Keeping the streets of san jose safe is a job that according to some san jose pd officers is a job getting exponentially harder. They say the number of officers resigning and retiring continues to go up as the number of people who want the job continues to spiral down. Live at San Jose Police headquarters with more on what happened today, and why that concern is growing. Steph . Reporter yeah, good morning to you, chris. Youve got a city thats growing in population yearoveryear. And a police force that continues to shrink here at the Police Department. You see the sign that is hanging, now hiring. That starts with the new academy. The second of two this year is set to begin tomorrow. A full academy has 60 spots, 30 people were offered jobs, and set to be sworn in friday, last friday to be city employees. But five ended up accepting jobs at Different Police departments and one was a no show. Now, there is set to be an Academy Class graduating next month, but that number has gone down to around 20. Numbers from both the pd and the police union which match up accurately showing there are 900 active fullduty sworn officers ready to hit the streets. But that number used to hover in the 1,300 to 1,400 range. The Association President says this means fewer cops on the street, less visibility and slower response time. Even our own chief seems to be avoiding the issue. They dont want to talk about bad news. This is bad news and the public needs to know about it. It affects their safety and our ability to make them safe. What were facing right now is a competitive disadvantage. We are in a competition with other agencies who offer better salaries, better benefits. Things like that. Thats no surprise. Weve seen that, and thats caused qualified candidates to seek employment elsewhere. Officer morales referring to measure b, the ballot measure overwhelmingly approved by voters that cut tension benefits for Public Safety employees. Morales adding that the competitive disadvantage compared to other Police Departments has caused officers to leave. 60 resignations and 36 retirements with more set to go into effect in january. So you see the numbers really not on the Police Departments side. Inevitably, politics is part of this conversation as we are three weeks away from the mayoral elections. But that aside, what youre hearing from this Police Department is that it continues to shrink and all it can do is continue to hire quality people to join this force. Live from San Jose Police headquarters, nbc bay area news. Kind of surprising they wouldnt just show up, though. Thanks, steph. Well, a caution for anybody going to the beach today. Do watch out for big waves and strong current. A warning comes after two fishermen were swept out to sea in the north bay. This happened yesterday afternoon in high surf at rodeo beach in the marin headlands. The men were fishing off a rock, a wave comes in, knocks them into the ocean. The coast guard responded along with several other agencies. Now, one manmade it back to the rock and was rescued. The other pulled from the water, but he did not survive. Conditions very rough with high surf warnings in effect. One of the things that people should always be prepared for at this time of year is that sneaker waves are much more common starting now all the way through the winter. A sneaker wave is a much larger wave than any that you see in a series of 10, 20, 30 waves. Now, the surviving fisherman is listed in Good Condition this morning. Expect that as well as the flow coming off the bay bridge, considerable and getting to the bay bridge and the evening commute will be more that will be all week disrupting. And the bay area looks light. But during oracle open where we had a similar closure, we had big backups. Right now, the bay bridge toll plaza itself showing no problems, just these folks off to the right approach having to wait for somebody, waiting to pay the cash toll. Back to you. Digging through the purses. Thank you very much, mike. While putting their differences aside, why two political rivals are hitting the road together in san jose. Plus, San Francisco connects b. A. R. Well, this morning, some other heavy weights are rolling in to the bay area for a shot at smashing a world record. Yeah, were talking about pumpkins that weigh nearly a ton. Bob redell live in Half Moon Bay with a look good morning, pumpkin. Reporter he just put a bad end to my segment. We did not set a world record at Half Moon Bay, but a state record and a north american record. And youre looking at it right there. Theres the weight. We broke the ton mark, 2,058 pounds. Compare to that last years winner. Weve crossed that milestone and this is the man here to do it. John, this is your winning entry. Congratulations. Thank you very much. When we spoke earlier this morning before it was put on the scale. Did you think it was going to be 1,800, 1,900 . Are you surprised . Yes, i am. Whats your reaction. We never thought it would go like this. What did you do . Especially during a drought to get a pumpkin this big . I dont know. I found a i found that they seem to be happy with the water i was giving them. So i just kept it constant. I didnt overfeed it. I was going to take what i got. When you say the water. I found a mix . Just i had an overhead misting system. And i found something they seemed to like. So i kept it like that the rest of the day or the week or the year. Youll take the seeds out eventually . Yeah. Are there stud fees attached to these seeds . Well see. Id like to do what the past winners have done and we give them away for the serious growers will all get seeds. Okay. Yeah. All right. Youre in shock. You werent expecting this. No. I came here without a pumpkin last year. This is way cool. Youve got 6 a pound. Just over 12,000, plus they threw in an extra 1,000. Youre walking away with 13,000, whats your plan . I dont have plans. You know. Ive got a chimney to fix from the earthquake. Oh, really . Yeah. This is meant to be. God gave us these. The name up there missing is russ pew, his pumpkin weighed in at 1,828, unfortunately had a leak underneath it and realized it right before they put it on the scale. That disqualified them. And a few years ago, same thing with russ. He had a soft spot he discovered. And that dqed him. This year being significant since they did break the ton mark and set a new north american record, which was actually set this weekend in san martin at 2,036 pounds. And theyre beating it by 22 pounds today. Bob, you said a couple of years ago. How long do you think youve been doing this . I can remember you doing this forever. Yeah. Since 2000. And in 2000, they were at the 1,000 pound mark. And, you know, it seemed like for a while, they were going up 100 pounds a year, and the past few years, its been stagnant. For whatever reason. Here we are, another jump. Not a huge one, but one that will cross that threshold. Fair enough. Bob redell. Thank you very much. Doing this 14 years, knows the statistics. Well, its one of the Coolest Stories he does. And we saw sunshine at halfmoon bay. Clouds and fog, sometimes San Francisco socked in with clouds and fog.
