Officers shot and killed a woman today. Shes the third person killed by San Francisco police in 6 months. Mayor lee named tony chaplain acting chief. He spent more than 20 years with the department. Reporter on i was inside for the News Conference when mayor ed lee explained he met with police chief sir this morning following Fatal Shooting of a black woman in the Bay View District by a police sergeant. As you said the mayor said he asked the police chief to resign and that is exactly what the police chief did. Chief greg sir has been with the San Francisco Police Department for 33 years. He was elected chief in 2011. Now the mayor said the city has been shaken and divide over tension between Law Enforcement and community of color for several months now. He said even though the Police Department has been moving toward reform especially in terms of the use of force policy things not moving quickly enough and that new leadership was needed. The mayor also said chief sir has been a dedicated public servant. Despite political rhetoric of the past few weeks i have nothing but profound admiration for greg. Hes a true public servant. He also will always have respect from me. Reporter standing next to the mayor deputy chief tony chaplain the mayor has named him acting chief. Chaplain has been with San Francisco police for 26 years. Hes worked in homicide and Gang Task Force and most recently helped establish the professional standards and principal policing bureau. We also want to mention in 2012 he was awarded the silver medal of valor after shooting and wounding an armed gang member taking him into custody without any one else being hurt. The mayor says he will now move forward push the department and this new acting chief to implement the reform that are already in progress. In San Francisco, katie abc 7 news. Reporter late this afternoon a group showed up to the scene of the shooting. They declined camera interview. But said they were almost certain the woman police shot was the family member. Sir says the vehicle never went beyond 100 feet of where it was first park on elmyra street. This as two officers chased the car. Apparently the vehicle was going from forward to reverse according to the witness at the scene. There was a back and forth with the vehicles. With the officer moving about. At some point in thisen gamement one officer, a sergeant, fired one shot. Striking the suspect. Reporter woman was transported to San Francisco General Hospital where she later died. Sir says federal agents from the department of justice cop program also on the scene. At the request of the mayor the agency is reviewing the department use of force, training and practices.
