To a developing story out of San Francisco. Police are looking for the driver of a big rig that apparently struck a tree then toppled into a homeless tent. Two people were inside the tent. They were treated curbside at the scene. All this happening about 4 00 this morning. Police are looking for a white big rig with a volvo cap. San francisco leaders will consider a plan to clarify the infamous sanctuary city law. The debate comes a year after Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez an undocumented immigrant released from jail shot and killed a woman on pier 14. Supervisors will vote on an ordinance requiring Law Enforcement to notify immigration only if the person is detained and charged with a Violent Crime and has been convicted of a Violent Crime in the past seven years. Current law allows more leeway than that. San franciscoc sheriff has com out against the new legislation. I want to set a precedent today. I want people to know its okay to own up for what you do. An apology from a San Jose Police officer who apologized for inflammatory tweets. This happened in october. The Department Fired officer phil white. Months later he was quietly reinstated. Now he is breaking his silence. Kris sanchez live in san jose with more on this exclusive interview. Good morning. That officer says he could not apologize publically before because he was in arbitration trying to get his job back. Today the city council will decide whether or not to appeal that repiering and that officer is publically saying im sorry. A story youll see only here on nbc bay area. Officer phil white talked with robert honda about being back on the job since february and the tweets that got him fired in october of last year after 19 years. During black live matter protests, he tweeted, threaten me or my family and i will use my godgiven and lawanointed appointed right and duty to kill you. Another read, by the way, if anyone feels like they cant breathe or their lives matter, ill be at the movies tonight offduty carrying my gun. He said they were not aimed at supporters but specific people he said threatened him and his family, calling him at one of his work places threatening to kill him. An investigation tfrmed those threats. Officer white says he wishes he could take it all back. I never wanted to make excuses for my actions. They were inappropriate. No doubt about that. If i could take it back, i would. Only thing i can do is apologize for them. Officer white says he wants this apology to set a precedent of owning up to mistake. Well find out later today how this apology resonates with the community and with the city officials who will decide whether to take back his rehirings. Officer white had more to say. New video, one of the many twisters wreaking havoc across the plains. At least two people were killed when the severe storm destroyed homes and buildings, uprooting trees and tossing cars. This video is from the city of wynwood. At least one man isnt dwelling on the destruction. He is counting his blessings as he and his family came facetoface with one of these tornadoes. San francisco attorney settled on a 3. 4 million settlement. Three people died in that crash that happened back in 2013. A new legal twist in the case against the two san jose brothers accused of killing their own parents. Seen her in court yesterday and his 17yearold brother might be tried separately. A judge granted a request by the older brothers attorney to delay that case until tomorrow, but the public defender for omar is ready to go to trial. We want them to be separate. We are ready to move forward. The brothers are suspected of shooting their parents to death in san jose nearly two weeks ago inside their evergreen home. They both pleaded not guilty to counts of murder. Emotional testimony from the widow of a man killed last year on a marin hiking trail. In court she faced two of the socalled drifters accused of the shooting. A judge allowed alita carter to testify against the three. Friends of the victim talked about it outside the courthouse. We may never know what is inside of these people. Last week, one of the defendants agreed to plead guilty to the murders in exchange for a reduced sentence. He will be testifying against the other two suspects. The future of the tower atop Mount Umunhum is up for vote today. Its owners want to tear it down. New this morning, one person dead, three others wounded after a man went on a stabbing spree at a train station near munich. Police there say the suspect, a 27yearold man from germany yelled god is great in arabic at that attack. The man who died was stabbed on the train while three others were attacked on a platform. Several men armed with a gun and crowbar tried to break into a south San Francisco home but the person inside fought back. Bob redell joins us live in the neighborhood where this happened. Surveillance will be keith to catching those suspects. There are surveillance cameras on that home. This happened on the 2400 block of olympic drive in south San Francisco around 10 20 last night when three masked men, one armed with a gun, another with a crowbar tried to kick their way into another mans home here. The homeowner fought to keep the door closed, succeeded, then scared them off. What he said or did to get them to leave officers wont say. The homeowner said the three suspects were young in the age range of 18 to 25 years. They are white or hispanic and wearing dark hoodies, dark clothes and took off in a white sedan. We did do digging online. A couple of blocks away there was another burglary. What is not clear if that is related to what happened here. Police sources tell us he is recovering from injuries he suffered after stabbing his aunt last friday. It happened inside her home. They call it a gruesome crime scene. She was a longtime San Francisco public defender before going into private practice. 6 34 on your Tuesday Morning. A racist rant from a muni drive going viral on facebook. Now muni is taking action. The worker reportedly called her the nword after he accused her of taking his parking space. It happened yesterday on powell street. We have looked into this urging and disturbing incident and identified the operator, while we continue to investigate we are taking immediate and corrective action. The San Francisco Police Department under a microscope. Lawyers tell Blue Ribbon Panel they dont like what they see. District attorney calls for the panel after Text Messages revealed more than a dozen San Francisco Police Officers were exchanging racist and homophobic messages. Lawyers from several firms spent months looking into hiring practice, use of force and internal affairs. Lawyers say the Police Department is not transparent and lacks accountability because it is not independently ought ted. Former judge and Panel Member Says this must be addressed. No transparency and no data. The public cant know. Im quite clear that that has to be addressed. Members of the public say the Department Needs to do a better job collecting information about how it treats minorities. That information needs to be reviewed by an independent group. This home ripped from its foundation, obliterated. At least two people have been killed here in oklahoma, including a man in his 70s this morning. Residents are coming here. You can see behind me starting to pick up the pieces and assess the damage here. This tornado outbreak was remarkable partly because of the images we are seeing. Stormchasers able to get close to these massive tornados here in wynnewood. A powerful storm roared through this county. A dozen homes damaged or destroyed. The weather here today is expected to be dry. So that could help the cleanup effort. This area is bracing for another potential round of Severe Weather tomorrow. A difficult day here. At least 19 tornados reported across the country. More tornados are expected potentially in the midwest later today. Back to you. People are just trying to sift through what they can find. Not a problem with that here in california. We have a problem with a drought. Californias mandatory water ban could soon be lifted after all the recent steady rain we had. We can thank el nino. Water leaders decided the conservation target should be lifted they have enough water to get by should the drought persist another three years. The drought is easing up, but nearly 90 of california remains in some stage of drought. Probably a good idea to continue with the conservation habits. Absolutely. Fences going up around alamo square park to undergo renovations. Today in the bay, Stephanie Chuang is live near the park getting her last glimpses before it gets shut. It will probably take time. Talking about seven months. Thats right. Its going to start being off limits today. This is when city crews will begin putting up fencing along the park. I want to point you to one of the areas of upgrades. The city is putting in grass along the perimeters here to make it look nicer but to save water. That is one of the main objectives. They are updating the decadesold irrigation system set to save 37 of water use. That is nearly 3. 3 million gallons each year. This project is set to cost 4. 3 million overall including building a Wheelchair Accessible rest room and adding new landscaping with more than 40 new trees and new lawns. This will unfortunately be closed to not just the locals who come here for the tennis courts, walking trails, but off limits for tourists who will be trying to look at post card view of the painted ladies on the other side here. City Council Considers whether to appeal the rehiring of that officer, he is saying sorry publically for the first time. Officer phil white talks exclusively with nbc bay area about the tweets that got him fired in october after 19 years. During black lives matter protests, he tweeted, threaten me or myc family and i will us my lawbegin and god appointed right to kill you. He said they were not aimed at supporters but specific people who threatened him and his family. I actually received a telephone threat at one of my work places saying this person would come up and kill me and my family. An investigation confirmed those threats officer white says he hopes his apology will set a precedent that it is okay to own up when you make a mistake. Well find out later how that apology is resonating not only with the community but city council which may decide to appeal his rehiring back in february. Kris sanchez, today in the bay. Police in south San Francisco on the lookout for several men who tried to break into a home. It happened late last night from olympic drive. You see the Police Officers there after this happened. People living at the home say one of the suspects tried to use a crowbar to pry open the front door and another was wielding a gun. Homeowners were able to hold the door shut and managed to scare those men away. Police are hoping that Surveillance Video helps them identify the suspects.
