approve it. Theyre going to say lets see what we can do. It will be a negotiation. Ill try to keep everything. What i really want is lower on business. Business, were the highest taxed nation in the world. I want lower in the middle class. The middle class in this country is getting decimated. I want ill fight like hell for that. But people like me and you should pay more . I dont mind paying more tax. Ill be honest with you. I dont mind paying more tax. Ive done very well over the last ten years. But under your plan, you pay less. But under my plan, its going to be negotiated. Ill be submitting Something Like what i did in terms of concept. Its a concept, george. Its a concept. The real concept is lower taxes for business. Lower taxes for the middle class. Lower taxes for everybody. Then well start negotiating. So if i want to get lower taxes, which is very important to me, im not going to put in high taxes or what i necessarily want. Im going to put in lower than i want. And were going to negotiate. In the end, will someone like me or donald trump pay more . I think more. But ill tell you. The middle class will pay less. I wouldnt mind paying more. We gotta do something. I wouldnt mind paying more. Business will pay less. The middle class will pay less. Were going to bring in our money. The corporate inversion, what is going on is incredible. We have trillions outside the country. We have a 10 tax on that money. Right now, they cant bring it back in. By not bringing it back in, george, thats its something youll negotiate with the democrats. On the trillions that are out there. On the taxes on the wealthy. Youre willing to pay more . I am. And you know what . The wealthy are willing to pay more. Weve had a very god run. We hear about obama. We hear all about we have had a good run. That would be a big change from your plan. Its not a change. Its a negotiation. Remember this. If i could get my plan approved this way it is right now, i would be very happy. Its not going to happen. We have a lot of people that will be negotiating this. They dont do very well. The world if you look at the United States with tax plans. Not a lot happens. It just sort of stays the same. Its a quagmire. One of the things im getting is big simplification. Were getting lower rates. Were getting a lot of things. Massive simplification. Getting rid of carried interest. It wont make Hedge Fund People happy. Those people pay fewer taxes. Youre getting rid of the loophole. Youre taxing it as regular income. It will go down from 23 to 15 . By the time it gets negotiated, it will be a different plan. I like to be i like to have my cards on the table. Were going to submit the opt number. Thats what i would like to get. Well fight for it. Were going to submit the optim optimum. From a practical standpoint, it will get renegotiated. In my opinion, the taxes for the rich will go up some what. Minimum wage. All through the primaries, you were against it. Now youre looking at it. Whats your bottom line . I am looking at it. I think people have to get more. Thats change from the primaries. Im allowed to change. You need flexibility. Whether its a tax plan, where you know youre going negotiate. Were going to come up with something. My real minimum wage is to bring Companies Back into the country. Theyll make more than the 15. Theyre going to make a lot more than that. Thats what i want to do. Lets talk about that. George, ive gone all over the country over the last really more the last eight weeks than before. Since last june. Ive gone over and seen factories just emptied. Beautiful factories, though now theyre not so beautiful, because theyre starting to crumble. But ive seen buildings that used to house thousands and thousands of people. Theyre empty. You could buy them for 2. Upstate new york. Pennsylvania. Carrier, ford, apple. You want them to come back. I dont want them to leave. Theyre not going to leave. Because if time we have to use the power of the tariff. We have to use the power of taxation. If we dont do that, were very, very foolish. Dont you have to lead by example. So many of the products in the donald j. Trump collection are made overseas. Bangladesh. China. Thats because you cant buy them here. I want to buy Television Sets here. I want to buy. I buy thousands of Television Sets here. I have a lot of different projects, as you probably have heard. I buy thousands of sets. I cannot buy a Television Set in this country. If you want other companies to make their products in america, shouldnt you make your products in america . They dont make a lot of the products. Shouldnt you lead by example . George, i told you. They dont make this stuff here. When i want to buy Brooks Brothers does. They dont make here. They dont make here. Not that i see. I make my hats. Make America Great again. I said, you must get the hats because i knew the first question was, where are they made . People grab the hats and look. Now i will say this. There are knockoffs from hundreds of companies. That hat is a successful thing. And i see them all the time. All over the place. I said, i want all of this stuff for the campaign. I want it to be made here. Its made here. And im very happy about it. By the way, the quality of the hat is better than all of the other ones that i see. President trumps in the oval office, hes got the head of carrier and apple there, theyre saying to you, why arent you making your products in america . George, they dont even make the stuff here. Its so hard to get. Why dont i buy Building Materials here . I say make sure you buy it in the United States. They come back. They dont even sell stuff in the United States. You dont think that undercuts your position . I dont think it does at all. What i want to do and what im saying, i want apple, which is taking a big hit lately. Which is sort of interesting. And a lot of people are starting to think, why . I want apple to make its product in the United States. You know, if you think about it, you save all the shipping. You save a lot of costs. One of the problems we have is the devaluation of the currencies. Right here in nebraska, so, they have a 38 tariff when they send out goods to china. 38 . Nobody knows that. I just found out about it. I said, when you send your goods, farm product, your goods to china, and the person was telling me. I spoke to the governor. Fantastic, by the way. The governor of nebraska is fantastic. Governor ricketts. I said, why, that tariff is unbelievable. And japan, its 38 . And they send their cars over and you can check. And ill guarantee you. Its probably zero. Its usually zero. Its a very low number. We have a double standard. Its not fair. Its going to be changed. You raise a lot of eyebrows with your position in debt and treasury bills. In an interview the other day. You said you might try to repurchase that at a discount. Wont that undermine the full faith and credit of the United States . No, thats a great thing. We have 19 trillion in debt. It will go up. The budget was horrible that was made six months ago. The omnibus budget. It will bring us up to 21 trillion. Who would sell to you at a discount . We have to do two things. Im a low Interest Rate person. If you have inflation, you have to slow things down. Right now, we have low Interest Rates. We have to rebuild the whole infrastructure of our country. I know the infrastructure. I have gotten to know it better now. You go to airports, theyre falling down. I mean, look at laguardia. You land at laguardia, its an embarrassment. Look at kennedy. Look at l. A. X. And newark. If you try to buy debt back at a discount, Interest Rates are going to go up . No. No. People are large on you know china has 1. 8 trillion of our debt. And theyre cheating us. And theyre friends of mine. Theyre not going to sell to you at a discount. You never know. You never know. All of a sudden, they have to sell at a discount. You dont know that. At some point, they might want to get out. Maybe they need their money. They might want to get out. When you can do it, when you can take advantage, you do that. You might want to issue new longterm debt at low Interest Rates. You may want to a combination of buy back debt and rebuild our infrastructure. Weve spent more than 4 trillion in the middle east and our country is going to hell. Lets talk more about the middle east. Your Foreign Policy speech, you said you wanted to work closely with our muslim allies to defeat isis. Sure. Dont you push them away with your plan to keep muslims from coming into the country . If anything, you make them stronger toward you. Ive heard that whole thing. Oh, if you do the ban. The ban is a temporary ban until we find out what is going on. The world trade center. San bernardino. We cant go through this. Look at germany, sweden. A small section of sweden is beyond out of control. We cant be the stupid people anymore. Right here in nebraska, theyre bringing in tremendous numbers of people. We dont know who these people are. We dont know where theyre coming from. I would stop that immediately. Youre in the oval office. President trump is there. David cameron who has criticized the proposal comes to you. Benjamin netanyahu comes to you. The leaders of jordan and egypt and turkey come to you and say, we want to help you in the fight guest isis, we cant help you if the ban is in place. What do you do . I disagree. Look, were not getting any help. If you look at the help, were not getting help. Theyre saying boots on the ground, boots on the ground. Theyre not fighting. We give them equipment, they run. They drop the equipment. The enemy picks up the equipment. I have a friend whose son has been years now, numerous terms in iraq. An unbelievable young guy. And i brought him in. I wanted to take to him about it. Theyre very dispirited. The equipment that the american soldiers have is not as good as what the enemy has. I said, how can that be . And they have our equipment. The enemy takes over the equipment that the other ones are using, our socalled allies are using and they drop it and run and run for their lives. The enemy picks up our equipment. 2,000 humvees, armor plated. The best in the world. And we have stuff out armorplate. He said its really sad when the enemy has our equipment and its better and newer than the stuff theyre using. Roundtable weighs in when we come back. Plus, he won more than 1 million votes in 2012. Polls in double digits now. Gary johnson will be on the ballot likely in most states. Well talk to him next. Living with chronic migraine feels like each day is a game of chance. [announcer] working together, well help you save for her future geology degree. Wells fargo. Together well go far. Yes, a lot of people hate trump. Dont forget, a lot of people hate hillary, too. No one is really happy with either of these choices. Its like, if youre in the mood for soup. You go to the diner to get some soup. The only two options are pumpkin corn chowder or Hillary Clinton. And youre like, on second thought, im not that hungry. All kinds of talk about a Third Party Candidate challenging Hillary Clinton and donald trump. Which means that former new mexico governor gary johnson and his Libertarian Party are gearing up for a big year. The party founded in 1971 may now be having its moment. They meet may 27th in orlando. 800 delegates. Theyre getting a lot of main stream attention. The Libertarian Party continues to represent the constitutional principles that i agree with. The party lines up with conservatives on fiscal issues. Social issues, not so much. Libertarians are about freedom of choice. Drugs, abortion, who you sleep with, nobodys business but your own. Maybe that will attract disaffected democrats. Ideology aside, there are a lot of prominent conservatives and potential candidates talking about a third way. Cant we do better . I think we can. I hope theres a serious independent candidate that steps forth. And i think that candidate could really surprise. I think that candidate could do well. If you got to a place where those are the two major party nominees, and i certainly hope that theyre not, i would have to look for a third party option. Against that backdrop, the Libertarian Party may make a tempting argument. Its on the ballot in 30 states. Hoping to hit 50 by election day. Gary johnson joins us now. Thank you for joining us this morning. So many conservatives talking about a third party. I wonder, do you see that as a threat or an opportunity for the libertarians . Have you talked to them about joining forces . I think it is a real opportunity. I do think that clinton and trump are the two most polarizing figures in politics today. When 50 of americans declare themselves as independent. I happen to think theyre libertarian, they just dont know it. You teed it up just right. Fiscally responsible. Individual choices. Freedom, liberty. Person should be making choices in their own lives, not the government. As long as those choices dont put other people in harms way. What is your direct pitch to the never trump conservatives . My direct pitch to everybody is to get on this website, isidewith. Com. And take the political quiz that at the end of the quiz, you get paired up with the president ial candidate most in line with your views. I side with. Hey, shouldnt you find out who you most pair up with and then just knock yourself out supporting that candidate . I happen to think that do you think theyll end up with you . I think that might be the case. But very objective. Why not give that a shot . At first blush, it seems like youre going to take more votes from donald trump and that Hillary Clinton. Do you agree with that . No, absolutely not. In this monmouth poll, key for me, george, is just continuing to be in these polls. But in the monmouth poll, where i was 11 , i took more votes from hillary than trump. But i think it really is, it draws from both sides. At the end of the day, 50 of americans say theyre independent. Well, where is their representation . I think it happens to be libertarian. Well see. In the past, i guess you got about a million votes last time around. Dont you need a lot more reach, a lot more money to get those numbers . Its a chicken and egg thing. If youre not in the polls, you dont get the attention. In the fall, at the heart of why this system is rigged, is the president ial Debate Commission. They say you have to be at 15 in the polls to get to the debates. Ross perot got there. Thats when the league of women voters backed out, saying the whole thing was a rigged game. Thats when the president ial Debate Commission moved in. That said, you gotta be in the polls for starters. And he was in the polls. Come the fall, it wouldnt be surprising to me to see, well, gary johnson, he wasnt polling well at all. The fact will be that i wasnt in the polls. Right now, theres a legitimacy to having me in the polls. And that is is that the Libertarian Party will be on the ballot in all 50 states. If im the libertarian nominee, i hope to be, ill be the only third party on the ballot in all 50 states. You have been strongly for legalization of marijuana. You were the ceo of a company that produced marijuana products. Youre open about the fact that you use them, as well. I guess youll have to give that up if you win the white house . I have said i would do that. I havent had a drink of alcohol in 29 years. And legalizing marijuana, for me, bottom line is making the world a better place. Medicinal products that dont kill anyone. Statistically legal prescription painkillers, antidepressants kill 100,000 people. And ive always maintained that legalizing marijuana recreationally will lead to less overall substance abuse. People will find it as a safer alternative than Everything Else out there, starting with alcohol. In colorado, the campaign to legalize marijuana was based on the campaign that marijuana is safer than alcohol. And lastly, george, the war on drugs. Huge human toll. There are tens of millions of americans who are convicted felons in this country, that, but for our drug laws, would otherwise be taxpaying, lawabiding citizens. Bottom line. If you were forced to choose between Hillary Clinton and donald trump, who is closer to your views . You know what, ive been voting libertarian a long time. I read a book in 1971 that really laid out what it was to be a libertarian. And i have identifiy eied mysel a libertarian ever since. Im always believing there will be a libertarian on the ballot. Gary johnson, thank you for joining us. Thank you. Up next, the roundtable is back. Can trump scramble the electoral map . How low is the Campaign Going to go . And is the field really now set . Would you consider being her Vice President ial running mate . Well, right now, were focused in the next five weeks of winning the democratic nomination. If that doesnt happen, were going to fight as hard as we can on the floor of the Democratic Convention to make sure that we have a progressive platform that the American People will support. And then, after that, certainly, secretary clinton and i can sit down and talk and see where we go from there. Could be a long shot. But who would have thought the democratic contest would go on longer than the republican. This has been some year. Lets bring the roundtable back. I want to look ahead to the general election. Matt dowd, let me begin with you. You were one of the few people to call the primaries back in september. You said donald trump was the strongest candidate for the nomination. The question looking forward, can he defy expectations again . I was bullish on him in the primaries. I think it becomes a much harder task in the general election. Can he win . And can he beat Hillary Clinton . Yes, its possible. I think its unlikely. I think Donald Trumps best assets are two things. Where the country is today. Twothirds think were on the wrong track. Twothirtds think that washington, d. C. , doesnt represent their values. And Hillary Clintons perception that shes disliked and distrusted. The problem for donald trump is hes more disliked and distrusted by twothirds of the country than Hillary Clinton is. Is it possible . Yes. I dont think its probable. You guys were talking about this in the green room. I have a slightly more optimistic view of trumps chances. I think theyre at least 5050, if not better. First of all, donald trump is a talented political salesman. Hillary clinton is one of the worst candidates in human history. Hillary clinton has never been up against a candidate like donald trump with, you know, ten arms and eight legs. This guy tweets at night. Crosses freeways with secret service details. But is that an advantage in a general election . Hes going to keep her offbalance all the way through this thing. But more importantly, hillary, the country is in trouble. The planes headed for the top of the mountain here. Were going to crash unless we pull back. Hillary clinton is more of the same. The country is in the mood for disruptive change. Alex, please get some more rest. The truth is, i think that, if you look at the electoral map there are 16 dead republicans out there who underestimated donald trump. I agree. Theyre getting a lot of sleep right now. Maybe not. No question. He scrambled the socalled electoral map in regards to winning. And the rules that allow you to get all of the delegates, that helped donald trump. Because he only received 35 to 40 of the raw vote. The truth is. Look at the electoral map and ask yourself what states can he put in play . I hear from my colleagues at the rest belt. He has to increase the white vote by four or five percentage points. Theres no evidence he can increase the vote there. I dont believe he can pull together the reagan democrats. Hillary clinton, i believe, can put georgia and arizona into play and other socalled red states that will enable her to get more than 300. Theres a poll out this morning showing Hillary Clinton within one point in the state of georgia. Where do you come down on the debate . First of all, modesty and a tip of the hat. As a critic. This is a guy who won a major Party Nomination with no pollster, no speech writer, no debate prep, very little knowledge of public affairs. And very Little Campaign organization. Thats an extraordinary feat. Hell attack hillary with a ferocity she has never encountered. And hes a very hard guy to handle. But the map is really tough. If hillary holds just the 19 states democrats have won every year since 1992 and adds florida, where she currently has a 13point lead and Donald Trumps disfavorable with hispanics is at 87 . And this is why i think, just one last thing. I think trump needs i might not like it. Donald trump needs to lean in and scramble everything. What does that mean . It wouldnt shock me if he ends up at the end of this to hillarys left on health care. She wont move to the center on trade and Social Security because trump will hit her higher taxes on the wealthy . Its important that Bernie Sanders keep running. Hes moving Hillary Clinton to the progressive left. Middle ea hes moving the party to the progressive left. Were going to witness a scorched earth campaign. I would compare it to psychological voter suppression. Donald trump may may politics so ugly. Doesnt that drive turnout up . Hell relentlessly attack Hillary Clinton. Were already seeing it. That could drive turnout down. Demographics are on Hillary Clintons side. Were living in a more socially tolerant, diverse country. Rising american majority. The Democratic Party needs bernies people, too. Young people. The working class and these rust belt states. The democraticleaning independents. And needs to put together creative, massive voter registration, grass roots campaigns. To get out the vote. I want to put that question to matthew dowd. It does pose a strategic question for Hillary Clinton. When shes looking at Something Like the Vice President ial pick. Does she try to double down on the Bernie Sanders democrats or reach out to some republicans disaffected . She needs to move to a populist rhetoric. She has to have a populist rhetoric. She needs a candidate with her on the ticket, probably not Bernie Sanders, but one who can voice the concerns of the populist america. Is the problem in this election is and all the debate we had over all the primaries as you said, i was very bullish on donald trump and said, i thought he was going to win this thing in the nomination process. He could get 50 million more votes than he got now and still lose in a landslide in the general election. To me, where were faced with the choices were faced with today. Theres rodents in the house. Theres rodents in the house. You want an exterminator. Do you call one that patches the holes and leaves it as is or bring in the guy, the crazy guy that could poison the dog and break the pipes . On this side of me, i have a guy who believes that were about to hit a mountain. And a guy with roaches. Roaches . Really, rats. I do believe this is a historic opportunity. The country is at a cross roads. I think what Hillary Clinton has to do is abandon any notion that she can run a Traditional Campaign. Donald trump, the pseudocampaign. Do you think she can do that . I do. I think so. In this time of disruption and populist anger. Look what happened to the republicans. I think shes become a better candidate because of Bernie Sanders in the race. She understands you cant run a Traditional Campaign in this time of disruption. I would conclude with one thing. Were leaving something out of this discussion. The media. I come back to the media. I dont know the media has already enabled donald trump in his etchasketch reinvention. We saw it the other day with the taco bowl thing. He comes out with a tax cut. He recants his tax plan. The media is about hillary and donald dueling over taco bowls. What are you talking about . I just spent ten minutes on his tax plan. There are good i want to say there are strong important journalist who is are trying tough audience. No, no. Trump presents the media. I dont mean to cut you off. We have a computer well be right back after this from our abc stations. Its the Opening Ceremony tonight for a different kind of sporting event. The invictus games. An International Paralympic style competition for paralyzed veterans kicks off in orlando with participants from a dozen countries. Bob woodruff is there. Tell us about how the games got started. Hes got 14 Different Countries now competing in this. These guys, youll see, this will be very emotional, george. Theyre very competitive. They want to win. Theyre fighters. They dont want to give up. A lot of them, after this, will head to rio. Also for the paralympics down there. In september. Important for the wounded warriors. But also for their families, bob. Yeah.
