Hottest day from the command center which starts now with the meteorologist, how hot is it going to get . Its going to be really hot. Especially for the valleys as our temperatures are already starting to climb, but i want to show you some record High Temperatures. What were forecasting, and what the records are set for today. San rafael, thele forecast is 89, and the record is 99. So we should not set any records here. Looking at napa, were going to be very close and well be watching that thermometer going up, but this record was set back in 1981, and we are also watching some other longstanding records like the one for livermore, the record is 110, that was set back in 1961. So we are already feeling the heat, and we have excessive heat warnings in effect for all of these areas shaded in orange. Thats where the temperatures will be the highest. We have heat advisories for the inner bay, but this does not include San Francisco or the immediate coastline. Looking at where we are right now, this is not the High Temperature, it is 99 degrees in livermore and fairfield. San jose, 88 degrees, and we will continue once again to see those temperatures rising, hitting the triple digits as we go into the next couple of hours. Ill talk more about that and also a look ahead to some lower temperatures for the weekend. Thats coming up in the full microclimate forecast. All right, terry, thank you so much. There is no flex alert issued at this point though today, you just saw kerrys High Temperatures for the day, its supposed to be hotter than tuesday and wednesday. When alerts were in effect. Many are wondering why. Bob riddle is in folsom to find out the answer, bob, whatd you find out . Reporter well good morning, sam. The people who run this secure facility behind me here in folsom tell me that when it comes to flex alerts, they try to be judicious. They know its a lot to ask californians to keep their ac at 78 degrees or higher to conserve energy, but even though today were supposed to see temps in the low 100s, they think theyll have enough electricity to meet demands. Actually, were used to having these hot days and walking right up to the maximum of what our grid can deliver. Reporter operators inside this secure control room have what seems to be a mindboggling task. Every five minutes, they must forecast the energy demands of 30 million californians. And then direct that electricity from the facility on to the 26,000 miles of transmission lines managed by the iso. What we do like air Traffic Controllers tell airplanes when to take off and when to land, we do the same with electrons. We say to the generators, how much theyre going to generate, what transmissions path theyre going to use and how much and for how long. Reporter for every degree change in temperature above, the iso recommends the state consumes another 100 megawatts of energy, thats enough to power 100 homes. Flex alerts reaches consumption by around 500 megawatts. Yesterday, the iso forecasted yes, today is going to be very hot, but there is more electricity available today and demand statewide is actually going to be about 1,000 megawatts less. No need to ask californians to conserve for a third day in a row. The caveat to that is things could change, for instance a wild fire pop up an hour from now under a major transmission line. All the sudden were back into the big squeeze. Reporter therell be a big squeeze later this summer during the Solar Eclipse on august 21st, the iso estimates itll lose roughly 6,000 megawatts of solar power. The trick will be to find the power elsewhere as the moon moves across the state to the sun. Reporting live here in folsom, bob riddle, nbc bay area news. That is an interesting part of the power grid component. So the heat danger though is very real. The Santa Clara County coroner confirmed that two people did die of the heat this week. A third death is under investigation. The family of 87yearold jordan who died on monday say that she was out gardening when she died. Her neighbors say she was always working outside. We were really surprised because shes always out in the morning, waving, you know, kind of sweeping off the path and everything. So sad that she didnt come in. According to to the coroner, 72yearold dennis young of san jose also died because of the heat. Young was homeless and living in his car. Download our nbc bay area app to stay informed about the dangerous heat and the outages that could follow. Well send you alerts and get the latest forecasts right to your smart phone. Breaking news this morning for all of those members of congress hoping the secret reportings of conversations between President Trump and james comey would shed light on their investigation, those hopes are now dashed. The president s own admission this morning, the tapes did not exist afterall. This morning, President Trump taking to twitter to say this, quote, with all the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking of illegal leaking of information, i have no idea whether there are tapes or recordings of my conversations with james comey, but i did not make and do not have any such recordings. Trump, of course, was the person who suggested there were tapes in the first place, also on twitter. The president and his Legal Team Face a deadline of tomorrow to turn over those tapes. The House Intelligence Committee investigating its campaign ties to russia. So finally transparency on that issue, but what about the Senate Health care bill . Senate republicans unveiled their draft this morning and the reaction was swift. The First White House briefing after it was revealed is also closed off from live broadcast so the public cannot hear the white houses take on it. And some protesters outside Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnells office were dragged away by capitol police. Some of them in their wheelchairs. Many of them say were there to say what would happen to them if medicaid is slashed, and indeed the Senate Version makes deep cuts to medicaid which provides health care for about one in five americans, many of them the poor and disabled. As its written, the bill also repeals the individual mandates and gets rid of taxes on the wealthy and ensures that funded obamacare. What the senate plan would deliver is more generous tax credits for people to pay for individual coverage compared to the house plan, and it keeps the popular policy allowing children to stay on their parents plans until they are 26 years old. Senator Mitch Mcconnell hopes that democrats will join republicans in passing that bill. They can choose to keep standing by as their failing law continues to collapse and hurt more americans, but i hope they will join us instead to bring relief to the families who have struggled under obamacare for far too long. This bill will result in higher costs, less care, and millions of americans will lose their health insurance. Particularly through medicaid. Its every bit as bad as the house bill. That is minority leader chuck schumer, a democrat, the Congressional Budget Office score is expected next week. And republicans are really pushing for a vote before the fourth of july break.
