It was a horrific scene here, because of a young person who died along these tracks, but also because there were friends and families here, and we witnessed them put this story together and realize it was their loved one who died. This is 18yearold britany silva. She was college bound, says her father, until this evening, when she was killed by a southbound amtrak train. This man was walking close to her as she began to cross the tracks. I saw her. Go now, go now, go now, now. Reporter he says silva was on a phone. The phone you see here in the pink and blue case. Friends and family walked up to the crime tape to see that phone shattered on the ground. It is the moment they realized it was her. Cindy says she was here just after it happened, and says she talked to a witness. She says her daughter was walking along the tracks today, and she called to find out if her daughter was okay, and she was. But the desperate calls of britany silva were not answered. Their grief shared by people taking in the scene. I feel bad. Reporter the family put this story together, of course by seeing that cell phone on the ground. It was confirmed when sheriffs deputies brought her purse to them. This is where she lived right behind us. There are conflicting reports. The Police Department says they have witnesses who saw her on her cell phone with ear buds in her ear, as she crossed those tracks. Other witnesses say she had her phone up to her ear, thats a detail that will likely be sorted out as this investigation goes on. Last year, in california, 76 people were killed while walking on train tracks. Thats more than in any other state. A new Public Service announcement hopes to remind people of the danger. Fire officials in San Diego County have put together an Arson Task Force now to find the cause of every fire that was burning last week. They say they are investigating the larger devastating fires that made headlines along with several smaller ones that may be suspicious, and possibly connected.
