It has to move through the bay area throughout the day. Ill show you the future cast and youll notice the yellows and oranges. Thats heavy snow. They have winter storm warnings there. The north bay into San Francisco, san petaluma. Thats when the heavy band will move through. By 4 00 well see the band of rain. Overall its going to be one of those days you want to stay inside. Its going to be rainy and gray and really soggy. So if you have the kids, you want to take one of snow days take it easy get out there and ajoy. Theres a Flash Flood Watch for the north bay. Keep in mind. Flooded roads, creeks, and streams continue to rise throughout the day. On the bright side a chance to put on the boots and splash in puddles. My kids lo to do that. Thats true. Maybe stay off the roads. Right. More evidence let me get that straight of the power of the storms here. This mud slide closure in marin county. Its between fairfax. The road is expected to be closed until monday for repairs. Sach rated ground continues to uproot trees. This downed tree is on the marin coast. The roadblocked on highway 1 at fair valley road because a tree fell on a power line there. In the middle of the storm, the demolition of a pacifica Apartment Building is underway to keep it from crashing down a cliff side on to the beach belo below. The work should be done by wednesday. The city has been fighting the owner of the building for almost six years now. Its right next to another Apartment Building that was torn down last month. High surf and strong storms are causing the cliff underneath the building to give away. The foundation will remain as a way of stabilizing the cliff top until this summer and it will be removed. A medical scare prompted an evacuation at a walnut creek hotel. Six people recovering from getting six at Holiday Inn Express. One person was taken to the hospital. Many guests complained of their eyes and throats burning due to a pepper spray type smell coming from the hallway. Hazmat crews searched the building looking for a cause. Ultimately they never found anything, but we did ventilate the structure with our own fans and watched the hvac system in the structure to bring in a lot of fresh air into the building. Crews gave the all clear and the hotel reopened shortly after. Well, a chp officer is recovering from major injuries this morning after being hit by a car on a slick pass in the sierra. This is video of the aftermath from our traffic camera. The accident happened yesterday about 3 00 on i 80. The officer was out of his car guiding drivers because of the bad weather. Westbound lanes were closed for about an hour. Two violent investigation crimes in one night. Both in san hjose. Police respond to a deadly shooting at a coffee house. The latest incident marked the citys ninth homicide of the year. Late friday night Police Responded to a call at a cafe where a man walked into the coffee shop and started shooting. Two men were rushed to the hospital. One died. The shooter is still on the loose. Then early yesterday morning officers received a call that a man was shooting at people outside a 7 eleven. Three officers shot and wounded Stephen Pedroza after he fired after them with a high powered rifle. San jose police chief eddie garcia commended the work of his officers. I cant state enough bravery and heroism of the officers. The three officers involved in the shooting have now been placed on paid administrative leave as internal affairs investigates the shooting. Police are investigating their own officerinvolved shooting on friday night after an armed man robbed a kfc. A Woman Working inside called 911 to report a man with a gun. When officers arrived, they saw a female employee inside the store with her hands in the air. The robber tried to escape out the back of the restaurant. An officer confronted him and yelled for him to stop. Instead police say the man pointed his gun at the officer who fired one deadly shot. The District Attorneys Office is now looking at what happened. A statewide sweep is underway to catch people buying alcohol for underage drinkers. About 400 people have been arrested so far including more than 50 arrests in bay area counties. This picture shows officers arresting a man in san jose on a charge of purchasing alcohol for a minor. You never want to drive through any kind of flood waters even if it looks shallow. It only takes about a foot of water, 12 inches of water to move your car and lift it up after the ground. Thats not a lot of rain, if youre wondering, you know, if youre in your car looking at the ground and it looks shallow. Its probably more than just 12 inches. You dont want to drive through flooded roadways. And Flash Flood Watch in effect for the north bay. We have heavy rain moving through the bay area now. Mostly concentrated across the peninsula and the east and south bay. We have more rain coming our way. Lets you to the future cast. Wide spread rain continues through the day. This is 1 00. Youll notice some of the yellow embedded in pacifica, San Francisco, toward 101 corridor through the north bay. Thats where were expecting the heaviest rain around noon. That band of rain will move to the south bay and east baby 5 00. Well see heavier pockets for the east and south bay. After that things will start to dry out and tonight overnight were expecting to see a few lingering showers but tomorrow to start the day were expecting to dry out and well see sunshine and then a big warming trend in store for the bay area. That Flash Flood Watch includes the north bay. Just the north bay. Thats it. The rest of the bay is going to see plain old rain today. We could see ponding on the roadways. The biggest threats for flooded roadways and fast rising creeks and streams are across parts of the north bay. Plain old rain from the south bay into San Francisco. Even in the north bay. Nothing overly heavy now. Its been raping for hours. The ground is saturated and there are puddles and ponding on the roadways this morning. Keep in mind as you get going out there. Temperatures later on this afternoon going to stay chilly upper 50s to low 60s. We have a steady stream of moisture moving in with the cold front. You can see that by the green rows. Across the pacific more rain continue to stream in. As we move through the day and youll see heavier bands making the way through the santa cruz mountains. A quick update its expected to crest tomorrow with the rain. It will be below flood stage but keep in mind 29 feet is action stage. Thats when you start to get a little concerned. In the world of science, the idea of making babies isnt exactly romantic. We are making abalone babies. Now theyre ready to go. The process includes a lot of standing around. This is the female. And a lot of watching. Were inducing spawning. The subject at the center of the attention critically endangered White Alabama abalone. Its estimated there are only around 5,000 white abalone left in the ocean in southern california. So researchers here are now taking matters into their own hands. Were breeding them to make more of them so we can put them out in the wild. In a special oneday event the Lab Scientists collected all their white abalone separating the females from the male. They are called broadcast spawners. They send their eggs and sperm into water columns and they collect in tiny pillars of water. We put them in pockets with special chemicals that make them think that other animals are spawning. Reporter it artificially sets the mood. We get excited every time. Reporter even in a sterile scientific setting, each release abalone egg release ensues a cheering section. We combine the eggs and sperm to optimize for thelization. Reporter in about the week the work will result in a millions of offspring which a few thousand survive. We have more white abalone in the lab than exists in the wild. Reporter the scientists plan to return them to the ocean and let nature take its course. We think if we can put enough out there, that will actually have some success.
