Inside that is now lost. We dont know hopefully the dog was able to make it out, but firefighters are doing their very best. So far, two homes are engulfed in flames, and were told that it is contained to two blames, so its not spreading any further. Just a short time ago, we saw a man on the roof of a neighboring home with a hose, trying to stop this fire from spread to his home. We just talked to him a short time ago. He says that Police Officers said he would be arrested if he didnt get off the roof. He didnt listen to that, stayed there until he thought his safety was in danger. There are many neighbors around here watching these two homes the burn. The Fire Department did say that the fire began, what appeared to be, between two homes. At this time, they dont know why that happened or what exactly started it. Of course, right now, the main focus is putting this out. At this point, you can see water is being sprayed on to the two homes there. And so far, again, it is contained to the two homes, but the smoke is extremely intense. And this has been burning since about 9 25 here in sunnyvale on lantana drive. And at this point, we dont know many details, but the good news is that everyone did get out safely. Were still waiting to hopefully see that dog, but everyone is doing okay this morning. Well have much more coming up later today. Reporting live in sunnyvale, im Michelle Roberts, nbc bay area news. Michelle, since youve. On seen, have you seen a zpa dissipation of that smoke, or is it about the same it was 30 minutes ago . Reporter it is improving, when i first got here, i could see it from miles away. It does look like some of the flames have been cut down a bit. And firefighters started fighting the fire from inside the home, and that got too dangerous, because part of the roof actually did collapse. And right now its even tough to see if there is still a roof left. So they are now fighting it from outside on the street. Last question for you, michelle. It will be a while before the Fire Department says what the origin of the fire was and why it started, but you were talking to some folks earlier who speculated that it started in one of those homes, in a remodeled kitchen. Reporter yeah. One of the neighbors said that her home, her kitchen was just recently remodeled, and it appeared that it started in that general vicinity, but were being told by officials that maybe it was outside. So were not exactly sure the exact area, but it could have started near a kitchen. At this point, though, the cause of this fire is unknown. All right. Thank you very much, Michelle Roberts, reporting live from sunnyvale. By the way, welcome to the team. Nice job there, michelle. Youre looking at another live shot from our chopper, as firefighters continue to try to douse out those flames. The smoke, as michelle just mentioned, a second ago, still very thick, although the flames do seem to be absent at this point. Lets throw it over now to christina, whos going to explain what role the wind played in all of this or did not play in part of that fire. Its kind of one of those things where the wind played a good and bad role. I want to start with this picture. As you can see, the overall urgency of this situation, definitely winding down. This is a picture that michelle tweeted out. About 15 minutes ago, about 20 minutes to go, to be more accurate. And you can see they had fire crews working hard. We had a picture of that gentleman, the neighbor there with that hose, trying to knock out that fire. He was definitely asked get down. And we take you out wide once again from our chopper shot. And you can actually see just how transparent that thick, black smoke plume that once was here, has welcome. And i the yellcan tell you, thed help out the situation. The one problem because of the wind, all that smoke is going straight up to the atmosphere. If you live in sunnyvale, you want to close the windows in your home if youre going to be traveling through the area. Make sure that air is recycling in your car and the temperature is creeping up. Were at 80 degrees. Its a good thing our local heroes were able to get out there so fast and get that thing under control. Right now, back to you, sam and chris. Thank you very much. We take you back live from our chopper shot. You can see some of that smoke starting to make its way out of the areas. The crews are still dousing the flames down. There are still some smoldering pots. Well go live to nbc bay areas Damian Trujillo, who talked with that neighbor who was up on that rooftop, trying to save his home, but being ordered down we police on penalty of arrest, damian. Reporter he was. In fact, hes right here. Joseph miranda was the gentleman on the roof. You said you were freaked out. I was freaked out because my neighbors house was on fire. It started look it was starting to spread towards my house. I could see the heat coming towards my house. I started watering it down, the cops said if i stayed up there, with they would arrest me for watering my own house down. I said, i didnt care. I could feel the house. I didnt know what else to do, i own the house outright. Reporter was it instinctual . Very. I got up there so fast. Reporter even with the threat of arrest . I had to do something for my house and protect my property. Thank you so much, here on nbc bay area. Theres also a Tree Trimming Company that was out here on the street at the time this fire erupted. Were told one of the workers of the Tree Trimming Company started to becoming on doors, alerting everybody, people with children to get out of the neighboring homes because one home was ton fire. We did talk to him and well hear from him later on this morning. Im Damian Trujillo, nbc bay area. Thank you very much, damian. Certainly puts in perspective how strong those Fire Department home roses are. You cant really tell the scale, but once you saw that man on his rooftop using a garden hose, its clear why you have to let the firefighters do their job. Much more effective. And to this point, were not aware of any injuries. Firefighters from sunnyvale do appear to have control now of that flame and that blaze. That could have endangered many of the homes in the area. One man jumping on to his rooftop with a hose. An interesting perspective there. Well continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates throughout the newscast and online at nbcbayarea. Com.
