Chuck hagel struggled, not so much at the pentagon, but the white house. Though praised today by president obama. When its mattered most, behind closed doors in the oval office, youve always given it to me straight. And for that, i will always be grateful. Administration sources say the former republican senator from nebraska who is a decorated enlisted soldier in vietnam did not impress in Multi Agency Meetings on national security. And hagel irritated obama insiders by writing a memo to one of them. Susan rice charging the president had not articulated a Clear Strategy on syria. Isis on the rise in syria and in iraq was a hagel challenge. Hes agreed to stay until a successor is confirmed. I will continue to support you, mr. President , and the men and women who defend this country every day. Potential obama picks to replace him at the pentagon include former undersecretary michelle flornot, and Ashton Carter and jack reid. To manage along with fighting isis, more u. S. Combat in afghanistan. Quietly okayed by president obama. Talk about combat, whoever president obama names to be the next defense secretary is sure to have a tough time in the confirmation process from hagels more powerful former Republican Senate colleagues. Nbc news, capitol hill. Thank you, steve. Happening today, uc students at a number of campuses across the state planning a mass walkout. This will happen in less than an hour. Theyre angry over the tuition increase approved by the board of regents last week. Protesters at the Berkeley Campus have been occupying wheeler hall. Say theyre not going to leave until regents withdraw the fee increase and thats not likely to happen. Its really symbolic, you know, the structures that teach us to address issues in our world are not doing what theyre supposed to. And were doing whats necessary to care for one another. Could raise tuition by 5 every year for the next five years. Lockdown lifted, an upscale south bay neighborhood is open this morning after several hours of lockdown. Investigators were looking for a possibly armed Home Invasion suspect. Nbc bay areas bob redell has been on the story since it began. And, bob, has anything changed . Unfortunately, no, kris. One man was commenting to us how unbelievable it is to him what happened to his neighbors here in garden gate and glenco. Fortunately, deputies have no reason to believe this is more than an isolated incident. The Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office still looking for the two men who invaded this home and ended up robbing the people inside. At one point several blocks of this neighborhood here in cupertino on lockdown with their guns drawn in case they did have the suspects trapped within the perimeter. But after two hours of a yard to yard search with a canine, Law Enforcement realized these men had gotten away before they had even arrived. This happened around 5 00 this morning, two masked men, one armed with a gun, strong armed their way into the home. The first 911 call came from someone upstairs who reported yelling and a commotion downstairs. Then five minutes later, a second 911 call from the victim themselves reporting that they had just been robbed. Robbed of what, the s. O. Wont say. We believe the victims were a mother and father who live here who investigators did interview for quite some time afterwards. Upstairs, we believe there were two younger people possibly their children who appeared to us be in their teens or early 20s. None of the family was hurt, shaken up, yes, but physically okay as Law Enforcement tries to figure out why these criminals pick their home. I dont have any information to indicate why it would be obvious, but obviously one of the questions we want to answer. Because theres not a lot of Home Invasion crimes or robberies. So why were they targeted out of all the residents over here . Thats one of the questions. The victims described their assailants as two black men, one was 57, the other 62, both wearing white masks, black hoodies and black pants. And again, as the Sheriffs Office told us, they do believe they got away. Reporting live here in cupertino, nbc bay area news. Hopefully a more specific description at some point. Thanks, bob. Well, a close call for a Santa Clara County sheriffs deputy this morning. The deputy experienced serious injury when his motorcycle tangled with a pickup truck. It happened at interstate 280 in cupertino. The deputy treated at the scene, seen up and walking around. Its unclear what exactly caused the crash. Now to a bay area followup. A window washer who fell 11 stories remains in life threatening condition in San Francisco this morning. That man was getting ready to hoist some scaffolding on friday when he fell from the top of the building in the financial district. A moving car searching for a parking spot broke his fall. Cal osha is investigating the incident. A Security Breach at san jose airport over the weekend. The third time Something Like this has happened at the airport this year. Police say 39yearold miguel made it on to the tarmac early yesterday morning near atlantic aviation, on the coleman avenue side of the airport, not far from 880. Tried to detain him, tried to call police, but he got away. Witnesses say he stole a city maintenance truck and drove to the other end of the airport where he was arrested near terminal b. Its a guy can come in and steal a maintenance vehicle, who knows what else they can do, bringing in weapons and what not. That could be scary. Makes you wonder about the security, you know, where the security and how can someone get that far on the onramp. Authorities say there was never any threat to passengers. As we mentioned, this is the third Security Breach at sjc this year. In august, the serial stow away was able to sneak past without a ticket. She boarded a flight to los angeles and arrested upon landing. Hartman was also arrested later that month when she was spotted at Sky Harbor Airport in phoenix. And before that, back in april, a 15yearold boy managed to scale a security fence and climb into the wheel well of a passenger jet and then survive a flight to hawaii. Bay area congressman has called for added security measures, including hightech tools to keep passengers safe. And now to a developing story that a lot of folks are going to be talking about today. So far, neither the giants or red sox are confirming a report that some San Francisco fans are no doubt dreading. A few media reports that Pablo Sandoval has signed a fiveyear deal with boston. Live in San Francisco. And what have you been able to find out . And how many of those fans walking behind you are crying . Reporter yeah, a lot of them, kris. Good morning to you. You know, i was here outside at t park an hour ago when the Team President and ceo walked out of these gates. He ran over to a waiting cab. He was on his phone. He got in, ran over there, he rolled down the window, i asked for a comment. He shook his head and took off. But the giants official comment to us is that there is none and only they have not heard anything definitive from his agent. I was here speaking with fans outside the Giants Dugout store who said they would be absolutely devastated if sandoval left the giants for the reported 100 million offer by the red sox by the boston red sox. One of the most devastated is a young fan from san diego and another who is a native of los angeles. And hes really good at third base. A really good third baseman. What was your reaction when you heard the news . Can you give us an example . What . I dont even like the giants anymore. Now youre ditching the giants . No, i still like them. But but its going to be tough if he goes, right . Okay. I was devastated. Hes come up big the last two world series. In the postseason, hes been big for us. Its terrible. Do you feel hes worth 100 million . I think so. Yeah. The deal . Yeah. I think its well worth it. Especially when it comes to the postseason. We also spoke with the giants analyst who knows the giants family so well and he says theres always risk when a player goes into free agency, but he says hed be surprised if the offers were the same and sandoval chose to leave. Lets assume that both offers were equal and i think thats a good assumption. I would be surprised if he left a place hes been for 11 years and so beloved. I dont think hell ever be received in any city, not even one as great as boston as well as hes been received here in San Francisco. So in that regard, it doesnt surprise me. And acknowledging that sandovals a power hitter who hasnt hit in a socalled hitters ballpark and that might be a motivation. Another might be that sandoval trying to get closer to his family on the east coast and be in the same time zone. Adding hes disgusted with the front office since the negotiations have been underway. And he characterizes the offers as aggressive and spirited. Once again, sandoval signing a deal is unconfirmed so far. Certainly something that giants fans here holding on to hope for that its not something to be certain later today. So theyre hoping that he, of course, will stay and retire as a San Francisco giant. For now, live outside at t park, nbc bay area news. Thats a weird thing to stay in a place where you started these days. Not like when our dads are watching football. Who knows what will happen. Thanks, steph. Well, south bay charity putting the happy in holidays. How many people showed up at sacred heart and how many they were able to help. Not all the rainfall goes into our watershed, youve got about a 2,500 foot elevation on the top of mt. Ham.
