It would be like diving into a Swimming Pool with no water. It seemed like it went forever. They saved all of us out there. Both sides of the aisle tonight with a message of unity. We have just learned that President Trump is visiting congressman scalise. The u. P. S. Shooting happened at the u. P. S. Facility. The i team has identified the shooter as u. P. S. Employee jimmy lamb of San Francisco. The friends of the victim are gathered outside a safe way in Diamond Heights which is part of his route. First we want to begin our Team Coverage with abc News Reporter vick lee with what the police know. Vic . Reporter were here at the scene of the shooting at 17th. The shooter, u. P. S. Driver jimmy lam went with coworkers to a morning meeting. San Francisco Police responded to 911 dispatch calls at 8 55 this morning, people were shot at the building at 17th and an bruno. The gunman parked his vehicle at the parking lot to the building. He went on a shooting spree, behind him a trail of victims. As you guys have probably seen from the aerial footage, there were a couple outside, and some were inside. Reporter people fanned out and were looking for him as they evacuated workers. The Police Located the suspect who was still armed with an assault pistol. The suspect put the gun to his head and shot the weapon. Reporter but not before he shot five victims. Two officers are deceased as well as three witnesses. The building has been secured at this point, we believe the incident involves only one suspect. Reporter this afternoon, mayor ed lee visited the crime scene, saying the city will provide health and trauma counseling. We wanted to make sure that u. P. S. , their management, their employees know the city is behind, helping them recover from this incident. And this request by the president of Northern California u. P. S. If i could at this time just ask all of you to please keep u. P. S. Ers in your prayers. Reporter assistant police chief attorney chaplin says that the investigation of this building are completed and csi units are in this building trying to reconstruct the crime scene. And were also told that police will start letting people back inside the building so they can collect their belongings. In a statement from u. P. S. Says, the company is saddened and deeply concerned about the affected employees, Family Members. Were trying to find out more about jimmy lamb and why he went on the shooting rampage. Police sources tell abc7 the gunman had a history of Mental Health problems and that he was estranged from his wife, investigators are not sure if he targeted any one person or fired at random. A shooter at the u. P. S. Statement. It sounds like the suspect shot himself. Reporter the suspect dead on arrival after being confronted by police and taking his own life, identified in the moments after the gun fire stopped as a u. P. S. Employee. The suspect is an employee, an asian male. Reporter but police would not confirm that jimmy lam was the shooter. We just want to make sure that the medical examiner is the one that identifies the person, and after thats done and we know that the next of kin have been notified, then we release the names. Reporter but two u. P. S. Employees say that jimmy lam was the shooter. One employee tells me that lam was having problems on the job and off and had it out for a manager. Also today we spotted police at the scene searching a 2012 bmw that came back to jimmy c. Lam. This u. P. S. Driver worked with him for a decade and describes him as a loaner. I never knew anything about him except for when he came from management, he would have friction from management. That u. P. S. Driver said that he doesnt understand why that driver opened fire, in his view, all the drivers got along. Kate larsen has been at sf general all day. Reporter we know that the victims were taken here, two of them who survived and were going to talk about more of that in a little bit. But also one of the victims mike la fete who died, we know he was loved by his large extended family here in the bay area, but were also learning that he was loved and respected by his coworkers at u. P. S. And not only that but all the people he services in Diamond Heights. I also spoke to his general who said that he was actually at the u. P. S. Facility and heard the gunshot wounds and went running to his cousin right after that. I heard gunshots. Reporter mack toya says he heard gunshots this morning when he came there to pick up his cousin from work. I stopped the van, i walked up towards the gate, and i saw my cousin sprawled out on the concrete. Reporter toya ran to his cousin and said that he loved him and then he tried to resuscitate him. To see a Family Member so close to you go down like that, and to see that visual is pretty hard. I lost a great brother. Everybody lost a great man. Mike, i used to call him my gentle giant. A former u. P. S. Coworker who did not want to be identified said that he and lafete had similar routes. We talk a lot about life and theres always we something we learn in every day life. La feete separated says they come from a very tight knit San Francisco family, most of whom were here at San Francisco general grieving today. He just wasnt the person for this to happen to. I want him back. I want him back. Reporter and so many of those Family Members, dozens of them here who were at the hospital were so visibly upset and of course our hearts go out to all of them. Now of course we do know that there were two other people that were shot this morning and survived. Im told by sources here at the hospital that they were treated here at San Francisco general and then were released so we believe they are home tonight. We also know that there were five other people who were injured not from gun shot wounds and were waiting to learn more about their conditions. Drivers gathered outside their facility, shocked that a fellow driver would open fire on them. One u. P. S. Driver said that he is was waiting for the meeting to begin and he heard the shots and instinct took over. I heard six or seven shots outside. I didnt wait to leook at the guy. Police say he did the right thing by running from an active shooter. Employees were given the option of staying at work or going home for the day. Bay area and National Officials are speaking out on the u. P. S. Shooting. It didnt take very long for local and National Leaders to react, Lieutenant Governor gavin newsom tweets, senseless, tragic, too frequent. Five people were hit including congressman Steve Scalise whos hospitaled tonight. You could see Steve Scalise who dragged himself from near second base about 10 to 15 yards across the field. He was laying motionless out there. Two Capitol Police officers were shot while trying to catch the he was angry at republicans. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. For this person to take this action was so cowardly. So cowardly. And just a short time ago, President Trump made an unannounced visit to the hospital where congressman scalise is being treated. Tragedy in london overnight as fire ripped through a highrise building. This 24story building burned for more than 15 hours. Firefighters arrived on the scene within six falling debris. Fast moving flames and thick smoke trapped a lot of people inside. People jumping out literally and putting sheets down to try to get out of the building, windows exploding, big massive pieces of debris falling to the floor. People jumped out because they had no other option. How high up . Top floor. Neighbors have sprung go action to help victims of the fire, offering food, clothing and shelter. Police they say dont know what started is fire. Travis air base was locked down today. One exchanged fire outside the bx or base exchange. The report turned out to be unfounded and the lockdown was lifted around 5 00. We continue to follow developing news out of Contra Costa County where District Attorney Mark Peterson resigned today before a criminal hearing over the misuse of campaign funds. Mark peterson pleaded no contest to one of the 13 felony counts he was facing. Katie was in the courtroom for todays hearing. Katie . Reporter onlookers and reporters packed the courtroom today to capacity. It is such a rare event to see a District Attorney become a criminal defendant and people wanted to witness that. Mark peterson will be booked into jail and released on probation. Mr. Peterson, any comment on the new charges . Reporter heres video of peterson arriving at court this afternoon, we learned hours earlier we had given a written resignation. Mark peterson faced 13 felony channels related to his personal use of some 66,000. The state Attorney Generals Office brought forth the charges, peterson pleaded no contest to 10 of those charges, as a felony perjury charge. He also faced a civil indictment, however that was dropped with todays plea. This is his attorney. Nobody is more remorseful for his conduct than Mark Peterson. Hes not allowed to hold public office, he has to serve 250 hours of Community Service and serve some 300 in restitution. One person told me they were disappointed but not surprised. In other developing news, special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the president for obstruction of justice. The investigation is wide ening to include mr. Trumps conduct. The investigation until recently focused on russian meddling in the campaign. Top National Security staff agreed to be interviewed by mueller early this week.
