Tuesday, when 6 states including new jersey and california cast their primary votes. Clinton could clinch the nomination by adding just 71 delegates to her count. A victory in california, the most significant. One of the 10 largest economies in the world, its fueled in large measure by silicon valley, hollywood, agriculture and oil. Its also a state suffering a sever drought, an acute crisis with no obvious solution. To dive into the campaign, and the impact of california in this election cycle, i asked congresswoman linda sanchez, a native californian, and senior whip for the House Democratic caucus, to join me from los angeles. Welcome. Tuesday, a big day, what are you expecting to happen . Linda we are hoping to have a good turnout in terms of participation and i expect that clinton will win california comfortably and secure the nomination for the democratic party. Fernando now, theres a lot of conflicting polls that bernie could win. Are you believing those polls or do you think that they are off . Linda i think the polling is not accurate. I think clinton enjoys a lot of Popular Support here. I think she is going to do very well next tuesday. Fernando california is playing an important this time around because of the calendar. How do you think californians are different from the rest of the country in terms of what they expect from these candidates . Linda its nice that california is going to play a role in the primary elections. Our primaries are usually too late to influence the nominee for the different parties. I think there is a lot of excitement, increased turnout, above and beyond what is normally expected in their president ial primary year. Californians are excited at the opportunity to weigh in. Were a little bit of a different breed because californians are ahead of the curve. We are typically the innovators with issues and legislation. I often tell my colleagues in dc that as california goes, so eventually will the rest of the country. Fernando when you see the rising number of new registrants who may or may not vote tuesday but want to participant in the president ial election, how do you think that will break . Linda what we have seen in california a noticeable uptick , particularly in one group im going to mention, which is the latino population. That is because they have seen what is at stake in this cycle and they are no longer content to just sit and watch what happens. They want to be active participants in shaping their destiny and choosing who they want to represent their interests. Fernando in terms of this uptick of latino voters, to you, what do you was think the effect of trump calling mexican immigrants rapists . Was that a big motivator for americans of mexican descendent to register . Linda i think donald trump is probably a gift in terms of spurring people to participate. I think his insults and the venom he is able to paint an entire group of people, i think has clearly motivated people to get off the sidelines and to participate. You cannot get enough of donald trump and yet is pinatas. I think for every latino kid who is taking a whack at a trump pinata, that is a voter the gop has lost for a lifetime. Fernando what are your expectations in terms of the house . Do you think dems will pick up seats this cycle . Linda i think the Playing Field is favorable for democrats. I know we will pick up seats, but how many remains to be determined but i think certainly if our base is excited to turn and vote in the president ial election cycle and the Republican Base doesnt show the same enthusiasm, i think that down ticket races could be very competitive for democrats and we have an excellent prospect of picking up far more seats than people thought in this cycle. Fernando congresswoman, thank you for joining me. I really appreciate it. Linda thank you for having me. Coming up next whats causing , the tech space gender gap . And, athletes without a country. Whose flag will fly for their team in rio . Just how crucial is diversity to the tech worlds future . The former ceo of reddit believes silicon valleys success depends on increased gender, racial, and diversity. Tech giants like google and face say they are trying to adapt, but employees of leading tech firms say they are still comprised of 71 men, 29 women. Project include is determined to provide a gateway into the text is her young women tech space for young women and underrepresented groups. Cofounders ellen pao and bethanye blunt join me from san francisco. Welcome to the program. Lets start with ellen. Why does the Tech Industry need diversity . Ellen it brings out much better results. Weve seen mckinsey reports that show that companies that have diversity around gender and race have a 35 better likelihood of better Financial Performance than average and brings out better ideas. If you have a better connection to your end users, if you reflect the composition of our end users then you can avoid the mistakes that other companies have made where they dont think of potential problems that make things more difficult for women and things more difficult for underrepresented groups. Fernando how much of challenge is the pipeline of talent . We know unfortunately there is an unbalanced menwomen ratio in many tech focused universities. Is that an issue for you and something that you need to tackle as well . Sort of the whole eco system . Certainly the pipeline is a problem, and it would be naive to say that the pipeline doesnt need to be addressed, but it is not the only problem. And its not a problem thats going to be solved as quickly. We need put attention to it, but it is a longer Term Investment for us to fix that. A lot of the things we focus on with project include, are we have these recommendations and there is something that you can do in your company to make changes to help diversity and inclusion right now. Pipeline only part of the problem for diversity and inclusion. Retention is huge, helping people develop careers is huge. And the fact that women and other underrepresented groups are shoved out of Tech Companies in their careers, theres this giant drop off where women in particular leave, fixing those problems helps with the overall diversity and along with that comes with products that reflect the people who use the products. It makes the products better too. Fernando and do you think, ellen, is there a conscious effort to keep women out of tech and minorities out of tech or its just cultural and thats what youre trying to change . Ellen i dont think theres on the most part, i dont think theres a conscious effort. But there is a comfort with the Current System for the people who are in power, and that makes it more systemic and institutional than just changing one or two peoples minds so what weve done is look for people who are in leadership positions, ceos to embrace the change and drive it through their organizations. Fernando now youre focused on smaller companies, startups, is that where you think you can make the most difference . As opposed to trying to change the culture of some of the big tech giants . Guest absolutely. When a company gets larger, after it had time to grow, you are trying to turn a giant boat at that point and its a lot difficult. If companies build from the beginning and with the ideas of diversity and inclusion as part of their core values, not only are they more competitive, it doesnt just help them attract better people, but it also means as they grow and change as companies, they are in a better position to weather the storms of an employee who makes a bad choice or as things happen in the environment. Being able to be responsive to those things in way that is responsible and good for the people that work inside the company. It creates better organizations. Fernando ellen and bethany, thank you, i appreciate your insights. Thank you for having us. Up next, hes loud, and proud. Whys he rooting for trump . Should this man get a place, on the president ial debate stage. The rule that could silence his arguments. Fernando now a first for matter of fact and perhaps conservative radio. His boss described him as a freethinking conservative with a no holds barred approach. He is a trump supporter and a full one. I joined him on his program to interview him about his endorsement, his take on the election, and what issues he thinks should determine your vote. Heres what happens when we wet oneonone. Welcome back. Its Chris Salcedo show. I am your liberty loving latino. Do not confuse me with loud mouth leftist latinos out there. I actually love the country. The well get to some your calls coming up, but this is kind of a first for my show. I am inviting someone to come interview me. Allow me to introduce fernando espuelas. Welcome to the audience of news talk in dallas fort worth. Fernando its wonderful to be with you. Going touring turn over the interview process to you. Why are you supporting trump . Chris hes not hillary clinton. There are idea positive aspect to donald trump. This shows us how low our bar has been lowered by the occupation of the oval office by resident obama. Fernando occupation . There were two elections where he won decidedly. Chris i called them president obama, occupier of the oval office trade mr. Obama in my mind is a conservative, has not earned im not going to give him the honorific of president. Fernando you dont get to choose. Hes elected by the people. Why delegitimize the president of the United States . Chris i did not do that trade he did that with his policies. What is the major policy youd disagree with . Chris every other country has the ability in the right in the minds of most people to secure their borders. Fernando theres 80 billion at least we know of that is spent on Homeland Security functions. Chris just because it is spent doesnt mean it is thats wisely. Fernando what do you think should be done . Should bet i think done its white donald trump is resonating the way he is, a stop to a Legal Immigration ilLegal Immigration. Fernando you must also care about the incoherence of Donald Trumps policies. I mean, for example, the idea of pulling out of nato, thats bizarre. Or sending nukes to japan. Thats a little out of bounds of any reason or logic. Dont those things make you question a little bit . Chris no, youre absolutely right. I do question that and if i can surmise it, it goes like this, i would rather gamble on trump than the certainty of a third term of obama which clinton has pledged her administration will be. And thats how i see it. Chris alright, chris, thank you so much. Its been a real pleasure to be on your program and to have you on mine as well. Chris thank you for the invite. And might i say, the goal of hard hitting, fair balanced coverage is something i appreciate. I used to be in news, so i appreciate someone who is dedicating their professional life to that. Fernando so much. A real pressure to meet you. You can see more of this interview on our website, matteroffact. Tv. Tweet us and check it on facebook. Coming up next, getting ready for rio. Can a team of refugees beat the olympic odds . Ripping the press. Whats s fernando consider these odds of making history, olympic history. 43 out of 20 million. Im talking warty three refugees who have a chance to represent the 20 million refugees world wide in rio. 43 refugees who have a chance to represent the 20 million refugees worldwide in rio. Saying beingng part of a living history as a refugee will provide recognition of the suffering and aspirations and, now, a story you should listen to, literally. Senator john mccain took to the airwaves on america now, a show hosted by his daughter, meghan. Answering a question about how to unify the gop, senator mccain, has this immediate response. I honestly dont know what to say. Fernando mccain seems genuinely concerned, citing Donald Trumps attacks on new mexico governor, susana martinez, who he describes as a republican we want, a woman, a latina, an effective governor. Heres mccains closing comment, thats what we want and yet, he was harshly critical of her. I dont get it. Fernando and as we look ahead in the president ial campaign, a story about a candidate the media may have failed to cover adequately. Im talking about Libertarian Party candidate, former new mexico governor, gary johnson. Johnson, and former massachusetts governor, william weld, his running mate, who are advocating for a place on the National Debate stage. Johnson has consistently said that the biggest obstacle to Third Party Candidates is the lack of access to televised debates. The Libertarian Party and green party have sued the commission on president ial debates to open up the process. Under the rules, a candidate needs at least 15 support in National Polls to participate. When we return, taking sides in trumps war with the press. Whos the victim here . People love my portobello mushroom buttery jack, made with portobello mushrooms, grilled onions, and garlic herb butter. Ever wonder how i came up with it . Well. Actually, i came up with it at the water cooler. But i thought youd like this cowboy story better. The portobello mushroom buttery jack is back. Part of the buttery jack family. Taste it before its gone. Fernando there are times to tell it like it is, and this is mine. Quite honestly, it doesnt matter if Donald Trumps attacks on the media offend me. What matters, is that they offend the foundations of our democracy. I think i in dealing with thepress a long time Political Press is the most dishonest people ive ever met. Fernando donald trump has accused reporters of being scum. Sleazy guy from abc. Hes a sleaze. Oversize trumps aggression against the media is pure intimidation. Are meantal insults to discourage questions, disqualify negative news reports suthe expuniversity, and in than oculi himself from anything on himselfg innoculates against anything unflattering. By nature the relationship , between politicians and journalists is contentious. That was the intent of our founders. The press in our constitutional democracy plays the Critical Role of keeping power seekers honest, demanding facts instead of assertions while exposing gaps in logic and truth. Which made me think, if candidate trump is at war with reporters now, what will he do as president . Will the American People have access to the truth about his administration, policies and team . Or like putins russia, will the media be coerced into ritual clapping for the leader regardless of the facts . Soon enough americans will answer those questions in the voting booth. Im fernando espuelas. Have a great week. [captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. Visit ncicap. Org]
