But the Police Association unexpectedly introduced its own proposal. This issue has resurfaced following the deadly shooting of mario woods by police. It happened in december in the bay view neighborhood and was recorded by cell phone cameras. Abc 7 News Reporter has more. Reporter only a few people attended this evenings Police Commission hearing as the chief was ready to make a push for tasers. But the surprise was the police union regarding a proposal for its unions. Not even the chief anticipated this this morning. The first condition is to arm every officer with tasers as soon as possible. We want the officers to be trained first in crisis intervention, and all the radio cars out in field to have an automatic external defibrillator available. Reporter on the other hand, its believed that the Police Department is proposing to train a few officers at a time. Obviously, arming them all at the same time will cost the city a lot of money. It will take a lot of training in a short period of time, and money, but it needs to be done more. Reporter the training would mean doing it on their off time, or doing overtime. Following mario woods shooting, the mayor and the police chief are once again asking that the Police Officers be allowed to carry tasers. Many are saying that when an officer is threatened, taser or no taser, police are always trained to use their guns. Its enough for police to be able to say their lives were in danger. As i say, their training is to use guns in such a situation, not tasers. Reporter the Police Commission is not expected to vote tonight. In San Francisco, abc 7 news. Health officials today confirmed a case of zika virus in northern california. The patient has a mild case and is recovering at home. The patient recently travelled to an affected country. Came down with some of the signs and symptoms, a fever, a rash, after traveling to one of those countries. And decided to seek medical help at that time. And thats when it was discovered. Earlier today, the head of the centers for Disease Control told a Congressional Committee that scientists have found the strongest evidence to date linking zika to the birth defect microcephaly. Right now, the most important thing for americans to know is this. If youre pregnant, we recommend you not go to a place where zika is spreading. And if youre pregnant and you live in an area where zika is spreading, do everything you can to protect yourself against the mosquito bites. The number of confirmed zika cases in the u. S. Now stands at 66. All cases were travel related, except for one. The cdc is working to get more information about the virus, which is spread by mosquitoes. San Francisco Police tonight are looking for a group of thieves who stole more than 10,000 worth of merchandise from the ferragamo store just before closing last night. Brazen thieves walked into the luxury store tuesday night around 6 30, grabbing more than 10,000 worth of merchandise before taking off. In this particular case, they did use force to stop one of the employees who was trying to do the right thing and prevent them from leaving. A big wave contest scheduled for today on oahus north shore had to be anticipated when the estimated 4060 foot swell did not show up. A High Surf Advisory will go into Effect Tomorrow at noon and last through saturday at 8 00 in the evening. Current wave heights in San Francisco, 4 1 2 feet. Reporter police are still trying to figure out the motivation of this man, a 37yearold from berkeley who investigators say went on an hourlong rampage, smashing into dozens of cars, including police vehicles. There was a car that was weaving in and out of traffic, coming down coolidge. And proceeded to not only sideswipe her car but the car in front of her. A tiger at the Sacramento Zoo was killed this morning after a fight with a newly acquired tiger. 15yearold female tiger baha died from her injuries when the zoo introduced a new male tiger named mo han. Officials immediately tried to separate the two tigers. The aggression started very quickly, and my team tried to separate the two cats. When the male was safely closed indoors, my team rushed in to assist baha and moved her immediately to our veterinary hospital here on grounds, where efforts to resuscitate her were not successful. Awful. Baha had been at the zoo since 2002. She was the mother of five cubs. Mohan was acquired in december. The two tigers were kept apart when mohan arrive but were able to see each other.
