Heres the very latest. It actually weakened overnight into a category 3 hurricane. More than 300,000 people are without power and while there are no deaths to report in florida at this point, we hope it remains that way, the death toll in haiti alone now stands at 487 people. Already a very fatal impact to that in the caribbean. A live look at San Jose Mineta International airport, where in only a few hours from now, many people are getting on a plane and heading straight to the storm to the southeast coastline to help the victims in any way they can. Much more on that story coming up in a live report in about 15 minutes. Right now, lets check in with rob mayeda, whos been checking matthews path for days. A bit of good news as the eye of the storm staying just offshore right now. Especially with regard to orlando. Catching a little bit of a break, because the category 3 winds of 120 Miles Per Hour have been staying offshore. But the outer eye wall now, crossing near titusville and Daytona Beach in the next hour or so, you could see the movement there off to the north and west, meantime, orlando looks like this area is about to see the wind speeds drop off now as that storm continues to move off to the northwest, up the florida coastline, eventually up towards jacksonville. The threat for the rest of the morning into the rest of the afternoon, transitions from Daytona Beach up to jacksonville, where local storm surge or the temporary rise in sea level in a few spots around harbors and bays could be as high as 7 to 11 feet through the afternoon. Around the bay area, clear skies, cool temperatures, for now, at least. As we head into the afternoon, numbers climbing into the 70s and upper 80s today as we transition to a summerlike start to the weekend. Now to see if your friday morning commute is shaping up as friday light, heres rob. S for most part, here you go. Thats the headline. We have some slower spots developing. Were live in san jose, pete suratos, for today in the bay. Pete, thank you very much. This is the kind of thing that could never happen in our neighborhood, except it did. And it was hiding in plain sight. Alert neighbors in the east bay led police to a brothel in the middle of their neighborhood. But they did finish with the best record in baseball this season. Game two tomorrow at wrigley. Game three takes place monday right back here at skpat t park. Weve got the curse of the cubs, the streak to have the giants. Somethings gotta give. Were believing that its friday. We have a beautiful weekend ahead. We feel with certainty that its friday, but tell us what kind of clear skies and warm weather we can anticipate. The weather gorgeous here. Too bad game one couldnt be in San Francisco. Instead, wrigley field, where its going to be breezy and chilly tonight. First pitch temperatures out there in chicago, low 50s and maybe upper 40s towards the finish of the ball game there in chicago. Now, speaking of 40s and 50s, thats how the day is starting around the bay area right now. 45 in napa. 54 in San Francisco, and well see temperatures today returning to summerlike levels. Were thinking mid80s around downtown san jose and upper 80s for the warmest spots in the north bay and trivalley today. In oakland, 70s and 80s today, and more of that for this upcoming fleet weekend around the bay area. Numbers near downtown San Francisco near 80 degrees. Warm finish to the weekend. Get ready, next thursday and friday looks much cooler, a chance of rain making a comeback. We have a problem across the dumbarton bridge. A little extra sensitive, the last couple of days have been very tough. And as we look at the rest of the bay, nothing unusual except for this slowing as you come up the highrise. The only thing on the chp report is right there. Just off of the bridge, some debris and a stall as youre getting over towards bay front expressway. That will be a distraction, but again, were watching that highrise to see if that sticks around. Meanwhile, we have this slowing. This is extended from story road up to mckee, where we just got word of a crash. Our live camera shows pa s back there. Back to you. Thank you very much, mike. Well, back to the developing story were covering this morning. Hurricane matthew. Within the last 30 minutes or sob with weve learned the death toll from the storm has now risen to nearly 500 people in haiti alone. Right now, matthew is slamming into the florida coastline. Millions are evacuated, hundreds of thousands are without power. And the impact from this powerful storm is just beginning for some. Yeah, right now, its sitting off the coast, right by Daytona Beach, and that is where we find jay gray, who is live. Jay, we understand that the eye of the storm is just off the coa coastline right now. What have you noticed in terms of changing conditions . Yeah, really intensifying here. In fact, lets take a realtime look at things. The winds so intense that its blowing those palm fronds sideways and it has for the last several hours. The surf here building as well, as this storm, as you talk about, continues to churn, just off the shore. Reporter moving along the florida coast, matthew is in many areas, overwhelming. Were already starting to see the impacts and its a monster. Violent winds, sheets of rain, and a growing surf with the potential in some areas of a storm surge up to 11 feet. I am begging you at this point, to understand the seriousness of this storm. Those types of storm surges, that is not something you want to get caught up in. Electricity has become a luxury for many in the strike zone. Tens of thousands have lost power, and that number is expected to grow. More than 11 million along the east coast are currently under a hurricane warning. Airports across the region, closed. Businesses, boarded up, and shelters, filling up. Ive been in florida all my life, so i know how bad it can get. Reporter its bad now and likely will get even worse. Emergency Officials Say the storm is an extreme threat to life and property, and warn its impact will be devastating to catastrophic in some areas, with as many as 10 million possibly losing power for weeks. The extreme conditions in florida, a warning now for those in georgia, north, and South Carolina, as matthew continues to move along the east coast. Reporter the force of the wind right now stronger than its been at any time. The eye still to the southeast, as you talk about, a slowmoving system. So were going to continue to see these conditions go downhill. Its going to get worse over the next three or four hours. Its going to be a very rough ride. Thats the latest live here in Daytona Beach. Now back to you. Hang in there, jay. Over the past hour, weve been checking in with jay and you saw how bad it got there. A very crucial time period right now. We hear all of these projections, rob. That was made originally when it thought the storm was going to be moving more inland. What do you see . Big difference for places like orlando, big population center, where actually the wind speed is not as bad as forecast. For Daytona Beach, where you just sauget grey, things getting progressively worse. Talented nbc crew there, keeping that live shot up, as wind speeds are up to about 70 Miles Per Hour, near Daytona Beach. But the inner eye wall, where the strongest winds, category 2, perhaps, to category 3 winds down here around oak hill, its moving off to the north and west, very slowly. So the threat decreasing for orlando, melbourne to the south, but increasing right now in Daytona Beach and the threat will transition off to the north towards jacksonville, heading into the afternoon. Sustained winds, still 120 Miles Per Hour. And we do think it will maintain at least category 2 strength, weakening slightly as it enkourns more upper level wind shear by jacksonville, but the coastal flooding threat still tremendous, as the temporary rise in sea level referred to as a storm surge could be up to 7 to 11 feet in a few areas there on the florida coast near jacksonville. This morning around the bay area, mostly cloudfree skies. Chilly start. Youll want a jacket for this morning, but your not going to need it. As early as 10 00 this morning. Mid to upper 80s around the south bay. Upper 70s around San Francisco. Low 80s for the peninsula. And from the north bay to trivalley, highs in the mid to upper 80s today. This is the culprit. A ridge of High Pressure that reaches its peak on saturday. And sunday the sea breeze begins to pick up, and thats a transition youll be tracking for most of next week, as a series of systems here begin to turn progressively stronger. By the time we get to wednesday and thursday, you can see the rain line now moving back into Northern California. So after a warm weekend, middle of next week looks like a good bet that well see above average rainfall totals for mid0k9. Something to see there towards the end of the sevenday forecast. But in the meantime, fantastic weather for fleet week, around the bay area. The weekend looks warm, mostly clear around San Francisco. A little hot for the valleys, but cooling conditions return, heading into monday and tuesday. Then our attention turns to a chance of those rain showers coming back by next wednesday. Mike . Weathers not a question in San Francisco. Its a matter of traffic flow. Very crowded throughout the city. Take your time, its going to be a beautiful day, from what rob shows. Meanwhile, not so beautiful in places like the dumbarton bridge. Westbound 84 continues with a slower drive. No reports of any problems on the span, at least on the chp blotter, we do have some speeds starting to recover. Looks like a good, slow drive, though, coming over, just around the dumbarton bridge toll plaza. That ripples back from midspan. Farther south, well show you the rest of the bay, south of dumbarton bridge, we only have a stretch of 101. We have three scattered incidents, not a major problem as they have moved the from the roadway, but the one northbound, 101 and the key, well show you the backup that formed. This is a little bit layer than we typically see. This will build into the blend were seeing, continuing towards 880. The bayshore freeway through san jose, a little slower than youd like. The rest of your ruoutes are okay. This was a situation that shocked so many people months ago. A petsmart groomer now accused of animal cruelty. This morning, the next step in the case against that e
