Here at the scene. They were called out earlier this morning, by a man who drives a truck, out of one of these warehouses, who saw the man on the ground, unconscious, and not breathing. When medical personnel arrived, they declared him dead on the scene. We dont know whether this man is affiliated with that red semitruck that you can see in the video, but he was nearby. Now, this is a commercial area, a place where warehouses are, where trucks come and go all day long, but, still, there are no witnesses so far, and nothing in the Surveillance Video to give any indication of to what happened to the police. The police right now asking people to come forward with any information, if they saw anything, at 8 00 this morning, when that man was found, or in the hours leading up to it. Because at this point, they dont know when this homicide took place. Heres officer Albert Morales with the San Jose Police. Right now, we have nothing. Nothing on the camera that we can put out right now. Theyre reviewing that information. Theres nobody that weve contacted or nobody thats come forward, either a Family Member or anything like that. But again, maybe its too soon. They probably dont know the person is missing. All of that information will come as part of the investigation and when were able to go ahead and get his identification. Now, we did talk with officer morales. He says its too soon to say exactly how the man died. Too soon to say whether he was shot or stabbed, but he did have injuries consistent with Something Like a beating. We asked him if some of the early reports that the man was found bound on the ground, perhaps with twine or rope or zip ties, and he said its too early to say that homicide investigators will not be releasing that information right away. We also talked with the owner of a business here in this shopping area, rather, in this warehouse area, and asked her if perhaps robbery could have been a motive, if any of her drivers had been held up in the past. And she said, no, this is a very safe area for folks to park their vehicles and even sometimes take a nap as they are in between deliveries. Shes concerned that perhaps it is somebody who worked for her or who once worked for her. So shes waiting to hear more details about that, as we are as well. Right now, what we can tell you is that the man appears to be an asian man in his 40s. And right now, we dont know what his identity is, what his name is, and certainly we know that his next of kin has not been notified. San jose police urging anyone who might have seen anything here in the area on monterey road and curtner near the plant, if you live in san jose, you might know the rock n jump trampoline park, its right behind that, and there are lots of warehouses. So if you know anything, San Jose Police asking you to come forward. And give them some ability to solve this crime and make sure the family of this man has the answers they need. Reporting live, kris sanchez, nbc bay area. Kris, thank you very much. And kris will have much more at 5 00 and 6 00 tonight. All right, the local story Getting National attention, it turns out the teenage stowaway who hitched a flight to hawaii wanted to go to africa. Bob, he got on Hawaiians Airlines plane. It is certainly not going to africa. Reporter maui police say, scott, that this 15yearold boy hopped a fence here seeking a new life, trying to hitch a ride to africa to be with his mother. Apparently not realizing that the plane that he was stowing upon was bound for a much different part of the world. The boy, according to police, was trying to escape his unhappy home life in the south bay, upset that his house in santa clara, where he lives with his father, stepmom, and other children had become too crowded. He argued with his dad over it and then ran away, with the intent of trying to get to his mom who lives in africa. He climbs into the wheel well of this Hawaiian Airlines 767, raising the question of how can it be that easy to bypass Airport Security . Despite this, no system is 100 . And it is possible to scale an airport perimeter fence line, especially under cover of darkness, and remain undetected, and it appears that thats what this teenager did. He just jumped over the fence, walked over, and got in the wheel well. So should it be that easy . That sounds like a simple question . Well, thats a rhetorical question. Hell, no it shouldnt be easy at all. Reporter Police Believe he misunderstood the writing on the side of hawaiian flight 45, thinkinged t thinking it would get him to africa, not maui. Miraculous, he survived the 5 1 2hour journey at a High Altitude with little oxygen and temperatures well below zero. The teen says he passed out and doesnt remember the flight. He was probably unconscious for most of the flight. You know, once he got up that high and that cold, he probably went into a state of suspended animation, which probably helped him in survival, ultimately. According to one aviation expert, it is possible for a person to fit, barely, though, into one of those wheel wells without being crushed by the landing gear. Theres also a thought that the tires heated up from takeoff might have kept him warm. The boy was found wandering the tower mac in maui, disoriented, having trouble hearing. Hes in a hawaii hospital. Not clear when hell be brought back here to san jose. Reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, nbc bay area news. Bob, thank you much. Now, east bay congressman eric swawell is calling for a review of Airport Security after this latest breach. Swawell, a member of the Homeland Security committee, says the committees been asking for an indepth review of Airport Security for years. Certainly do stay with us for continuing conch of the stowaway story. You can go to our website as well, nbcbayarea. Com to get more details. You can just search, stowaway. Well, we have new details on what led to that ferry disaster in south korea. This as the number of confirmed dead has risen above 100 and there are still nearly 200 people missing. Nbcs bill neely has more on the efforts to determine what caused the disaster. Reporter the pace of the investigation here is quickening with more crewmen being detained, but there are still so many questions to be answered. And the pace of the recovery of the dead have quickened, too. By night, by day, every day, the search goes on. The number of bodies recovered exceeding 100 for the first time. But investigators are still in the dark about why, exactly, this disaster happened. Nine of the ships crew have now either been arrested or charged. One has tried to kill himself. Investigators now say the first emergency call was made not by the crew, but within minutes, by a very frightened boy on board, saying, save us, were sinking. The focus is shifting from the captain, who had ultimate responsibility, to the mistakes of several crew in the first crucial minutes. At 8 48, the ship is suddenly steered right. It loses balance, tilting. Seven minutes later, the first distress call. Please come quickly. But the ship is listing fast. The crew tell passengers to stay inside. Minutes later, more distress calls. Were about to sink. Hundreds still trapped. A disaster in just two hours. U. S. Navy helicopters and underwater cameras are now helping hundreds of divers search very murky waters. No debris from the ship, nothing has come up from the surface. The only thing you can see is this oil slick, clearly from the ferry. This officer buried today died in the rescue. Most of the ships crew survived. Most of the passengers, like 17yearold yang onyu did not. And that has outraged this country. Even the president calling the actions of the captain and some of the crew like murder. We are expecting more of the crew to be charged here soon. Back to you. Bill, thank you. A routine traffic stop turned into a call for the bomb squad in San Francisco overnight. A driver was pulled over last night around 10 00, in the presidio. Park police say the 46yearold man told officers he had fireworks in the cab of his pickup truck. Officers say he even handed them a large explosive during the traffic stop, so they called in the bomb squad to detonate those explosives. It happened on mason street. Several businesses were evacuated as a precaution. Officers then went to the suspects home in the russian hill neighborhood. Investigators walked out with several bags of what appear to be evidence and they do plan to file charges, they say, based on what they found. Thats all the detail we have for now, but officers do say there is no further threat to the public. Our state commission could decide today whether to save san joses iconic domed theater.
