Now, even the sheriff is asking will we need to build a new jail. This is one of the lowest jail populations ever per capita which makes our jails one of the most undercrowded in the united states. Theres another number, the sheriff says, is just as important. 1460. Thats the number of people serving a sentence outside jail walls today. Here is where San Francisco is a pioneer. If Substance Abuse is the issue, theyre getting the treatment and they dont have to incarcerate. If people had access to residential treatment, if people had access to good, mental hemt care, if people had access to affordable housing, they wouldnt be in jail in the first place there have been talks about building a branld new jail with one plant putting the cost to 600 million. The two costs are too unsafe. It begs the question because of a declining jail population, will we need a new jail . I think thats open for discussion. Today, the sheriffs ufs had its first hiring. The police saying more officers on the streets means more arrest. This will not translate into an increase in population as long as they stay the course. Nbc bay area news. It found that the head of justice studies has used nearly 7 rks 7,000 for personal expenses that included an ipad, plane tickets and parking charges. He gets caught, he reimburses the money. Apparently, nothing else happens. Is that justice . Absolutely not. Thats theater, basically. After he was questioned about the unait rised Checking Account after he closed 2 account and admitted to spending 6800 on personal items and exz penszs, the doctor returned the money. But san jose concluded there was no indication of fiscal impro pryty. They declare that no fiscal impropriety occurred, its an oxymoron. It doesnt make sense. Oh, absolutely. And even more so because it following the investigation, san jose students organized an online petition. So far, more than 300 signatures calling for a more thorough investigation.
