The waiting is finally over. Nearly two months after oaklands deadliest fire, money from the biggest victims fundraiser is finally being distributed. 36 people died in december. Families were devastated and more than a dozen people were left homeless. The investigation into the cause and who is responsible continues. So far the survivors have gone without the help of almost a Million Dollars donated on their behalf. Abc 7 News ReporterLaura Anthony explains why help has taken so long. If it is too much for them, if it is well beyond their experience, then it should have been passed off to somebody else to handle. Reporter carmen breeto survived the fire, escaping her first floor studio but losing everything she owns. Two months later she tells us the organization that collected the most money for ghost ship relief, an Arts Foundation called gray area, has yet to offer her any of the nearly 900,000 dollars they collected. I got an email saying that we have verified you are a resident. Okay, cool. You know, im pretty sure the rest of the world knew that two days after the fire. We didnt have anyway to vet them. Reporter the first round of distributions from gray area will finally begin this week. The foundation reseechd more than 400 online claims for ghost ship relief. Many of out to be fraudulent. It is really important for us to outline a diligence process and go through that leg work and have the data that we needed in order for us to do the job correctly. Reporter in the meantime, the red cross is sending out its final ghost ship relief checks. 800,000 total from the as Community Fund including donations from the raiders and warriors, money given to 137 individuals displaced or inj in the fire and to the families of those who died. Sam was in a coma, a medically induced coma for five weeks. Reporter wendy maxwells 32yearold son sam was badly hurt and remains in a San Francisco burn unit. She has received several checks for her son from the red cross. After weeks of waiting just found out today an allocation for gray area is on its way. The frustration with time is not as much a problem for me because sam is someplace safe. If i was trying to use the money right now i would be horribly frustrated and i would probably be pretty ticked off. I also understand that the gray area fund in particular, out of the goodness of their hearts took this task on. Ice tells us this mornings raid was part of routine enforcement activities. Agents were trying to locate a convicted sex offender theyre trying to deport. The officers went to the Good SamaritanResource Center because they thought that was the targets last known address. These tactics of, you know, full, you know, clothed, you know, police, i. C. E. Police coming to a Family Resource center inquiring about individuals seemed inappropriate. It turns out the address agents were looking for was actually next door. No one lives at the Resource Center, which is designed to help low income latino immigrant families. Neither the city nor the county knew about the raid. So we were looking for every White Building and we were looking for every building that maybe matched the shape, and thats something i have never done. Senator josh greens says if it considered a disease doctors can write descriptions for housing. He says he sees medical conditions difficult to manage because people are homeless.
