More than 2,000 fire personnel from around the state are now in Mariposa County. Thousands who live in this area have been evacuated. And perhaps the most sobering number, the fire is only 7 contained. Tom jensen joins us from near the front lines in mariposa. Is anyone there where you are and whats the status . Reporter the town is pretty much empty. And you talk about, raj, all of those firefighters. The one thing we have not seen is a lot of tankers, but we have seen helicopter after helicopter dumping buckets of water on these homes and the property around these homes in mayor misa, desperately trying to save these houses. This is what many evacuees see as they flee their homes. The fire moving so fast and in so many directions. This woman told us she was up all night worrying. And listening to the fire crackle and pop, moving closer to her 300 acre ranch sheer colterville. We are mortified. They came to our house this morning, told us to get out. And leave the doors open in case they have to take refuge. Reporter historic colterville got the Evacuation Order this morning, joining mariposa, 30 miles away. Career firefighters say with the terrain, the wind and the fuels you have here, this is some of the most volatile fire behavior they have ever seen. Homeowners have been watching it too, shift towards one town and then another shes moving five Different Directions and theres only four. Reporter chuck murphy says hes staying behind to protect his house and his neighbors public shelters have been taking in families and even horses, cattle and other animals. Any road trip would be impacted by it. We saw the pictures at lake tahoe. It gets worse as you head more to the south from several wildfires burning. Air quality alert in effect foreall of the Central Valley and then back toward the sierra. So if you are doing a road trip on 5 or t99, make sure to leave the ac on recirculate so youre not breathing this air. The push is putting it closer to mariposa, limiting access to 49 and 140. Keep in mind the fire started well off to the north and west of mariposa, but the southerly push, the fire rapidly growing is getting closer to downtown, and thats why the evacuations are in place. Officially, jail Officials Say it is undetermined what drugs caused the overdose. But sources tell us it may have been heroin. Now investigators need to determine how the drugs got in. No doubt they are doing a cell to cell search at this hour. And were told the inmates are recovering at area hospitals. All of the inmates are expected to survive. This is just the latest in a series of problems in the Santa Clara County jail system. Three jail guards were convicted of murder last month, for beating a mentally ill inmate to death. That and a slew of other problems have critics demanding the sheriff to give control of the jail back to the county. A smash and grab in broad daylight at an east pay jewelry store. Tonight police are looking for the stolen jewels and the suspects. It happened around 11 00 this morning at ron jewelers at the summer Hill Town Center mall in aint yok. The clerk said four or five men came into the store wearing construction outfits. They pepper sprayed him and smashed the display cases with sledgehammers and grabbed all the jewelry they could. These people are very dirty. Ive never seen in the daytime like this. The the suspects took off in a silver infinite sedan. No one else weigas hurt in the robbery. Police are looking at surveillance individuvideo. Multiple fires were set last night. The fires popped up minutes aparty fr apart in antioch. Four more fires popped up in the next hour, all within a onemile radius. Weve eliminated all natural cause, so its definitely considered arson at this point. Were searching for anyone involved with our arson investigator and aint yok pd. Crews were able to knock down all five of the fires, no major damage. Thankfully no one was hurt. Police are hoping any wone who w something spacious will give them a call. Reporter police have arrested six members of the gang known as the manor boys. In the last year, gang members have been linked to three separate homicides. Most recently, the shooting death of 20 year old ali schweitzer shot and killed in may in what police are saying is a drug dial with minimums of the manor boys. A teenager was arrested in that case and one other suspect is still wanted. Richmond police teamed up request the fbi. Theyre linked to Armed Robbery and drug traffic king and credi card fraud. Were looking at something here that probably would be greater than the sum of all the existing storage we have in the county today. They are currently draining water out of the current reservoirs, so they need more capacity, but theyre draining water, so that seems to be at odds with one another.
