Metering lights on highway 85. He tells us he has noticed a big difference in the morning commute. We have seen times where traffic is moving relatively well. Were at the end of the commute, but this is only one day. Cant tell if this is an unusually light wednesday or if the metering lights helped. Drivers we spoke with were glad to hear tt caltrans is doing something 250 try to alleviate what is normally a traffic nightmare. Thank goodness. Youre happy . Yeah. Its a mess trying to get up on 85. Its just always backed up and people trying to get over at the last minute. Just a big pain in the butt. Caltrans unconjunction with the metropolitan Transportation Commission and valley transportation authorities spent 13 million to install 15 metering lights twoong cupertino and Mountain View. Seven on the southbound onramps and eight on the northbound onramps for the morning commute. Were at one right now. The metering lights are supposed to turn on at 6 00 every morning. This morning, wasnt until around 6 20 6 30. Theyre supposed to turn off at 11 00. Thats an hour or two later than metering light locations throughout the rest of the bay area. Usually theyre 6 00 to 9 00 6 00 to 10 00. Here its 6 00 to 11 00. Caltrans said the extended hours are warranted because the rush hour traffic is so bad along this stretch of 85. A lot worse. Six months ago, better than it is now. Youre happy to see the metering lights. Im happy theyre doing something. Hopefully, the traffic engineers got a good education and they know what theyre doing. Those engineers should know for sure in a couple of weeks. Whether their work was justified here. This will be after they collect and analyze the traffic data to see if the drive times have improved for workers trying to get to their jobs here in silicon valley. And more metering lights are on the way for the south bay. Wont be until the summer time theyll be installing metering lights along 101 between south san jose and gilroy another main artery for people trying to get to their jobs. Reporting live here in Mountain View bob redell. So the afternoon metering lights went on last week. The same thing stands to reason its going to be a couple weeks before we know theyre working, right . Right. Thats what caltrans is saying. Theyre saying have some patience with us. Give us a couple weeks to get into our groove with this so we can make tweaks if necessary. All right. Thank you very much bob. You may have noticed over bobs shoulder they just went to full green. Were racing. Lets check in with mike as well. Good morning, mike. Well see how green the area is as far as our sensors. Bob is up here in Mountain View around el camino. Thats the onramp i recognized. Thats just north of where most of the slowing continues here from cooper teeno up into the area. This is current with our live sensors. The red and orange means speeds in the 20s and 30s. The green getting close to the 50s. We have a crash its not affecting the flow or report. Lets show you at 9 00 when things started to get slow. Were showing a slower drive starting to develop, but all these folks coming from 280 and 85, compressing to sunnyvale, Mountain View. A slow drive, 9 15 a google link in yahoo, all have offices in this area. 9 30, more compression and more slowing. The red coming into sunnyvale spreads up to 237 at about 9 25 well start to see 237 eastbound slowing more slowing. As the morning continues, many of the places you talked about have the metering lights turning off at about 10 00. Thats where were seeing slowing for highway 85. Thats why those will continue on, 10 15, more slowing through the area. Still continueing for north 85 although 280 and 85 itself coming into the area a little lighter traffic. 10 30, the last burst of traffic really kicking in coming into the area. Whatever the case we have seen this continue on to 10 45 we have a slowdown continuing up and thats why they have the metering lights lasting until 11 00 instead of until 9 00 or 10 00. Our live sensors show its a little slower traffic, but as bob showed you, farther nort from 237 in Mountain View everything is clear, and the commuters sound very happy. Well track this and see how things adjust. So far, the results are okay this morning. Back to you. Lert. Lets stick to the roads. South Bay Transportation leaders getting food getting feedback on turning carpool lanes into express lanes. They have issued a preliminary report on the plan to widen 101 and add dual high occupancy toll lanes in both directions. Those changes would impact the corridor, and it would allow solo drivers who are willing to pay to use those lanes along with standard carpoolers during commute hours. Adding capacity and more people to use the lanes, thats currently underutilized. Not as many carpoolers and its saving people time in the general purpose lanes. Its an overall benefit. The express lanes would be similar to ones in place on the sunol grade. The second of three scheduled meetings takes place tonight in san jose. And a policy change for the Menlo Park Police departments use of body cameras. Stephanie chuang showed us how a deadly shooting changed the rules. Good morning. The language should now be more clear to go along with the body cameras. The city bought 40 of them in 2011 but it wasnt until last year when every officer and sergeant was outfitted with one. The move is set to enhance accountability and transparency but its brought up some similar concerns to when the dashboard cameras came up to be popular in the mid1990s. One officers worried about their privacy. Under the current policy Menlo Park Police officers have to turn on their cameras before every serious and high priority call. The City Council Last Night asked the Police Department to update its policy to clarify the language requiring them to turn on the cameras before every call. Police released new stats that seem to so the benefits of the body cams so far. Last year there were 31 citizen complaints filed against the department. Half were exonerated. Over 22 withdrawn, 6 sustained. But police say overall, they have allowed supervisors to immediately review incidents. The imitous is the november 11th deadly shooting when Police Responded to a burglary. They were forced to open fire after a suspect pulled out a gun and pointed at them. Two officers had the camrays but one had theirs turned on. Primary change for us is getting the officers into the mindset of activating their camera prior to arrival for a call for service. If youre responding to an emergency event, do i want an officer worried about the event or remembering to turn their camera on . The City Council Just approved up grading the bodda cameras this month. Some with a higher rer battery life. Now, add visery committee has to determine how long the department will keep the video. Right now, police want to detain it for at least two and a half years. The c lrxaclu said it should be a matter of weeks, not years.
