The other man did not need to go to the hospital and students were stuck in the classrooms for about 45 minutes before police let them leave. We got two shelter in place notices since we left the building so they sent us out and sent us a message telling us to shelter in place which is concerning and we have no clue where were going. Our cars are on campus and we cant leave. Witnesses say there were four, maybe five shots then they heard screaming and saw students running. Our top local story, the arrest of three south bay jail guards. The disappointment and disgust i feel cannot be overstated. Thats the sheriff of Santa Clara County announcing the arrest of three correctional deputies for the murder of a jailed inmate. Those guards are in protective custody after being booked into the same facility where they stood watch over hundreds of inmates. The three deputies Matthew Ferris and Rafael Rodriguez placed on unpaid leave and being held without bail. Michael tyree was found dead a week ago in his cell. The autopsy results showed tyree died of Blunt Force Trauma. David is live along with melanie woodrow. David, start us off, please. Reporter he was in jail for drug possession as well as petty theft. The sheriff today called his murder could you ardly and disgusting and contrary to the values that deputies are expected to embrace. The attorney for the family of Michael Tyree didnt mince words about his death. Theres a fact basis for the phrase he got the [ bleep ] out of him. So they beat him badly. Reporter after a week of silence the Santa Clara County sheriff laid out details from the investigation, the deputies are accused of murder, conspiracy and assault under color of authority. The coroners examination found tyree bled to death after Blunt Force Trauma and found naked and covered in feces. This is a tragic, sad, heartbreaking event and that Michael Tyree, is a person of value deputies ferris were arrested at dawn each photographed at the santa clara main jail, the same jail where they are accused of taking the life of an inmate they swore to protect. Well, according to available Court Records, these three correctional deputies had not faced criminal charges previously but one had been in trouble with the law previously and tonight there is a new inmate accusation involving the correctional deputies inside this jail. As three correctional deputies are charged with the murder of a Santa Clara County jail inmate, there are new allegations of excessive use of force inside the jail. A source familiar with the investigation says an inmate currently in jail accused rodriguez and another deputy not facing charges in a different incident involving excessive force. The source says the inmate is being treated at valley medical for a broken jaw. Rod rod they are accused of killing Michael Tyree. This act took his life is not indicative of the values that we expect and honor with the men and women of this department. A search of criminal Court Records turned up a prior arrest for ferris. In 2007 when he was 18 years old he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, they were no prior arrest records for the others. Social justice advocates say inmates have complained about correctional deputies before. The difference is now that the fact that the story has broke, it gives even more validity to an otherwise silenced population. She testified during a preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing 32yearold kate steinly walking along the pier with her father when she was shot and killed july 1st. Reporter the preliminary hearing now in the fourth day recess late this afternoon, all of the testimony is over, prosecution presented its case and after the court hearing, the attorney for Francisco Lopez sanchez talked to reporters. I believe that while the defendant was aware that something had happened with this thing that he was holding, i actually dont believe he was aware that someone was shot on the pier. The overriding question was it Second Degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, or was Francisco Lopez sanchez simply a bad shot. The fourth day of hearings started with testimony from aaron carpenter, a tourist staying opposite pier 14 and took cell phone pictures from her hotel room of Lopez Sanchez walking briskly after she heard gunshots. Carpenter was suspicious of him because he was the only person walking away from kate steinly. Now lying on the ground when everyone else was going toward her. She gave the images to police. Prosecutor diana garcia also called three officers who responded to the scene. Officer Andrew Bryant was the one who arrested sanchez at embarcadero and one of the officers in the cell phone video of the arrest. During the preliminary hearings, diana garcia called a ballistic expert who showed the gun similar to this one that sanchez is accused of firing. Public defender Matt Gonzalez called only one witness but crucial to his defense that the gun went off accidentally. Crime lab director jim morris said he supported gonzalezs theory that it was an accidental discharge, thats based on earlier testimony from an investigator that the bullet struck the pier walkway first then ricocheting hitting steinly in the back. The preliminary hearing continues tomorrow morning with a judge expected to make a ruling at that time. A.
