Firefighting agencies have long worried about the march of cheat grass across the great basin. Each wildfire accelerates that change, killing native grasses and sagebrush, leaving the burn scar to cheat grass which only makes the next fire more likely. But, recent years have brought another concern the fate of the sage grouse. This bird needs sagebrush to survive, but as more of that habitat is replaced by cheat grass, its increasingly threatened. Interests fear, if it lands on the endangered species list, their access to public lands would be hurt. An ideal solution would be to turn the tables, on this invasive species. Keir cheat grass is very opportunistic, but when you can give natives the upper hand against this invasive, you stand a better chance of improving rangeland health. And, keir says, the solution may lie in a bacteria discovered in the soil in washington state. It seems to interfere with Root Development in cheat grass and other invasive plants there, so the Great Basin Institute is testing its effectiveness in our area. The microbe is being sprayed on test plots in humboldt county and in spanish springs. If it proves effective, keir says it could be used on a large scale in burn areas and other sites of heavy cheat grass infestation. There could be a more get to work.
