For more on that, lets bring in nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez who joins us from emeryville. Jodi . Reporter raj, there are a lot of folks here in the bay area who have friends and family members either in israel or in the gaza strip. They are very worried by what is happening there. Now, we got a taste today of what folks in that area are going through. As you mentioned, it is a region that is still very much under fire tonight. We caught up with the residents of gaza via skype this afternoon. A woman who has been praying for a ceasefire. But judging by the shelling outside her house, it hadnt taken hold yet. I was feeling relief when i hear about the ceasefire, but now coming through, i think its less of a point oh my god, just a second. Reporter Mona Al Farrah is a project director on the ground in gaza for berkeleybased middle Childrens Alliance, a nonprofit aimed at making life better for palestinian children in the gaza strip. People are huddled together. They put blankets over them. They bring their children to them. Their kids are terrified. Of course there is no school. And theyre frightened. Reporter Barbara Lubin and her staff have been in close contact with friends in gaza, where more than 100 people, many of them children have been killed in the past seven days since israel launched a military campaign in response to rocket attacks from hamas. News of a possible ceasefire has brought hope to both sides. Its better than nothing. Any life saved by a ceasefire is a good thing and a blessing. Reporter rabbi mark blum of oaklands Temple Beth Abraham says his administration has been on pins and needles praying not just for a temporary truce, but a longterm solution. Thats probably the number one emotion that goes through the members of Beth Abrahams mind, concern for the safety of the people they know in israel. Reporter mona says she hasnt been able to leave her house in days. With water and medicine and other essentials in short supply, and bombs dropping down, she is terrified. I want ceasefire. I want peace. I dont feel safe at all at the moment. Reporter again, a scary situation tonight. Now local jews are holding a Communal Service in lafayette to pray for peace later tonight. But most folks are watching this with a sense of helplessness from the bay area. Reporting live from the east bay, im Jodi Hernandez, nbc bay area news. Yeah, certainly a volatile situation over there in the middle east. Thank you, jodi. Neighbors in a San Bernardino neighborhood are shocked after a 21yearold man was arrested, accused of planning a terrorist attack. 21yearold Miguel Santana lived with his parents at a duplex. Fbi agents used sledgehammers to pound down the front door. A former schoolmate described how santana had grown distant in the last few years. A 77page affidavit unsealed today indicates he was one of four Southern California men who bought tickets to mexico last thursday with plans to fly from there to istanbul, turkey. Agents arrested them last friday. The cover story for their trip was that the two of them were going to go work in dubai in the importing and exporting of perfume. They also planned to receive a wedding invitation to pakistan, providing an excuse to travel there. To lower their profile prior to traveling, the men removed inflammatory messages from their social media pages. A resignation and investigations, all because of a single letter. That letter enabled a registered sex offender to volunteer at a Church Festival for kids at a school in san jose. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro has been following the story and joins us live from the st. Francis Cabrini School with the developments. Reporter the pastor here at st. Francis Cabrini Church has resigned. We now mow more about the letter from the diocese of san jose that enabled a registered sex offender to volunteer here near kids. This is the letter signed by Human Resources employee at the diocese of san jose that authorized mark gurries, a registered sex offender to volunteer at st. Francis cabrini and parish. And thats what he did that parents say hundreds of kids attended. They blame the letter that allowed him to volunteer. Its a statute that we do not agree with. What you have is a registered sex offender that was on school grounds. However, it is in the penal code, it is in the books that if you have permission from a school official, you can be on grounds. Reporter the diocese says a former Human Resources employee wrote the letter in november 2010, just six months after he was sentenced for molesting a child under 14. But the diocese wouldnt say who that employee is or when he or she left the job, saying its a personnel matter. Bishop patrick mcgraff apologized for the failure of the diocese to follow its own policies. Yesterday cabrini pastor father lew resigned. Several parents had criticized him for defending gurries right to be at the school. She had to jump through a lot of hoops to volunteer. I had to get fingerprinted. I have to provide, keep my insurance updated. I have to do the h6 record for my driving record. They wanted to see if i had any tickets. Reporter she said she was shocked to learn gurries was able to get the green light to be near kids. It does scare me. I think it should be the parents decision, not just one official at the school or in the church or it shouldnt be just one persons decision that could affect hundreds of people. Reporter she and other parents we talk to agree, no loophole or letter is worth putting kids at risk. Father lew will continue to serve with the diocese of san jose, but he will no longer be a pastor. Reporting live in san jose, Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. Well, it could delay the delivery of your holiday gifts. Workers at the port of oakland are on strike. They include clerical worker, janitors and electricians who are members of sciu local 1021. Coming up at 6 00, nbc bay areas sam brock examines what is at stake here, and who is telling the truth on tonights reality check. Driving to see your relatives this thanksgiving day might take a little more time because rain is on the way to the bay area. Chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is in the nbc bay area Weather Center to show us when and where the rain will fall. Thats right. Fits the holidays, it seems like Mother Nature is pushing in some sort of storm system. Thats what is happening right now. The nature of this is very slow going. Weve had rainfall up into the north bay for about the past 12 to 18 hours. Roadways are dramatically different if youre traveling from the south bay. It is very slick on highway 101, up into santa rosa where we had a quarter to a half inch again. More to the south, showers developing in San Francisco, oakland, all the way down to san mateo with some of the worst delays right at this current moment at San Francisco international airport, running two and a half to three hours behind. We do expect over the next 24 hours for those delays at sfo to stick to one to two hours, possibly near an hour in oakland. And san jose could also fall behind an estimated 30 minutes as we head throughout the next 24 hours. Not only for traveling by road or air, but if youre doing any kind of skiing up in the sierra, Winter Weather advisory there, just enough snow to make it very slick and slushy. Well let you know how much travelers could get if youre headed that way, coming up in a few minutes. Okay, jeff. Well see you soon. Still to come, were investors duped . A Silicon Valley tech giant comes clean about a multibillion deal. Clothing optional . San francisco leaders take a stand on people who hang out nude in public. The new ruling. An equal opportunity comes to the medicine cabinet. A new promise for the drug being called the female viagra. Stay with us. Its the naked truth in San Francisco. No private parts in public showing. They passed the ban on nudity. The vote was tight, 65. Its passage wouldnt outlaw nudity all the time. It would still be aloud during certain permitted events such as guy pride, the bay to breakers race and the folsom street fair. A group has filed an opposing the ban saying its an infringement of rights. It still needs a second vote and approval by the mayor that is expected to happen. Therefore, the nudity ban should go into effect by next february. We messed up. Thats the 9 billion admission by a bay area tech giant today. A mistake that is costing the Company Credibility and costing investors money. Our business and tech recorder scott budman has been following the latest hp mess. Scott, this could affect a lot of people here in the bay area records it really could, janelle. Hp employees a lot of people here and there are a lot of investors that own hp stock here, although that numbers that been dropping lately. Hp admitting drastically overpaying for autonomy stock. They paid 11. 4 billion last year when meg whitman was on the board of directors. Today whitman admitted theyre writing down nearly 9 billion of the deal because they paid more than autonomy was worth. Whitman also claimed she and her company were duped. We believe that there is a willful effort on the part of certain members of autonomy management to mislead shareholders when autonomy was a publicly held company and mislead potential buyers, including hp. Here is the bottom line. Investors dont care why the money was lost, but they fled for exits from the opening bell today, sending hp stock to its lowest level in a decade. For its part, autonomy officials, many who left after the buyout deny any attempt to mislead hp. This one, raj, could very likely end up in court. Thank you, scott. Very interesting. Now to an nbc bay area followup. The man who stopped traffic in san jose for nearly four hours is now facing charges. 26yearold david gerkin is charged with resisting a peace officer, disturbing the bus line and violating his parole. He was on top of a vta bus, as you see here. This happened yesterday at the corner of first street and keyes, demanding to speak with his father. He was not armed and came down after a fourhour standoff with police. He was taken into custody and evaluated at a medical care facility. The Sheriffs Office says he may have a Mental Health issue. A milestone for the new eastern span of the bay bridge. Its supporting itself. Caltrans announced today that it has shifted the entire weight of the bridge deck to the cable system. Before that, the deck was held up by temporary supports which will now be removed. Engineers say the Load Transfer represents the last major milestone for this project. Were never really afraid that we were going to drop the bridge into the bay, but it could have taken us a lot longer. Caltrans is hoping for a bit of dry weather. It doesnt look likely in the near future to get the work done. That includes a lot of painting and installing the asphalt roadway. The new bridge is set to open next year on labor day weekend. The state now has bigger problems on the roads than drunk driving. A recent survey shows there are more drugged drivers than drunk drivers during the weekend. 14 of those surveyed tested positive for driving under the influence of an illegal or prescription drug. Well, californias highest paid state employee has been fired. He is a football coach. Cal fired head coach jeff tedford today. He is the winningest coach in school history, and really resurrected this program when he took over 11 years ago. He led the golden bears to five bowl wins and spearheaded the renovation of memorial stadium. But after three straight losses in the big game to stanford, and a 1522 record in the last three seasons, that all led to his dismissal today. Cal still owes tedford about 7 million remaining on his contract. That money will come from the university endowment, and not from taxes or student fees. Class act, jeff tedford. I think a lot of cal fans are really thankful for what he did in the program. For sure. Looking at the radar, you can see rain is moving into the bay area. Lets check with jeff ranieri. Thats right. It wouldnt be thanksgiving without not only some football, but also of course some rain on the radar. It is a very active time for us here across the bay area. Right now this storm system finally starting to get a little bit of motion back behind. Its been so slow going, its been pretty much in the same spot over the past 12 to 18 hours. What were finding now is heavy rainfall extending to petaluma. Also novato, starkly different conditions on the roadways if you are headed up to the north bay, lets say this evening. Be prepared to come up on some wet roadways really quickly, take it slow out there. Its the holidays. Were trying to rush and get a lot done. Seeing a few sprinkles is going to make it a lot more dangerous. Also in San Francisco, were finding some of the worst delays. Some developing showers across the peninsula, also near oakland and hayward, running about two and a half hours behind schedule. So if youre picking up anyone at the airport, be prepared for those delays. The overall rainfall totals pretty impressive when you think in the past 12 hours, santa rosa. 33. San francisco 0. 04. Were going to continue to add to that. Not only here but across the bay area. Yes, even in the sierra. Not too much happening right now. But over the next 6 to 8 hours, if youre heading there tonight, be prepared for possibly some treacherous conditions. Some major traffic. That snow is going to start to build. Its not expected to be too heavy. But about 4 to 8 inches near 7,000 feet. But here is the thing. If youre crossing t ing thing winds could top 60 to 80 miles per hour. The Golden Gate Bridge dry right now. No windshield wipers on. Were going to see the intermittent showers sliding slowly off to the south for tonight. So timing is right on with this storm system. As we get back to the weather boards, what youre going to find is not only temperatures are dropping here, mainly into the 60s for a lot of us, but rain not even expected here for south bay until we head into about 1 00 a. M. , 2 00 a. M. , and also 3 00 a. M. Thats just how slow going this storm system is going to be. So a lot of the energy looks like its going to get squeezed out by the time it gets to san jose and points southward. Also for those of you back into livermore. Tomorrow morning youll wake up with showers. I know a lot are traveling on wednesday. Here is the good part. If youre leaving in the afternoon hours, were going to get some clearing skies and also some Sunshine Building in. Looks really great as we head throughout your wednesday afternoon. Here is a look at the overall estimates. Again, just a general idea of who could get the most rain, right up in the north bay close to an inch. And down here towards the south bay, there is that huge disparitisy, only 0. 0 to maybe a tenth of an inch expected in san jose. Showers pushing to the south tonight, lingering for the Morning Hours and clearing out tomorrow afternoon. Major airport delays likely into tomorrow morning. Not only at the airports, but up across the sierra. Temperatures on wednesday low to mid60s, staying pretty much similar to what we had today. But increased sunshine by the afternoon. On your threeday forecast, sunny skies on thursday as we head into thanksgiving. And then on friday, weve got a lot to be thankful here for. A lot of sunshine coming your way. Even on saturday, we have low 70s. A little bit of fog on sunday. Then by monday and tuesday, cloud cover will gradually build here in advance of our next storm system.
