KNTV Sunday Today With Willie Geist May 14, 2017

Update. And our sunday sitdown with twitter cofounder and Ceo Jack Dorsey. Hes attempting a turnaround at the social media platform thats used by 300 million people, including its highest profile user, the president of the United States. Im sure you hear from the same people i see on twitter who are maybe progressives or democrats who dont like donald trump and they say, how can you give this man a platform to say all the things hes been saying since he started to run for president . How do you respond to them . I believe its really important to hear directly from our leadership and i believe its really important to hold them accountable. Our sunday sitdown with fwiter cofounder and Ceo Jack Dorsey later. Lets begin with the latest Ballistic Missile test by north korea, a country President Trump has put front and center on his Foreign Policy radar. Nbcs Janice Mackey freyr is live for us with the latest. Good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. The test by all accounts was a success, traveling 430 miles before dropping into the sea of japan near russia. It was launched from the northwestern city of kusong, the site of a launch in february, and japans government taking note of the altitude, saying it reached 1,250 miles, leading experts to believe it may not be the intercontinental Ballistic Missile that the north has been threatening to test but is likely an intermediaterange Ballistic Missile thats still capable of reaching u. S. Military targets in the pacific including guam. Now, the timing of the test obviously a challenge to south koreas new president , who was sworn in just last week. He said today it was deemly regrettable because hes open to talks with the north if the conditions are right. Thats something President Trump had echoed and just a couple of days ago a top north korean envoy to the United States saying that the regime would be open to that, too, so it seems counterintuitive, but if you look at the track record for north korea and its posturing, it could be that theyre trying to up the stakes knowing that talks are in the cards. But this is an embarrassment for china. North koreas main ally. This is the opening day of a huge summit being posted by xi jinping. 29 heads of state are here including russias vladimir putin. Its from a massive infrastructure project, some call it chinas marshall plan, and its the center piece of chinas going global strategy. So this is bound to test the patience of beijing at a time when its already been hinting at unprecedented frustration with north korea. Willie . And china of course a country thats theoretically supposed to be able to rein in north korea. Janice, thank you. North korea an ongoing Foreign Policy challenge for the white house as it deals with the fallout from the firing of fbi director james comey and now looks for someone to replace him. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is live for us at the white house on this sunday morning. Good morning. Good morning, willie. Picking up on that first threat, the white house does tell us the president was briefed on the test and it also made an interesting note about the trajectory of the north Korean Missile test. The white house saying it cannot imagine that russia is pleased. Going on to say in a further written statement from the press secretary north korea has been a flagrant menace for far too long. Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nati ss to implement far stronger sanctions on north korea. The president has no Public Events today but sources say hes expected to be working toward a very big decision, his choice for fbi director. Reporter the search is on for a new fbi director. Howd it go . A string of continue tenders visited the department of justice saturday, arriving on foot and behind darkened windows. President trump says he will make a decision soon, possibly this week. Very well known, highly respected, really talented people. And thats what we want for the fbi. Reporter eight candidates with legal and Law Enforcement backgrounds completed round one of interviews, while the former director fired by President Trump, james comey, was briefly spotted at home saturday. He has not spoken publicly. After the president s provocative tweet suggesting tapes may exist of his conversations with comey. President trump did not respond when i asked if tapes exist. Mr. President , are you recording any of your meetings in the white house, sir . Are you recording any of your meetings, sir . In an interview on fox news saturday night, the president said he is surprised by the comey firing fallout. Look, i thought that this would be a very popular thing that i did. All of the democrats couldnt stand him. But because thi terminated him, they said we get political point, well go against trump. Reporter frustrated by media coverage, the president responded to reports hes considering a shakeup of his Communications Team and called press Secretary Sean Spicer a wonderful human being. Hes doing a good job but he gets beat up. Will he be there tomorrow . Yeah, wem, here been there from the beginning. Reporter saturday he delivered a commencement address at the largest christian school, liberty university. In my short time in washington, ive seen first handle how the system is broken. Reporter and gave students advice with a familiar ring. Being an outsider is fine. Embrace the label. Because its the outsider who is change the world and who make a real and lasting difference. Reporter and the time line for making a decision about the fbi director is affected in part because of the week ahead the president has. He will be making his First International trip leaving at the end of this week visiting saudi arabia, israel, italy, and belgium. And so advisers say they hope that the next several days will be quieter to give him some space to prepare for that trip. Willie . Kelly odonnell at the white house for us. Thanks so much. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good to see you. Good morning, willie. It wasnt long ago this was supposed to be the week of sally yates. Her testimony was on monday, now feels like a lifetime ago, testifying before the senate subcommittee. A day later President Trump fires his fbi director and all that follow frld there with the mixed explanations of how it hammed and why it happened. Now he says he wants this week to nominate a new director. What kind of a choice do you expect him to make . If you look at the list of folks, he could go down two different paths here. One path is an elected official path which i think in this environmentitis a little shaky. You have cornyn on there, senator cornyn, mike rogers, a former member of congress. Theres never been an elected official as a director of the fbi and with charges of politicizing this investigation i dont know somebody whos sort of made their career in Public Service with a Political Party i. D. Is going to be able to get through. I think the Fran Townsend idea is the most intriguing. She is a Clinton Former clinton official, former bush official, has been on television as a security analyst. We know the president likes people that can handle the media spotlight. I think of the folks on that list shes the one that strikes me as the one that could get the broadest bipartisan support. Do you think hes going to go for a loyalist, chuck . All theyre reporting this week that he asked james comey to pledge his loyalty to the president of the United States, a charge the president denies. Can he afford to do that at this point . Look, on paper, no. I mean, it seems like of course not, but that doesnt mean he might not do it. You know, pledge ti of people told him firing comey last week, you may want to get rid of him but get your ducks in a row, take your time, have somebody lined up. He didnt listen to that advice either. So, look, i dont think he can. I think the safest thing to do is to find somebody that democrats would feel comfortable with. But clearly, from the reports were getting even about cabinet second toirs hes unhappy with lately, its the ones that dont show more deference to him are the ones that are in trouble. I want to talk about whats going on this inside the west wing right now. For two days after the firing of jim comey, you had everybody in the white house, including the Vice President of the United States, by the way, saying President Trump made this decision based on the recommendation of Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein, that it was he who recommended to President Trump he ought to get rid of comey. Then donald trump sits down with lester holt and says, no, i had made that decision before i ever heard from rosenstein. How do you explain that out of the white house are where you have people going on tv and telling one story that appears to be their story and then a president who completely contra districts it . It seems to me what happened here is it was a decision in search of a rationale. The decision was made, then a rationale was created. And i think the operative side of the white house, who comes from more of a professional political operative background are just looking to trump at that rationale. You theyre from mike pence and from sean spicer and Sara Huckabee sanders. Then of course an intervening event happened, it appears to be Rod Rosenstein didnt like being used as the rationale, and suddenly the president with lester holt said no, it was on me, i took it and he threw everybody under the bus. I think what you have here, willie, based on my own reporting and watching all this, is you have a president whose inner circle has gotten much smaller and that inner circle is communicated this decision to the traditional inner circle of a west wing who right now isnt quite sure whats in the president s head. Thats a recipe for disaster right now, which is why theyve got to fix this problem inside that west wing. Something even the Vice President doesnt know whats going on inside president s head and goes out and contradicts him. Chuck, i have to thank you. I got some prime swag right here. I got a meet the press mug you guys sent from washington. And i have a sunday today Swimming Pool you sent from new york. Its giant. Thatstwogallon coffee mug. I have no coffee in here and we poured a whole cup. Were on early. We need every drop of that stuff, you know what i mean . Right on, brother. Happy mothers day to mrs. Geist. Thank you. To you as well. Ill be sitting with my new mug watching meet the press joined by chuck schumer, rex tillerson, and lindsey graham. This morning were learning that the cyberattack that crippled hospitals and businesses worldwide was actually worse than we thought. And there are fear s an even bigger attack could be coming. Nbcs kelis following the story. Reporter the euro poll director is calling this an attack on aun unprecedented scale. Hes saying there are 200,000 victims in at least 150 countries and warning it could get worse when people go back to work tomorrow and turn on their computers. Britains National Health service computers were the first to be hit friday forcing Emergency Rooms to be shut down, stopping surgeries, doctors, hospital staff couldnt access patient records or anything else on their computer networks. Britains prime minister, theresa may, says that system is now returning to normal. But this virus known as wanna cry has since spread to car manufacturers, russian banks and the countrys interior ministry, transport systems in europe, universities in china, and Federal Express in the United States. A 22yearold cybersecurity blogger known as malware tech, may have saved the day, at least temporarily, by accidentally finding a kill switch for the virus and slowing it down. He said he was surprised by the virus lack of sophistication. Lets head up to avon, connecticut. The smell wafted out into the woods and the bear made it clear he wanted in on the brownie bash. The bear pealed open the screen door and pushed his paw and nose against the glass to get just a little bit closer to that beautiful smell. When no invite was extended, the bear tried two other doors. Went around the house trying to get in. She called 911 but the bear bailed by the time the police arrived. I was cold in the house. Some areas are seeing 40 degrees. Happy mothers day, vicky. And i hope you are not planning on heading out just yet, because look at the temps. Very cold, peninsula 48 degrees. In the south bay and trivalley, still on the cooler side. But if you look at San Francisco, 48 degrees, north bay 41 and the east bay at about 49 warming up finally into the 50s. And we are expected to maintain those cooler temperatures throughout the day so slightly unseasonable, similar to yesterday and we could expect to see breezier conditions but the wind will be dying down tonight by about 12 00, 61 degrees in San Francisco. That is our expected high for today. In san jose, also sticking to those 60s by about 12 00, 63 degrees and the wind speeds, not too windy at about 13 Miles Per Hour in San Francisco and about 7 30 we could expect to see the winds pick up in half moon bay. A chilly one out there this morning. Thank you. We continue to follow a developing story in the east bay. A construction site has been safely removed overnight. Officials were worried that a crane could topple over and cause damage to surrounding areas. A fire broke out at about 5 00 yesterday morning at a 35 Million Development near the emeryvilleoakland border. The development has more than a hundred apartments and retail space planned. Is this all over . Oh. No, i didnt. Nothing matters. Absolutely nothing matters anymore. Saturday night live spoofing a busy week of news. Melissa mccarthy hosted. Since he entered the race for president nearly two years ago and long before that as a celebrity businessman, donald trump has used twitter as a running social media monologue. Just this week on twitter, President Trump commented on the congressional testimony of a former attorney general. He fought back against claims that his campaign colluded with the russian government. He threatened the fbi director he just fired. He commiserated with Rosie Odonnell and congratulating golfer john daly of winning the tournament. Jack dorsey is one of the companys cofounders. In 2015, he returned for a second run at ceo with a spotlight on him. I got together with the st. Louis native turned tech titan for a sunday sitdown. Reporter just 140 characters, giving us a glimpse of a hero, organizing a revolution. Taking down a politician or helping to elect one. The little bluebird making our big blue planet smaller. I dont know of any other service like it. My mom, for instance, she gets her news there but she has this group of women every day, they just talk about the sunrise and they say good morning to each other and they actually recently last year met each other in person in st. Louis. Reporter they hadnt met before . No. They found each other on twitter and bonded over sharing sunrise photos. Reporter did your mom say, i invented that . Yes. She considers herself a grandmother of twitter. Im not sure how that works. Reporter 300 billion tweets have been sent out since twitter was hatched in 2006. Tweet number one came from jack. Just setting up my twitter. When you guys first had the idea of twitter, what was the idea behind it . I said, wouldnt it be cool if i could be anywhere and text what im doing and whats happening or what i think. And that was the idea and we just built it, sent out that tweet. My next tweet was the more important one which was inviting coworkers. Reporter twitter cofounder jack dorsey and a small group of early users soon realized the potential of the primitive platform to spread the word quickly. I remember i was in the office on a saturday. I was alone and it was pretty early. And my phone was next to my computer and it buzzed and then the earth shook and i saw it was a tweet that said earthquake. So the technology was much faster than the physical reaching me and then it was earthquake, earthquake, earthquake. People all over the place. Reporter 11 years later, there are more than 300 million active users on twitter. Katy perry leads the way with nearly 100 million followers. Justin bieber is next and former president obama is third. But its the sitting president thats been making the headlines lately. And i believe its really important to have these conversations out in the open rather than have them behind closed doors. So if we were all to suddenly take these platforms away, where does it go . What happens . It goes in the dark and i just dont think thats good for anyone and i would rather us all be aware of how people are thinking about things, even if we disagree with it than not. Reporter how do you feel personally, though, about donald trump being so aligned right now with your brand . You know, i dont know if theres necessarily alignment with a brand. Its more, you know, hes found a tool thats useful for him and i think a lot of other people have found use and, you know, having conversation about how hes using it and what he thinks. Reporter a political conversation that social media has helped to turn into something of an echo chamber with each side of the debate seeking out likeminded people. What can social media do to change that culture of looking for reinforcement or is it too much to ask social media to do Something Like that . I dont think its too much to ask. I think we have a role to play to make sure at least the potential exists that people can see both sides. I follow the left, i follow the center, i follow the right. And i had to do all of this work to find all of these particular accounts and we shouldnt make people do all of that work. Reporter twitter added 9 million users last quarter, a welcome bit of news for a highprofile company that has struggled to make a profit and struggled to control online harassment. Socalled trolls pushing negativity and hate have turned some off to the platform, even forcing lesseelie jones to take break from twitter. At the end of last year, in december, we decided to get into a state where people were actually dropping what they were currently doing and focusing on fixing this problem. And that worked and in the past three months i think we have a much better handle of whats going on and how to fix it. Reporter if a kinder, safer twitter doesnt bring in new users, jack hopes to draw them in with a new future. Video. He recently announced streaming partnerships with baseball and bloomberg news. When im walking down the treat, i hit twitter, look at my timeline, i see Live Programming from you and bloomberg. Absolutely. You see the Live Programming and the conversation around it. You see not only what is breaking but what people think about it. Reporter as if running twitter werent a big enough job, the 40yearold dorsey also is ceo of the popular mobile Payment Company square. Its a juggling act that worries some on wall street but its certainly not unprecedented. In fact, one of dorseys favorite follows on twitter is another bignamed dual ceo. Elon musk, every time he tweets, my phone buzzes. Hes doing phenomenal stuff addressing climate change. Reporter and jacks professional hero is another ceo who ran two companies, the former head of apple and pixar, steve jobs. What was about it him that inspired you . The biggest thing is how deep of a thinker he was and how creative he was. When i was growing up, i was deeply into punk rock and i saw this Amazing Energy of people questioning everything around them. And that really resonates with me. Reporter do you feel like youre a rebel, too . In ways. Sometimes. Reporter okay. Last question i have to ask you. Yeah. Reporter favorite twitter account . My mom. marshadorsey. Several 90s pop up on the map and on friday, unsettled a cold hazy start right now in the south bay. Waking up to about 51 degrees. Were not seeing too much sunshine just yet but we can expect to see peeks into the afternoon. 48 degrees in the peninsula. 50 for the trivalley and it is very cold in the north bay at 41 degrees. San francisco right now at about 48. And even in the east bay, sticking to the 40s. A temperature trend for today is showing a very nice warmup into the 60s with mostly clear skies. And thats your latest forecast. Dylan, thank you. See you in a minute. Up next, campus controversy. Another example this weekend of a college pulling back an invitation to a speaker because of his politics. Is the trend fair protest or the closing of the college mind . Thats next. Hows it going . This week, College Seniors across the country are graduating and being sent out into the world in many ceremonies by highprofile commencement speakers. While we will undoubtedly disagree at times, i hope we can do so respectfully. Reporter texas senator john cornyn disinvited on saturday. This is a rapid growing list. Protests turned violent when Charles Murray was drowned out by hecklers. At rutgers university, former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice pulling out from a planned speech amid protests and conservative commentary a ann coulture pushed out. The incidents sending shock waves across conservative cable news. Leading to the question, is free speech dying on College Campuses . Would it matter if i was the most hateful, abusive, dreadful person in the world because these colleges are Public Institutions and they have an obligation to provide a platform for people who want to speak. Reporter milo is about as controversial as they come. Hes built a career on bashing Political Correctness by publicly degrading feminism, social justice and islam. Earlier this year, he was forced to cancel his speech at uc berkeley after riots broke out. If it is true that my mere presence on a College Campus is enough to stop violence, the fault lies not with me but the universities. Reporter what about the students who dont want you there in the first place . Stay home. Reporter the debate is swirling on campus. Why not have controversial speakers on campus. The issue isnt that they are controversial. The issue is that they are hateful. Reporter on the other hand people should have the right to say anything they want regardless of what their opinion is. It shouldnt matter. Reporter a lot of people say uc berkeley is where the Free Speech Movement took off, issues like the Civil Rights Movement in the vietnam war. Today, theres a debate about whether to let certain viewpoints be heard at all and experts say thats a problem. If they disagree with what that person is saying, they should protest, not literally stop the person from speaking. Reporter the question now, are students losing out when they shut down speakers they dont agree with . What can i learn fortunately a speaker like ann coulture who says Disgusting Things about women or queers or trans. What can i learn about that . You may not agree with any of my positions but i make you think. I make you think. And using modern technology to make it happen. Nbcs Tammy Leitner has our sunday closer. Reporter this is a mothers day jason never expected because for most of his life, he had no idea who his birth mother was or where she lived. I grew up knowing that i was adopted. I decided a few years ago, i wanted to learn where i came from. Reporter jason enlisted the help of his two best friends and with the blessing of his adopt tif parents, the search begins. They had little to go on. We had a couple of names from newspaper articles. And so we had the name of the guy that found me. Reporter he was found in a banana box on the doorstep of a nursing home 27 years ago. We found a lot of people that remembered the story. Reporter every lead, a dead end. I just wasnt really having any luck. Nothing seemed real solid. Reporter until he learned about at home dna kits and this genealogist. By the time he came to me, he had exhausted every other way he could possibly search for his birth family. So dna was the key. Sisi did in a few weeks what we were unsuccessful in trying to do in a few years.
