KNTV NBC Bay Area News Tonight August 27, 2022

We head into the weekend with a disturbing story on bart. The hunt is on for a man who shot someone inside of a bart train, today. It happened in oakland on a train headed to San Francisco. Sky ranger was overhead as emergency crews rushed a man to a waiting ambulance. This was outside the lake merritt bart station. Police believe the shooting happened somewhere between the call is sue him and the coliseum and fruitvale stations. The shots triggered panic and sent others running into other cars. A bunch of kids came out of the back cars. People were freaking out. I said someone was having a fight. They started screaming bloody murder. After i finally heard all the muffled voices someone said grab the police. Some got shot. Terrifying moments. Bart police say they believe the shooter actually got off of the train at the fruitvale stop. They are looking over what they are calling very clear images from multiple surveillance cameras. We should reiterate and say the Police Believe the shooting was targeted. Asked for the person who was shot, that person is undergoing emergency surgery. Another headline. We have no information about exactly what happened and what the fbi was looking for when they searched President Trumps maralago estate. Heavily redacted Court Documents were unsealed. The documents reveal the department of justice believed highly Sensitive National security information was being kept at maralago illegally. The doj got involved after an initial set of documents were recovered in january. Some of the documents included some of the most closely held secrets in the u. S. Government. Agents suspected more documents were at maralago. Ultimately, 11 sets of classified documents and some marked top secret. A lot of the specifics are a part of the redacted information. Reaction to this new information largely spit split, as you can imagine. They were asked about it during an event in San Francisco. Speaker nancy pelosi said she has yet to read the full release but the affidavit raises questions about why President Trump out of the documents. It underscores the fact that not only was this a reckless act by the former president , it may in fact be a criminal act. It is important for us to know at some point how at risk our National Security was. Many republicans have defended the former president saying the affidavit and are more about politics rather than criminal matters. We have been talking about this for months. It appears it is actually happening. Our freeways will have more cameras beginning this fall. The cameras are a part of a series come after a series of deadly shootings in the east bay. That includes jasper who was hit by a stray bullet when writing in oakland. The Governors Office agreed to launch a Pilot Program to install 200 new cameras along multiple freeways across california. A large chunk of them will be going in alameda and contra costa county. Today, caltrans confirmed they recently purchased the cameras. The rest are scheduled to be installed by next spring. This is a big weekend in the south bay. It is the Silicon Valley pride festival. However, there is tension between organizers and police. It is about cops marching in this parade. The San Jose Police department asked organizers to participate in full uniform. Silicon valley pride agreed to allow uniform but asked officers not to where their duty belts which included their gun. They say that will not work, noting that they are required any officer in full uniform, to wear a belt with gun and handcuffs. The department decided to withdraw. Organizers say the request reflects the feelings of the lgbtq community, and are complicated with the history of law enforcement. The trauma and history does not represent all law enforcement, but it is still there. The understanding needs to come on both ends the pride board in San Francisco originally banned uniformed officers but ultimately, pride and as fpd reached an agreement where the majority of officers were not in uniform, and instead, wore more casual outfits with the Department Logo on them. Damien, how many cops want to march innocent san jose . Is there a group of lgbtq cops are seat or some people that support the organization . Every Police Officer if they are not on duty, would like to march in the pride parade, whether they are or straight. It is an important event for the department. It symbolizes what they are about. They say diversity and whatnot. They are probably there are probably a couple of dozen officers who identify as lgbtq . There is a lot of support. They are flying the pride flag outside of police headquarters. They have been doing that for several years. This is something that they couldnt get past. They said we talked about it in the official role is to carry their belt with a gun. Is there no exception or flex ability . It is in the duty manual. You cant break the rules in your own duty manual. That is what it says. If you are going to be wearing a full uniform that includes the duty belt, which includes pepper scrape spray. Include a handgun, a taser gun and weapons that officers use as well. There is no way around it. They wanted to be in full uniform but it requires a utility belt. The pride parade in san jose is sunday. Do you see any lastminute agreements with sf pd . It doesnt sound like it. The chief sent out an email this morning. I saw that email. It is pretty straightforward. We will not be participating, they say, in prior events this year. They are hoping to go back to the table after this years event and maybe ironing out those differences and see if they can come up with a compromise. It seems disappointing for a lot of people, but we will follow this story. Thank you, damien. Also, an update from San Franciscos sinking and leaning Millennium Tower. The city signed off on the latest scaleddown plan to fix this luxury tower. There are still concerns that the fix could come up short. Originally, construction crews wanted it installed with 52 support piles into bedrock. Each time they started drilling and digging to install each of those 52 piles, the building would leave even more. Now, the plan is to stick with the original 18 support piles already installed and instead, extend the buildings foundation and attach one corner of the building to some of those piles. Joining us is jackson vanderbeck and who has been exposing multiple problems of the Millennium Tower for years. Why wont this new plan work . What are they telling you . This plan is essentially a scaleddown version of the original 52 support piles. They are only talking about 18. Obviously skeptical engineers wonder how they could have done the work with h2 sure that assert they have never done the kind of analysis needed to determine how many piles were actually needed for this project. As a result, when they did finally do the review, they came up with the number 18. That is the now approved number. You have in covering for years. Does it seem like they are throwing things against the wall and seeing what sticks . Well, you would think that except not a lot has stuck so far. Every move they have made has led to further complications. More sinking and more tilting, which, had they done nothing, some engineers argue, the building would be in a lot better shape today. That is fascinating you even say that. If this new plan works, when could construction finally be over . When could this must be done . They are hoping to get partial support of a corner of the building by the end of this year. Of course, they need to do more work beyond that. We are talking next year, for sure, to be completely done. Right now, the plan is to dig. It is kind of a perilous court. They can put an extension to the foundation there, and support that to existing piles they have already installed waiting to be activated, so to speak. That is the plan. It is a risky situation, but that is the current approach. You talk to a lot of homeowners and on a scale of 1 10, how frustrated are they . What are they saying to you . I think they are very, very frustrated. They dont know what to do. They have seen this fix go from bad to worse. They have tried to get answers and they have not been able to get a lot of answers from management of their association. They are basically in a holdfast wait and see situation. Thank you, jackson. Up next, housing markets across the country overvalued. That includes us in the bay area. What does this mean for housing prices in the coming months . The fight over geese continues on the peninsula. A city planning to kill dozens of them. One local leader is joining the growing list of people who are growing list of people who are not on bod with ar here at city of refuge, we house up to 26 families. We reduce homelessness, address mental health, provide spaces for addiction to be broken, create spaces of healing and restoration. For the first time ever, prop 27 will provide permanent funding for organizations like ours. Saying yes to prop 27 means more people get the assistance that they nee they get someone to partner in such a way to see transformation come to them. Yes on prop 27, because theres no place like home. This is a slippery slope. Are bay area home values overvalued or are we just paying more because so many people want to be here and not enough homes to meet the demand . Many experts predict other parts of the country could sue see price drops by as much as 20 . Will we see that here . We have some of the new numbers. Other parts of the country dropping 20 , i dont see that happening here. We have high hopes but it doesnt look like it. What is happening right now, spoke with an analyst that says we are seeing a housing correction. So many homes across the country are overvalued including here in the bay area. By how much . Well, they say right now, the entire bay area of homes are overvalued by about 12 15 . Make it doesnt mean were going anywhere, does it . No. Compared to other parts of the country and it doesnt sound so bad. Boise, idaho, their homes are overvalued by 72 . That is high. Charlotte, North Carolina 65 . It makes it seem like it is not that bad. But, prices are expected to change. Will prices drop in the bay area . It looks like we are already starting to see prices drop and they will continue to drop for the next several months, maybe until early next year. We are not certain, right . Let us go ahead and hear from a deputy chief analyst. He was what he had to say. I could see prices soften, for sure. Just because an area is labeled as overvalued doesnt mean it is going to crash anytime soon. There are a lot of other factors going on here. The bay area, in particular, has been in some sets, overvalued for decades. There are some overvalued places. We are still buying it. Are there other cities in the bay area that are undervalued . It is a good thing you asked, because yes. Actually, one city, south San Francisco. He explains it. The city proper of south San Francisco is on the lower end. They may be a little undervalued. There are some issues in terms of Office Vacancies downtown and pricing pressure. Lettuce had to south San Francisco. What does this mean in terms for buyers . Is it a good time to buy . We keep asking this question. We keep asking this question but it is important to remind everyone. If you are buying longterm, analyst say yes, now is a good time to buy. Prices will fluctuate, but youre trying to stay there for a while. Chris actually said in the bay area, we are always going to see prices increase because it is such a desirable area. If you plan to buy shortterm, maybe be a little more cautious because we dont expect to see home prices increase rapidly anytime soon. I dont know anyone buying shortterm here. Thank you. To see all of our reporting about the housing crisis, head to our app and search making it in the bay. The saga continues about the geese in foster city. Protesters are rallying tonight to save the birds from a deadly plan. The rally includes the San Mateo County supervisor calling for the city leaders to abandon the plan that would kill 100 canadian geese. The city council put out a video saying there is a lot of misinformation. We understand the concerns that exist within this decision. That is why i am here to assure you depredation would only be used selectively and in conjunction with nonlethal alternatives, should they not be effective. Some of those alternatives are options that could be considered including new fencing and robots. Also, burning man is back in a big way. It will be full of campers and art installations. It starts sunday and last for one week. This is the first burning man in a couple of years because of the pandemic. Nothing like there were some smaller so called burns during the pandemic, but nothing like what we were going to see. Burning man known for those big crowds and a lot of arts, but the crowd is also known to lack diversity. A census in 2018 found only 10 of earners are people of color. One burner, in the bay area, aaron douglas, noticed this and wanted to documents people that looked like her. She started the black burner project. She photographed people of color at burning man. Eventually it warped into a massive art installation. That was the main thing. The project will be on display through the week. We can watch the full interview at nbcbayarea. Com.
