The pilot for Southwest Airlines reported the problem after the plane took off from burbank. San jose fire crews were there to meet this plane on the tarmac as the flight made it to the runway. Santa clara county always maintained a protocol for active shooter situations but the new protocol being worked out now calls for a new role and new bulletproof vests for firefighters. The start of the active Shooter Drill by Santa Clara County agencies have familiar understandable procedures with trained armed Law Enforcement officers checking on this victim then conducting a search in the area where there is still a threat. The socalled warm zone. But the difference now is how fast firefighter paramedics and medical technicians are brought into that warm zone and theyll be wearing blue bulletproof vests and helmets. Weve learned a lot of less. S from the active shooters weve seen throughout the country and want to be well prepared here. The idea is to get patients, people who are injured, perhaps in an active shooter, perhaps in another type of incident, get them treatment and get them transported so they can hopefully recover. Reporter the change from firefighters staying on the fringe to being possibly in the midst of an incident means more than just wearing new ballistic equipment. Its a whole new role. Theres been a lot of concern which is exactly why were doing the training that were doing. Want to make sure everybody is comfortable working that environment so theres no hesitation in the moment of need. I think the community expects that both their Public Safety arms, police and fire, as well as ems, work closely together. And this protocol brought us all together as one collaborative group. Reporter well, the sheriff and other agencies plan a series of these joint response Training Drills similar to the exercise we saw today. Some serious suspicions about gent arify case in San Francisco. A county supervisor says lowincome people are being forced out. A fivealarm fire two weeks ago is still unsolved in Bernal Heights. Supervisor david comp poos it s its too much of a coincidence theyre being forced out likely to be replaced by wealthier tenants and businesses. The Fire Department was quick to dispute the claim saying the number of fires in the mission and Bernal Heights are actually training downwards and not up. A teenage girl in the hospital tonight after her houses erupted into flames. The girl trapped in the back bedroom of her burning home in hayward. Her older brother and nephew were also hurt. You know, there were a lot of people around when this fire started. It was happening right as many people were heading to work and that man says he saw the flames and then heard screams coming from inside the bedroom here behind me. He rushed inside. Called 911. And was inside trying to get that 16yearold girl out even before firefighters arrived. He was just on his way to work. Screaming for sister, pleading for her to come toward the voice. Reporter when he spotted a 17yearold boy carrying out this 8yearold nephew from their burning home at gribben avenue in hayward. Asked them if anybody else was inside the house. He said his sister was still in the house. Reporter thats when nguyen rushed in to try to save the teens 16yearold sister trapped in her bedroom. The smoke was too thick. I couldnt breathe. It got too hot. I had to back back out. Reporter firefighters arrived a few minutes later and pulled the girl out. There was obviously high heat in the back bedroom, smoke inhalation i would assume is her major concern right now. Im not here. Reporter the childrens father, sergio, says he and his wife were at work when the fire started. Come here, i see the the first thing you see, you think, i want to go inside and everything is reporter the two boys suffered minor injuries. She look eed unconscious. Her eyes were rolled in back of her head. Reporter the 16yearold is fighting for her life. That was my biggest fear that, you know, we didnt get to her in time. Reporter and the girl has been air lifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center tonight where shes being treated for lifethreatening injuries. School is out for good in a East San Jose charter school. When it closed a couple months ago, Magnolia Science Academy moved in. It lost its lease at its initial location in santa clara. Despite a free busing program, enrollment declined. Today magnolia announced its closing the school because they couldnt find a permanent home in the current real estate market. The building on story road still houses a graduate studies program run by santa clara university. It is the Largest Development in Silicon Valley history. And its coming to santa clara. Overnight, Santa Clara City Council approved a project called city place. While it will bring muchneeded housing to the area, others think its going to create more shortage and problems in Silicon Valley. This would add tens of thousands of jobs with maybe only hundreds of homes. The traffic around here is already horrific. Three oakland landlords filing a lawsuit against the city of oakland saying theyve seen a drastic increase in garbage fees and blaming a bad contract. Were joined from oakland city hall. What would they like the lawsuit to do . Reporter the three landlords would like to see the city of oakland renegotiate the contract with the Service Providers and if they dont, they say they could pass some of the skyrocketing fees to new renters. It wasnt always like this for robert str robert, but the owner of this oakland apartment complex says the city has created an uphill battle for himself and fellow oakland landlords. We have to bring those out to the curb, ourselves. They took that service away from us. Reporter hes part of the lawsuit filed against the city of oakland today thats asking the city to rework its billiondollar garbage contract with Waste Management and california waste solutions. A contract signed nearly a year ago. The lawsuit is sponsored by the east bay rental housing association. An attorney for the group claims the contract includes a 30 million franchise fee thats money ultimately going to the city, but the companies are passing the costs on to customers. As a consequence, theyre not really fees at all. Theyre tax. Reporter zolly showed us his bills including a new service fee of more than 300 to push and pull his dumpster. Theyve gone from 736 a month up to 1,062 a month. Reporter and the costs could mean bad news for any renter moving in. Eventually, it will get transferred to new tenants moving in because somebodys got to be able to break that 10,000 a year extra. Reporter now, we did reach out to the City Attorney for response to the lawsuit. They say they havent received the papers yet so they did not have a comment. Live in oakland, nbc bay area news. Pete, thank you. An east bay couple is facing felony hit run charges this evening. Police say the man and woman ran from the scene of a threecar crash that injured a 12yearold girl. Happened off clayton road each of concord. Police say the young girl was a passenger in one of the other vehicles and suffered a minor head injury. Investigators say a loaded gun and some stolen property was found in the car that the couple abandoned. Eli rudnick seen here and Kayla Tindall were caught a short time later in a nearby home. A deadly crash in the north bay. A big rig slammed into a tree and burst into flames. This is east of petaluma. See the video here. The truck driver died in this crash. The chp closed lakeville highway up until just a short time ago while they cleared this wreckage. No word yet on what caused this crash. A dramatic rescue at mt. Diablo state park. Crews had to use this helicopter cable to actually lift a hiker from the ground after the hiker fell off a cliff. San ramon valley fire and calfire were called out around 12 30 today. Rescue crews waited with the hiker on a hilltop before the hiker could be taken to the hospit hospital. No word on the condition of the hiker or how he fell. A bulldozer caught fire on a ridge above the tony Blackhawk Development in danville and led to a grassfire today. Investigators trying to figure out exactly what happened. Three acres burned before they were able to contain it. Luckily no one was hurt. Purple turned green. Downtown san jose today. Green tech atop a local landmark. Solar panels installed on the roof of the childrens discovery museum. That museum as you might know is purple. This is the new part of the museum where kids get to make things themselves. The solar panels will be part of the Environmental Education programs there. Mayor sam laccardo said the panels will generate half needed to run this new facility. Were going to be narrowly focused on Greenhouse Gas reduction, water conservation, combatting the drought and with those key goals, solar is absolutely critical. Two companies, clean solar and sun power donated these panels. And theyre teaching actually all those people how to install the panels themselves. Very nice. The work will be done there. We were just a few minutes ago taking a look at the fog near the coastline. Thats where its still in the 50s while we did have a wide range in temperatures. 61 in the east bay, south bay 69 degrees. In the north bay, 72 degrees. Lets drop in on the north bay to get a closer look with Weather Underground sites. Napa, 72. Also 72 in petaluma. Hillsburg at 77. And in belvedere, 63 degrees. Well continue to see the fog near the coast. And High Pressure for the inland areas. And over the next couple of days, it kind of moves off to the east and does allow for more of a sea breeze and some cooler air. Well see that for just a couple of days before a pattern changes once again. So High Pressure still pumping in some heat for the valleys and once again, a cooler coastline for the day as we head into tomorrow in the mid 60s in San Francisco, while we have upper 90s for antioch and mid 990s fo livermore.
