Live nearby. Again, they describe this as a very violent earthquake. I talked to a woman who lives not too far from here and she said she had some significant damage at her home, chimney damage, damage inside the house. We are going to head over there next and well show you what that looks like later on. Reporting live from American Canyon, im jodi hernandez, back to you. Jodi there at the epicenter in American Canyon, good morning, if youre just waking up, raj mathai and laura garciacannon. A 6. 0 earthquake centered in the napa valley. They are calling it the south napa earthquake. And significant damage is in downtown. A lot of Historic Buildings. We have crews around. Heres some of the takeaways right now. 70 injuries at the queen of the Valley Hospital in napa. No fatalities reported. Two major injuries and plenty of minor injuries. That is a very good and. Laugh things happening, as they usually are this time of year in napa, and it would have been significant in temz of injuries had this happened during Business Hours. Even at that courthouse, at the historic courthouse. Its a working courthouse. A functioning, working courthouse. You would have had dozens of people in there at least, and all the wine bars and restaurants in that area. The difference here, a big difference here is that if you remember back in 1989, it was more of a rolling earthquake, and now from all accounts, everyone is saying this has a couple of jolts, and can you really hear it. Heres wufrt big issues we could talk about now. If are you just watching the coverage or in the coverage in napa area, the probability of a magnitude 5. 0 or greater in the next five days is 50 . Were probably not done here. Magnitude 5. 0 or greater in the next five days is 50 , and thats coming from the usgf based. Weve had at least three dozen yaf shocks as well. The strongest being a 3. 6 aftershock. As people are going out and about assessing damage, they all need to be on guard because we could have some major aftershocks continue. As you mentioned in the next, you know, five to seven days. As it extends on, then the chances decrease. No doubt, this will be certainly a wakeup call. We always know that we are in earthquake country. We have people talking to the usgf as we gather information. One of the big things is after an earthquake, the family is okay. Then. They wanted to know its a perfect segue because there are going to be more yaf shocks likely expecting them. I went and checked out the california seismic safety committees checklist on the state website to find out specifically what the state of california says you should do. This is a pg e checklist. Of course, make sure everybody is safe. Inspect buildings for damage. Evacuate if you smell gas, and check for damaged power lines. Heres what i gleened from the state additionally, though. First of all, if your house is damaged, do not go back inside of it because what could happen if its unsturdy is theres another aftershock, and the house could be affected, compromised. If you are inside of it, that could spell real trouble. Heres something i definitely did not know that you are going to want to keep in mind. Leave the gas on at the main valve at your house. Unless you think that youre smelling gas or that its leaking, but if its not doing those two things, leave it on because what we found out here was that months later weeks or months later, if it turns out that everything is restored, and you try to nonprofessionally turn that gas valve back on, then you can have explosions or real safety hazards. Just leave everything asis unless you smell something thats not right. Put on a long pants and long sleeves because of the fact that youre going to have a lot of the damaged objects around you. Possibly more aftershocks. You want to make sure youre protect from bruises and the leak. Do not call emergency phone numbers unless its a lifethreatening situation. That is because in these sorts of circumstances theres obviously lots of calls to the police, to 911, to health services, and you dont want to overwhelm the phone lines. Only do that if it is an emergency. Expect aftershocks. Obviously we know about this. One more i think that wasnt top of mind for me, but should be something to keep in mind, check your chimney. If theres cracks or anything wrong with that chimney because if theres something wrong with it and it goes like that for months and years if and youre not aware of it, that could cause a fire. Check the chem any. Leave the house if theres anything wrong with the sturdyness or general structure of it, and leave the main gas valve on unless you smell something that is not right or that its leaking. Keep those things in mind. Ill have more for you throughout the course of the morning. Back to you guys. Excellent information there. Thank you very much. We do want to tell people, there are Evacuation Centers that are open right now. Fwras church is one of them. You see it on salano avenue not far from redwood road and the highway there. Napa high school as well on jefferson street. Tlooers patients treated there. Weve only heard of two major injuries reported. The fire sprouted up as well as nearby Mobile Home Park. We dont know inform injuries from that site as well. Firefighters quickly rushing to the scene putting that one out. They are also assessing now damage from all of these areas. There was a significant fire. Well get that video for you in just a moment. There was a significant major fire at this Mobile Home Park. There are also several smaller fires in this area in napa and the surrounding area. Lets bring in nbcs Terry Mcsweeney who is here with us. What do you have from there, and whats really happening in exactly where you are . Well, what happened is the Emergency Services operation is actually located in downtown napa, and because the damage to that building, the Operation Center has moved out here to the sheriffs department, and joining me now is the chairman of the board of supervisors for napa county. This is mark luce. First of all, could you tell me what stands out in your mind as far as what we know right now about this earthquake and the aftermath . Its really good news that we had no fatalities. Were fortunate that it occurred when it did. Obviously, we have a lot of physical damage, and that could have been more disastrous. It happened during working hours. Were busy assessing exactly what that damage is, but thankfully no fatalities. We do have a number of lacerations and those types of injuries. What can you tell us about how prepared downtown napa was . There seems to be bricks coming down. Some damage to the structures down there. Of course, it was a 6. 0 earthquake. Moderate to strong earthquake. How prepared were the buildings down there . You can tell the newer buildings from the older buildings as you walk downtown. Theres a new courthouse right across the street from the old courthouse, and so some of the retro fitting obviously didnt do as well as we had hoped it would. Some facades have come apart. Were going have to assess what that all means. What kind of challenges are your Emergency Response people having . I think were operating well. Everyone has reported, and were out assessing what the damage is around the county, and coordinating with pg e and others to make sure were Getting Services up and going as soon as we can. You did have a word of a request for the people of the town of napa. Yes. well, we work closely with the city of napa. And youre asking people to maybe stay away . Yes. We would appreciate if citizens stayed in their homes if they could and stayed out of the way of Emergency Responders as we try to get to the area that we have to get to to do our work. All right. Chairman of the board of supervisors for napa county, mark luce, thank you for taking a moment to talk to us, but send it back to the studio. Thank you very much. Its nice to see so many Civic Leaders that are out kind of helping to assess the situation and provide information as well. Thanks so much, terry. These are pictures that were just getting in right now. This is the Napa Post Office. As you see, there are so many Historic Buildings in the area. It is crumbled to the bottom there. This is the damage that weve seen from the exterior. We dont know the exat the particular time, but look through the windows. You can see that there are bricks inside of there as well. Were going see the closure of a lot of buildings as not only the damage is assessed, but most likely these are historic. Many have not have been retro fitted in recent years. Some of which have, we understand, but look at the cracks to the center right of your screen there. I mean, that building, no doubt, structurally very, very damaged. And had this happened during Business Hours for any of these buildings, it would have been a lot worse in terms of the injuries. The Napa Post Office is what you are looking at reason. Nearby the napa courthouse, built in the 1870s. That was empty, obviously, at 3 20 this morning, but usually its functioning and filled with people. That was retro fitted in 2004. However, its hard to retrofit something at a 6. 0 earthquake. Exactly. In terms of that damage. These are pictures that were just getting in live. Our chopper is over the scene kind of flying over, and were seeing so many reports of buildings just kind of in crumbles. The good news is that only two major injuries have been reported. The extent of those we do not know, nor how about 89 people that were treated in local hospitals so far. You heard the supervisors say the best bet is to stay near your home right now. So many people want information understandably after such a large earthquake, but well try to provide the most that we can to you here, getting these live pictures. There is the fear of so many aftershocks as well. We really need to make sure that everyone is aware of that. A 54 chance of a 5. 0 or greater in the next week. Weve already had about three dozen aftershocks. Most of us know just the dangers we have in earthquake country. We do know that. That is significant reminder of those aftershocks of the next five days. Were going to feel it. You are looking at live picture here from our nbc chopper. The most significant damage visually in terms of fires now happened just a couple of hours ago. That was a Mobile Home Park in napa and the flames were intense. Heres just some of the footage that we got from the ground and from our chopper. No injuries here, thankfully, but you can see the damage to this Mobile Home Park. Many of those homes flattened. Exactly. They burst into flames. Crews arrive quickly on the scene. That right there, they actually just let smolder to the ground. Fire crews, as you see, were safely nearby. We thought this is in the center of the Mobile Home Park. There are actually other ones that were untouched and damaged. The good news is that there wasnt a lot of wind in that area. See the smoke just rising straight into the area because there was that threat of burning embers. The good news is that they were able to keep control of this fire, but, yeah, those are completely devastated. Happening in the middle of the night, most people are, what, theyre sleeping. You know youre thankful that people were able to get out quickly enough, but now, you know, they dont have a place to live. The most significant quake weve had in 25 years since the 19 1989. You can see the little dots here of yellow. Those are where weve had the aftershocks. Even on the east bay, a little bit of activity. We have reports out in vallejo. A lot of damage out there as well, which we do have crew on the way. Were going bring you that information as soon as we get it. Strongest aftershocks so far with a 3. 6. Thats a pretty good shaker at 5 47 this morning. Were going to keep tracking these for you, and bringing that information to you as it comes into our newsroom. It is coming in so fast, though, this morning. This is all aorganized to the usgs. A 54 chance of a 5. 0 or greater in the next seven days. You want to keep that in mind. A 5. 0 or greater could do some damage. A 10 to 15 chance that this could actually be a precursor to a larger quake. Yeah, weave had 30 reports of aftershocks over the past hour or so, but in total, 43 in all. Really you want to have a plan in place. Not just for today or tomorrow, but like we said, were going to be under the gun for the next five days. Bay area, its on top of an active plate boundary, the entire bay area. You want to identify the potential hazards in your home. Maybe you have a big trophy that could easily get knocked off a high shelf. You want to bring that down. Have a family plan for kids in school if the quake hits during the day. Make sure you have your emergency numbers ready to go, that they have those emergency numbers in their phones. Also, three days worth of nonperishable supplies, water, food, and, of course, firstaid kit. We well have reports of other fires in the area. Were trying to map those out. Theres really no window. This morning that will hopefully maintain, and well keep you updated. Back to you, raj and lawyura. Thank you, christina. 6. 0 earthquake that was centered in the napa area this morning. We are feeling at least three dozen aftershocks so far. 3. 6 or greater. We continue to warn people of what is going on. We have had some road closures in the area. Some of which have already been reopened. Mike joins us right now with a look at the commute out there. Its a sunday morning, so thats the good news, mike. Yeah. Thats right. Thank goodness, as you have mentioned, that it happened at 3 20 in the morning between all the festivities in downtown with the crush going on right now in napa. We had a lot of wine festivals up there. Those were calmer roads at that time, and we had the festivities at the race track for the indy cars. Well talk about that in a second. As laura has just mentioned, there were closures that have been scattered around the napa area. 121, highway 12. In fact, lets show you video that we got from Terry Mcsweeney. We heard him interviewing some of the Council People up there. Look at this crack in the roadway. When we have an earthquake, we typically talk about maybe some structure damage thats visible. They inspect all the roads. Look at that. Theres a ten inch looks like spread there between two sections of the roadway, and thats been the case in many spots all around the north bay. Thats huge. Cars cant safely travel through that. They coned off parts of the roadway. Partial roadway and Traffic Control. We dont have any full closures reported for the north bay. Right now the off ramp for highway 37, sonoma boulevard, has reopened, but the transition to highway 29 was an issue for a time this morning, and over here 121 and highway 12, and over here another concern. This is at soda canyon road up in the area right around napa soda springs, and we have reports around silverado trail that theres an electrical wire on the side of the road thats smoke, and its a live wire. We have more issues for pg e continue to address in addition to the outage which is taking out thousands of people in the area, which, by the way, means Traffic Control wrash local signals may be out. If theres no Traffic Control there, youll treat it like a fourway stop. Well continue to follow this. Again, highway 12 is reopened after some earlier closures for 121 and highway 12. Right around the los carneros area. 116 and 121 north of the sonoma raceway. The reason i pointed that out in addition to the other Traffic Control, its because the indy continues with the event today. Foerlgs driving to the area coming off highway 116. So far out of nevada no major issues. Well continue to track that and coming out of vallejo we did have issues around sonoma boulevard. Highway 37 itself is open in both directions. Now, we continue to follow those north bay Traffic Controls which has chp inspecting systems, and also cal tran inspecting the system from San Francisco down towards the south bay. Theyre continuing, but so far no delays and no problems reported for any of that structure. Bart, sfm, the muni system, they have reported a clean slate. South bay, peninsula, and the east bay, theyre all clear as far as the structures. Thats better news. We follow to the north bay sending it back to you. Mike with us. A lot of people going into wine country waking up now realizing whats happened in napa. There is damage there. As mike mentioned, sonoma raceway, thousands still going there. No damage at the raceway. The traffic is an issue around those highways. The napa wine trade is not working today. They are not send it out. Weve seen so many people that are they travel to the wine region as well, and theyre coming out as well feeling their first earthquake here in california for the first time for them. So many people are assessing the damage now. Theyre okay, which is good news. Weve only heard reports of two major injuries. At least almost 90 350e78 that were treated at local hospitals for cuts and lacerations, what not. This is a good part of the significant damage that weve seen in downtown napa. All of those beautiful Historic Buildings that they have there now are covered with cracks, bricks crumbling as well. The structural damage on some of these buildings is going to be significant. These are some of the pictures even before the sunrise people were out there trying to gather information. Kind of assess. That is what were going to learn this morning. How much what was damaged . Weve seen homes. This is significant in downtown napa as well where the bricks just tumbled down on to cars. The injuries are minor. Specifically exactly 89 patients have been treated. One of the local hospitals as of 8 00 this morning. About 20 minutes ago at the latest it was 89 patients with minor injuries. Now, we talk about this. This is the south napa quake. Thats the name of it. Its along the west napa fault line. Usually were dealing with san andreas or the its a fault line were not as familiar with as the major ones. The west napa fault lines. When we talk about fault lines, weve learned this for so many years, its always the soil and what its like and why its theres so much movement. Rob, one of our meteorologists is with us. When we talk about the soil, but in wine country, a lot like the marina in San Francisco, what we had in 1989, but in wine country its that soil which is that softer soil and more unstable. Is that correct, rob . Youre absolutely correct, raj. When you do compare loma prieta, you will the major damage we saw around San Francisco, its due to the soft mud and the sedentary type soil that youre referring to. It has a way of amplifying and increasing the amount of shaking motion, and specifically downtown there right along the edge of the river, youre absolutely right. Its another location similar to where the epicenter was where you have the softer bay mud, d sedentary mud in downtown napa. In those locations even potentially even locations further away from the epicenter, right there near the river bed are locations where you do get increased and enhanced shaking motion. You see the pictures, the aerials of the damage. You see the buildings, some of the masonry and other items that have not experienced shaking like this and some estimates since 1898. It makes them see the type of damage that you are seeing to some of the brick. Downtown napa and up, straight up and through wine country there right in the valley, those are locations having acceleration and amplification of earthquakes at this time. Rob here with us on the phone. Talking about the soil here and what makes our area so special in terms of wine making. Is that soil and perhaps thats the damage here. Just the soil moving beneath us. Yeah. In some cases like we saw with San Francisco with loma prieta, it literally liquifies more or less like quick sand underneath the ground and causes massive deformations at the surface of the ground. Sometimes you have these things referred as faults. Sandoval or a map of this place along the highway systems, as mike pointed out this morning, youre seeing extensive roadway cracking where some of that action could have taken place just below the surface. Interesting. Were talking about our major fault lines here. This is one we havent talked about in years. I cant think of the last time we talked about the west nap wra fault line, but thats now the discussion moving forward the next couple of days. Yeah. Or the more well known. Of course, Hayward Rogers creek fall system which is about four miles west of the site or the green valley fault system. Seven miles to the east of the site. In between there are minor fault systems that interlace around the bay area. Every hill side or mountaintop at some point probably helped form by some kind of seismic activity, whether they be earthquakes. Many times you might have an incident like this where maybe the return period of a quake is 6. 0, hasnt been well cataloged. I think the similar event much more extreme in terms of the north ridge quake down in los angeles in the san fernando valley. That was along kind of below the radar, so to speak, for threats to Southern California where everyone does focus on the san andreas here and up in the bay area too. There could be several moderate fault systems between the known ones that are easily capable of 5. 0s and 6. 0s every 50 to 100 years. The franklin fault earlier, it is, in fact, the west napa fault line, and 6. 0, but the thing is that no significant aftershocks. We just got one of 1. 8, so a smaller one in the American Canyon region as well. Thats what people should watch for in the coming days as well, right, rob . Yeah. Thats a normal aftershock sequence. Our friends will let you know within the next few days earthquakes at 4. 0 or larger, one or two of those seem likely. Mention cascade and decrease downward in intensity over the next few weeks and months. When you see the damage there in napa and the type of buildings that have been damaged fairly extensively, you know, the aftershock sequence, you have a 6. 0 earthquake and a 4. 0 earthquake thats not as strong as the damage thats already been done from the main quake, so these are very hazardous areas to be around. Until the aftershock sequence starts to throttle back, you could see more facades collapsing or bricks coming down in areas that have already seen extensive damage this morning. There are some pictures that were taking as we talk to you live. Thank you so much, rob, live talking about the geology of this as well. That is the fear. You see some of the damage. This is from the big quake, the 6. 0 that hit about 3 20 this morning. This is downtown napa. Our own sheryl herd is there live this morning. Sheryl, a lot of people still coming out. They want to see the damage thats been done out there. A lot of people coming out talking with me. What i learned just two minutes ago is that there was a 3. 0 earthquake last week, and we tend not to report those types of things because, you know, native californians, very dont really think its a big deal. Of course, this is a big deal, as you see the live pictures of that car that was hit by the facade, bricks that came crashing down, and are you looking at the route that down the street you see that theres a lot of damage. Probably a lot more damage inside these buildings than we see outside. Of course, authorities arent allowing us inside. With me live right now is sarah phillips, and shes from new york city, but shes a native of Southern California, so you are here for a vacation . Yes. We came out for vacation the other day. What did you feel this morning . Woke you up, im sure. Woke us up, and it was just shaking. Everything was shaking. Are you staying in a highrise, or did things come off the wall . What was it like . Were just staying at a hotel, and its a lowrise, and although drawers opened and everything was shaking, and it brought back memories for me of living in los angeles. How long have you lived in new york, and can you compare this one to what you felt in when you lived in Southern California . Well, i have been in new york 30 years, but i was a lot younger growing up, so this wasnt as scary to me, but it just brought back a lot of memories. I said to my husband, well, here we are in california. Yeah. Welcome to california. Your husband right over there. He is kind of, like, not wanting to talk to us. What did he say about this . Oh, he just grabbed me and hugged me, which was such a wonderful moment. Im glad everyone is safe and no one is hurt. All right. Im very thankful for that. All right. Enjoy your stay here, sarah, from new york city. Im looking at people, and they are just coming outside. When did you just first come out here . First of all, whats your name . Sunny rowe. You felt the quake. Did it wake you up . I used the bathroom about 3 20 in the morning, and i went to lay down. As soon as i laid down, that whole house just shook. My brother came yelling just to make sure everybody was all right. Were you concerned about the aftershocks . Thats what i was sitting there waiting while i was on twitter and facebook and talking to people. I was waiting for the aftershocks. Did you feel one . What time . We felt probably about 45 minutes later. Yeah. We felt a little one. They said that there were going to be more, and then they said about a week that another one can happen. About a 6. 0. Are you from the area . I live off of redwood road. What kind of damage to your property . You know, everything just blew off the cabinets and stuff like that. The worst thing was for my mom, she lives in a mobile home, and her mobile home got destroyed. Yeah, thank god my mom wasnt there. Thrown off its foundation. What about fire . No. The fires were about two mobile homes over right next door. Our neighbor our neighborhood is still out. Its still theres no electricity. Yeah. No yeah. A lot of devastation away from the downtown area. We are live here at third and brown in Historic Downtown napa, and you can see the live pictures here. We have a chopper overhead. You see people are coming down taking pictures. You are looking at this is third street, and a lot of the bricks falling down to the ground. You see a lot of the Emergency Personnel making sure that people are safe. To my left you see the justice center. You havent seen this in a while. That big gaping hole in the old city hall. Lawyers telling me that they have court cases to be taking place here, and im sure this will be shut down for some time. With me live right now is armando, and what was your experience this morning . Terrible. I felt it, and i told my mom to go outside, and then my neighbor i told my neighbors, and then it was awful. An hour after we felt another one. You did feel the aftershock . Yeah, we did. People were telling me that theres going to be quite a few more. Lets see what happens. And i think were looking at some chopper pictures overhead of the church. The steeple is kind of tilted. Stained glass windows broken. That Historical Church down there. Back here, armando, theres a lot of sense of community, people helping one another. Correct. Napa people, they help each other a lot. Should be good for the next couple of days. Did you smell any gas in your neighborhood when this happened . Not really. I smelled a fire near. Yeah. Okay. All right. You have a lot of cleaning up to do . Yes. A lot. A lot of cleaning up. Probably not going to work for a week. Okay. Armando, thank you very much for speaking with me. If you smell gas, turn it off. In fact, if you live in one of those areas like in the Mobile Home Park where mobile homes are being tossed about or if you live nearby on south emola, im hearing that theres a lot of damage there, maybe its a Good Practice just to turn it off just in case because you just never know. If you are a smoker, dont light that cigarette because if theres a whiff of smoke, something even more devastating could happen. These are just some tips that i have picked up along the way. People are waking up to this devastation. I think its going on four hours now, coming down, taking pictures of whats happening down here, and downtown napa. On the other end its a very popular wine bar. You see that the top of the roof is caving down. Talked with a lawyer who used to have his office here, and he really became overcome with emotion because he just cant fathom that this is happening in the downtown area. So kind of the same thing. A lot of folks are milling around. A lot of emergency crews coming down. Were looking at the registration restoration, rather, Management Company checking out the damage, and were doing the same right now. Back to you, guys. Sheryl herd live from downtown napa where were seeing some significant damage from the 6. 1 earthquake that hit about 3 20 this morning. They are calling it the south napa earthquake. It was on the west napa fault line. We only know of two major injuries reported this morning. Several others were reported cuts, lacerations, what not at a local hospital there. The good news is that not many people injured, but significant damage now that the sun is up, and its reported in the downtown napa area. Theres a big mobile home fire as well. Queen of the Valley Hospital is the main hospital right now in napa. Theyve seen about close to 89 patients at this hour, minor injuries. There are Evacuation Centers also, so if you have damage to your home or where you are, here they are. At the grace church and Napa High School all within the area. Thats what weve been working on, laura. 3 20, American Canyon was the epicenter. People felt is in vallejo, and napa has the most damage, and the Biggest Development right now is you just mentioned it, from 6. 0 what weve been working with and now its officially a 6. 1 earthquake. 6. 1 earthquake. It was upgraded. Many times its downgraded. This is one of those few times that theyve upgraded it from 6. 0 to 6. 1. For some reference now, 1989 was the biggest earthquake weve had in terms of the biggest weve had since then. Since that time. That was 6. 9. The loma prieta. That happened at 5 00 during a week day. A lot of damage and a lot of people were affected, obviously. We all remember that. This one, though, overnight early this morning, so the damage was limited in terms of injuries to people. 6. 1. Some of the Historic Buildings there. The bricks tumbling from buildings and on to cars. I do have some information from the city of napa itself. Gas lines crews are responding to approximately 50 gas line breaks. There are approximately 30 water main breaks. Both Treatment Plants are running, though, so theres no damage to them. Thats good news. Some areas have no water due to some of the main breaks, and some areas, you may be experiencing low or no pressure at all. The main thing here, the message i want you to know is that water remains safe to drink in the napa area. That is of great concern. When Something Like this happens that people have enough water to drink. City crews are assessing already the infrastructure of buildings and damage. We can tell exteriors of these buildings, as can you see from the pictures that weve been gathering from overnight and into the morning, but interiors, thats a whole other story. Some Historic Buildings that have been damaged. The sam key laundry, the goodman library, and, of course, the napa county courthouse. Bricks tumbled. The structures are damaged. At least two commercial buildings in that downtown area are set to be very severely damaged. Were talking about the 6. 1 right now, and as we know here in the bay area, just living in this region, the aftershocks continue. Dozens of them. Most of them minor. However, the probability of a significant aftershocks, a 5. 0 or greater, the probability is that 50 in the next five days. Thats something to keep in mind as we talk about the damage. We also have with us this morning, our chief meteorologist jeff, who is joining us right now from napa where all this damage is. Jeff, are you with us . Yeah. Were right here at meadow brook in napa, and we are actually right along one of the fault lines here. Its what the residents call the redwood falls. Some may also be referring to this as the napa fault. You can see the undulation in the road with what happened this morning that is now upgraded as the 6. 1 earthquake this morning. It sent a jolt right here to napa and nearby American Canyon that lasted some 20, 25 seconds. It was that was shifting of many of these homes to left and also the right, and i want my photographer jeremy to pan off to the left, and you can see this home that is off to the left. The fault runs underneath that house. Youve got more damage, more cracked streets about three blocks back behind that, and then as we pan off to the right, again, you can see the force of this as the road was just actually lifted up and cracked, and even turning over the sidewalk back here behind me. Again, this is the power and the force of this quake this morning. I want to bring over paul barron. He is trying to get his house at least a little bit in order here. We know there is the threat, of course, of these aftershocks that weve just learned could be as high as 5. 0 within the next three to six day period. Paul, the damage out front is unbelievable. What was it like this morning . It was absolutely crazy. Ever been woken up straight out of bed in the middle of the night with all this violent shaking. It just sounded like bombs or explosions going off, and it just wouldnt quit. You know, you walk out, and you kind of figure out what the heck just happened, and you see six inches of broken glass all over your kitchen and nothing is hanging on the walls, and everything is on the ground in sham bells and dog is barking. Sirens going off. Neighbors outside. I know for myself it was going on for about 20 seconds. Do you think you guys will be able to recover okay inside, or are you going to have major structural damage . I think the structural damage that weve noticed so far will be fairly minor, so i think were lucky there. Its just going to be getting to work and cleaning up and make a purchase, buy a couple of new dressers and glasses to drink some waters. Something to eat my breakfast with, you know . We live in earthquake country, of course. We talk about being prepared although time, but even this morning probably theres nothing you could have read or learned about that could have prepared you for this . If there was, i surely would like to know where i found that information. I think youre completely right. All right. Thank you so much, paul. We really appreciate it. Were going to let you get back to your house and kind of getting that stabilized. Raj, the scene out here is really unbelievable. It seems like something out of a movie. Its just hard to believe the force and the pressure that came up with this earthquake this morning. Again, tearing up not only the street you see behind me on meadowbrook, but also several streets here right throughout this neighborhood in napa. That video there, the scene there is incredible. Like you just described, is that just in that point right there, and you are meadowbrook drive near brown valley elementary. You said several streets are like that that you have seen thus far . Yeah. Meadowbrook and also buman. If you know this area at all, you know that buman, theres a lot of streets that run off of that. Were hearing from the residents around here what you are seeing back here behind me with that roadway being cracked, actually it happens for about two to three blocks, if i remember correctly, in both directions. Its not just this street, but its several other streets that are dealing with damage like this. That is actually part of the fault line thats underneath there, and thats why you are seeing that severe crack. Thats where some of the shifting of the earth happened. It woke up a lot of folks. Weve been talking about this information a lot. It was extremely shallow quake. I leave the calculation about 6. 7 miles below the earths surface. Thats why a lot of people felt that not only here in napa and American Canyon, but all the way down towards parts of the south bay as well. We have a lot of neighbors and residents coming out here to check out the scene, and as weve been saying, there still is the threat of aftershocks. You want to remember the simple things. Drop, cover, and hold. We could get aftershocks as high as a 5. 0. Were hearing from the usgs maybe in the next five to seven days. While its important to get some of this debris out of the way, if you feel anything shaking again, you want to take cover. Talk about the damage, but we are now just seeing that damage right behind you, jeff. As we continue to take live pictures of downtown napa as well, we saw a lot of the Historic Buildings structurally damaged there. We want to go to michelle roberts. Shes actually live with the usgs this morning with the very latest updates we have on this earthquake to hit napa. Michelle. Well, just in the last hour, though, there have been a handful of aftershocks so far that brings us to 40 aftershocks. The biggest being 3. 6. The latest information out of usgs this morning is it has been upgraded from 6. 0 to 6. 1. Can you explain why those numbers have been changed . So if you add in a few more digits of precision, the magnitude of this earthquake is right around 6. 05. So that last digit, as additional statements come in and the analysis is refined, that last digit is changing, and that sort of is taking in the roundoff, so sometimes right now its between 6 and 6. 1 depending which information is going in. This may continue to manually override that. Its sort of changing between 6. 0 and 6. 1 because of the difference in precision. So we could see changes in the number. Its not just the shaking. The naltsz can change the last third digit in terms of precision, and it just happens to be it wasnt 6. 00. It was more close to about 6. 05, so its right there, and we are only reporting two digits, the numbers may change continue to change somewhat. Its still going to change. Given our instrumentation, it is relatively precise, so its the third digit were working on rather than the first digit. People are fearful about the aftershocks. Can you shed some light on them and give us information about what you guys expect to see in the next few days . Well, in a typical california type aftershock sequence, which is what we appear to be having, we have, you know, these on the order of several hundred aftershocks in the first week. They will be occurring less frequently. The bad news, they dont necessarily always decrease in size. There is still 50 chance of having a magnitude 5 in the first week. That probably will be stable, and so the good news is most of these arent wont be felt. Theyre small enough that they wont cause additional damage. You could have further damage, and to be aware of that and take precautions. Thank you so were. Again, the message here at usgs is to take precallings because more earthquakes could be expected here in the next few days. Reporting live, im michelle roberts. Back to you in the studio. Hey, michelle, can you ask a question for me or ask the geologist that is there. You know, in recent days weve heard reports where the drought that weve been experiencing actually caused the earths surface to rise as those water levels were dropping. Here in california could there be any correlation at all . Brad, were getting a question in from the studio. Theyre asking about the drought and if there is a possibility that that could be affecting these earthquakes that weve seen. Snoo so this earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, or six miles, and so that is well below sort of the water table area that we would expect significant changes. If you are pumping from deep wells, that could create that, but whats occurring at a depth of six miles is little affected by what we have at the surface. Stroo still more studies, i would imagine, to be done for future earthquakes. Exactly. Our instruments are sensitive. They can pick up sort of changes in the level much the Ground Surface based on withdrawing water from water wells, and so as we acquire more information, we will go back and look and see, you know, was there a water level change or change on the surface related to this event, but its un we know the faults within the bay area are already highly stressed, so its want surprising that we had a magnitude 6 earthquake today. Do you have any other questions at this point in the day . No. We appreciate michelle continuing to gather information. I know you have been there since quite early this morning. Well leave you there, and it there are any changes, well continue to check back with you. Thank you so much. Michelle roberts from the peninsula of the usgs headquarters. It has been upgrade from a 6. 0 to a 6. 1. Some of the most dramatic and telling video that weve seen, this is a live picture now from meadowbrook lane or meadowbrook drive in napa. The pictures say it all. In fact, the kids are having fun with this, but this is a street that just is bubbling, as are several streets in that area. A live picture here. The kids are using it as a skateboard ramp right now. That should tell you the tone. There are no major injuries that have been reported. There are two major injuries, but no fatalities reported. The tone of this is everyone just kind of is assessing the damage, and there is plenty of damage to downtown napa. That street right there, the street, meadowbrook drive in napa. The streets literally just crumpling up. What we saw earlier this morning, the Mobile Home Park that went up in flames. Now, a couple of transportation issues we should tell you about before we get to the next reporter. The wine train in napa, always so popular, on of day of the week, but especially now on the weekend, going into harvest season, the wine train in napa has been canceled, so if you are going out there, keep note, obviously. The ace train, which is the pacific ace traim train from the Central Valley into levi stadium, and we have a 49er game today, and, yes, the game is in santa clara, but the ace train from the Central Valley coming into the bay area, that has been canceled. No longer in service. The question is why . Its just the track. They dont want to take any risk right now for the wine train in napa or the ace train of any of the tracks being disjointed wrush see the roads being disjointed here, so the fear is that some of those Railroad Tracks are disjointed, so they are cancelling they need to check them. Most definitely. As pg e, they are checking sites as well. We had roads completely buckle. Look how high they have. They have precautions in many areas as well. I just got word that cal train as well, they are experiencing some delays as well. Its a precautionary thing. Its something they always do. Check all the lines, the railways after an earthquake of this significant size. As we continue to take a look at all the damage that weve seen from local businesses as well with sprinklers that automatically went off, damaging the contents inside the store. The good news is that only two major injuries so far. We dont know the extent of those injuries. No deaths reported at all. Lots of, you know, cuts and bruises and things like that from things toppling on you, but because it happened at 3 20 in the morning, many people were at home. They were asleep. That includes people that were inside a Mobile Home Park in the napa area. It burst into flames. Reporter bob riddell is live on the scene there with a look at the aftermath. Bob. At least two fires in the napa valley Mobile Home Park. If you are not familiar, this is near just off 29 here. The intersection was sal have door. Two fires started by natural gas line. One fire contained to one mobile home. That mobile home destroyed. A much larger fire contained to several mobile homes. It destroyed three homes and damaged six to eight more. Now, aid crinkle into all of this, you noticed into the park is the water main that was ruptured in the street. The service line to this park, there was no pressure because it was bubbling out front. They were aware of this. The first order was to basically just get everyone evacuated. They only had 300 gallons of water in their fire truck, which is the equivalent of a dixie cup when it comes to fighting a fire. That was not as much help. What they had to do is call for mutual aid from the county. The county sent in two water vendors with a total of 6,000 gallons of water combining that with they were able to keep the fires contained. Again, to the three homes that were destroyed. Another six to eight damaged. Their fear was, though, this is a large block here. This could have easily spread to another six to eight homes. You could have seen a lot more damage. Fortunately, there was no wind, and that was the x factor. The fact that there was no wind tonight gave them at least an opportunity to keep this contained. Its remarkable given the fact that whatever water pressure they would have relied on was nonexistent. There was . Low water pressure, but it wasnt enough to the bottom line is they were hampered by the fact that that water main burst up front. We talked to a man who lived next door where the natural gas fire started. This larger section, you said that the earthquake woke him up, and immediately the fire was ignited. There must have been a pilot light or some sort of source of friction. When that natural gas line broke, it was a blowtorch. We have no reports of fatalities, and apparently no one was hurt in the process. Have you mobile homes that melted even though they didnt get lit by the flames. Its just radiant heat. In the mobile home theres a lot of plastic siding. You have places that have plastic side and Severe Damage inside because of the radiant heat. The mobiling home park are four homes destroyed. Another six to eight damaged. Napa valley city of napa valley fire and the county are still out here within just the past ten minutes. Theyve been spraying more foam on to these homes to try to keep anything from flaring back up. These fires are now extinguished, and you have a lot of residents Walking Around here trying to figure out what their next step is going to be in their lives here. Reporting live here at napa, again ask you one more question while we have you. Were just looking at the helicopter footage of this, and its so incredible to see the damage there. Its remarkable no one was hurt. At least no major injuries, and you say people are Walking Around just wonder whattiing who next with their lives. They have to be thankful their neighbors and themselves werent hurt in a major way. Talking to the one man i mentioned, he described a horrible, horrible experience. The earthquake, which was unnerving enough, but to wake up and then see the house next door immediately in flames and were not talking about a kindling fire. Were talking blowtorchlike flames. Shooting out. Whatever the rupture was in the natural gas line. It was just horrifying. He was so very shaken up when i spoke with him in the past hour. Thats bob riddell reporting live. You see it went up in flames. There are no injuries, which is the best news possible. Thats fantastic news. With something happening so quickly like that, even in the middle of night for people to have the wherewithal to be able to jump out and get out of the face of those flames as well. The thing is that theyre having to deal with so many gas lines that actually ruptured there. At least 50 in that area. Water main breaks as well reported after this 6. 1 earthquake in napa county. It was very close to American Canyon as well, where it was centered, and thats where Jody Hernandez joins us live. Shes been out there gathering information for us. How does it look now, jody . Ill tell you, it looks a mess out here. Were at jones drive, and ill tell you, there are lots and lots of houses with damage, including this one here. Bricks all around. Inside the house they have quite a bit of damage as well. Theyve been able to clean that up. Thats actually the homeowner here jacob roush. If can you come over here, jacob, and describe what this was like. That was silent shaking. Animals got really scared, and things was flying out of the cabinets, and dishes breaking everywhere. Lasted for about 15 to 20 seconds i would say. When they came outside and saw this, tell me what you thought . I was just totally shocked. It was just amazing. You know, i heard a loud noise and everything, but i didnt realize that our chimney had fell over. It was in the street actually, part of it. Wow. This isnt the only house that has chimney damage. Im going to ask alan just to pan on over across the street. You can see this home here. The chimney is about to tumble over. These folks are with away on a camping trip, and their kids came home to survey the damage. The cousin kitchen is a mess, i. The mantle is tipped over. They dont want us to step inside. Were going to walk over down the street here too. This house across the street, there was a man up on the roof just a few minutes ago trying to fix the chimney. Its got quite a bit of damage as well. If we look over here on the side of jacob roushs house, you can see the crack in the house. Some foundation damage. Not good. And then were going to pan over one more to this neighboring house here. The chimney down here. The chimney when it fell made a hole through the roof. So im told inside the house if you can look up and see a hole, they also had huge damage inside. Dishes. Can i get somebody to come over here and kind of describe what this was here . Whats your name . Stacy. Describe the damage inside. Inside . Inside his house. Oh, thats his house. What about your house . My house is just right there in front, and, you know, outside the chimney is gone. Okay. All right. You must be jacobs wife. Well, come over here and talk to you. Sir, what is your damage . My name is matt, and the damage so far is a chimney, our roof caved in. We have a couple of pressure cracks in the house. Other than that glass everywhere broken, cracks in the foundation. Its bad. What do you think of this . Its horrible. For Something Like that to happen in American Canyon that hasnt happened in years, its, excuse me language a little [ bleep ] up. Thats not good. Oh, anyway, so this street, again, tons of damage. Weve got at least a half a dozen homes with chimney damage, and it is just a mess. People here are rattled. Very, very scary. The gentleman, again, who lived here said they didnt know quite what to do. Were going to come back over here and take a look at all the bricks down here. People have been, you know, up and down the street surveying the damage, wanting to see what their neighbors house looks like. Describing similar scenes all around here. Were going to get a chance to drive around a bit, but, again, here on jones drive and american drive, quite a bit of damage. Chimneys seem to be the most of it. Reporting live in American Canyon, im Jody Hernandez, back to you. All right, jody. Thank you. Significant damage there. A lot of neighborhoods seeing significant damage. Downtown napa, of course, the brunt of it. American canyon, that was the epicenter. North of napa and vallejo was the major part of it. People felt throughout the bay area, sacramento, and into the sierra. You can really feel our most Significant Impact weve had in 25 years since 1989. The 6. 9 loma prieta. This is the 6. 1. We dont know the extent of those injuries. They were treated at a local hospital. People xlak of cuts and lacerations, where not many people were injured. It happened at 3 20 this morning. Centered there in American Canyon area. Were seeing the assessment of the damage now. Exteriors of buildings that completely buckled ask came down. Mobile home park caught on fire after a gas line explosion. This is whats left. Firefighters had to just let it quell out there. Four mobile homes completely destroyed. Six to eight damaged. The good news is that everyone escaped injuries there. We are seeing a lot of the damage in the downtown napa area. If you are familiar with that area, it is lined with so many Historic Buildings. Bricks just falling from those buildings. This is the exterior of some of the buildings right there on the corner near third street down there. But, you know, the interiors of these buildings as well, the Justice Department that they worked at, the Historic Building that they have just looks like pieces of them just completely ripped out. Yeah. Its a functioning downtown. You have the historic but also everyone works here. Downtown napa, the post office, heavy damage to the post office. Thankfully this is a 3 20 in the morning where it happened, so no one is inside. The historic napa courthouse built in the 1870s. Significant damage. The judges and the lawyers and everyone that works in that building, its not going to be a building to work in for the foreseeable future. Major damage there
