You know for all the Grateful Dead's free wheeling chaos in their music and often their lives they were really early adopters of a lot of technology we mentioned the Wall of Sound Of course in certain amplifiers but they also were early adopters of the fan mailing list way before anyone heard of Twitter or before there was a social media they would set up tables at their shows and have fans fill out postcards and they would build this mailing list kind of a primitive database right there in their shows and then they started sending out a newsletter so you talk to the Deadheads who would subscribe and they would tell you about getting these. Newsletters periodical in the mail maybe a couple of pages long written in the actual voice of the Grateful Dead there was nobody doing anything like that again these were before social media they were kind of early tweets and I don't know if it was kind of a calculated effort to become more popular or whether. This was just. Sort of who they were we are talking about the Grateful Dead sort of post Jerry Garcia after 1905 what happened to the Corps for fair. Information news. 3.4. Welcome back we are here with Joel Selvin co-author fare thee well the. Long strange trip before we get back into it just a note this just came across my e-mail someone pointed this out that co-founder of Jefferson Airplane Marty Balan dead today at the age of 76. Because I know obviously Marty. Marty really kind of. Turned that very ugly. Yes that's true Marty was a key figure in the home awesome on drama he's also on the back jacket of fare thee well he was here at the book he loved it. You know I don't know to say about this I heard the news this afternoon and it just you know it's heartbreaking and gotten so screwed up with some postoperative problems in the hospital and there's a medical malpractise suit and it just did just it just ruined him. He just said about that Marty was the charter member of the San Francisco music scene here Jefferson Airplane was his idea he was the driving force behind putting that band together and getting them on stage and making them into what they were and ultimate was really. Sort of the Grateful Dead End and an airplane idea and then the stones kind of came in later did me. Sort of cast the Grateful Dead with. Putting that concert together the Grateful Dead manager rock Scully had been . Ran into Keith Richards in London and they sort of dreamed it up. And the Stones thought the Grateful Dead you know they're they're famous for their free concerts they know how to do this sort of stuff but of course in the long run they couldn't let the Grateful Dead do what they had like step in and take control it didn't work out in the long run as we all know it ended Harlem it ended horribly well. Jerry Garcia ever I mean I don't want to delay by this point but the Grateful Dead I mean they were so fearful of what was going on I mean they didn't even perform that day Jerry Garcia ever talking about regrets but ultimately. So album out was a traumatic episode for the dead. It really changed how they saw the world it was to let end of innocence for them for sure and you. Talkin about their mailing list all that was it was a reaction out to Mark because after getting mixed up with the Stones they just said keep with their own they just said to develop their own market to their own thing their own way they started they got out of their record company deal and started their own record company their own booking agency like I said they would build up to $300.00 employees they did everything themselves and it was a real conscious reaction. To. The trauma of Al's mind you know what else was a conscious reaction to the trauma of the working man's it. Was in December and in January they were all arrested down in New Orleans on drug charges I was very catastrophic because Owsley was nabbed in the bust and he was out on bail. On other charges so pulled he went to prison and stayed there until his court case came up. And instead wary it went to the studio and recorded it. Working instead of 5 or 6 days 5 or 6 days monumental album. Posts Jerry Garcia in the post 95 when things were as or about their ugliest and I hate to keep bringing up Phil being sort of the make bath and his wife was Lady Macbeth but there was a kind of when he was at his most and taken his stick it was a moment when Phil Lesh his band he was sort of forcing Deadhead fans to choose between him and Bob we're talking about that yeah there was a New Year's Eve battles. And the other ones got back together without still with quite some and in thinking 2000 the year 2000 and they do had a very successful tour and there are enjoying life they've they were thinking about a New Year's Eve day they checked out to see what Phil was doing because at that point his still and friends thing was quite an interaction and they were given to understand that still gives Florida for the holiday so they want to head a book to big 16000 seat arena in Oakland and about 2 weeks later Phil announced its own fans will be playing at an 8000 seat arena in Oakland and. It's almost unfair because the Kaiser auditorium where less was going back to was like old home grounds for the dead it was where the band played all the late seventy's and early eighty's before they really blew up and I was beginning of the great parking lot scenes with Kaiser auditorium. Filled sold out his New Year's Eve show and the other ones played to about half the house. At a certain point when they were sort of together didn't have the idea that they should carry on without the drummers In other words without heart and Kreutzmann Well that was the end of the 09 Dead tour when he just had it with those guys. There was a constant battle over volume and tempo in the band. And the drummers were at the scene of the volume issue so. That was something and then there was some personal things that didn't go well so at the end of that 092 or. Phil's suggested to Bobby that they go out with out the drummers. That was the beginning of further which I think he called Ultimate Grateful Dead tribute band. You mentioned that maybe that with a fatal mistake they fail but the big mistake they made after Jerry's death was to change the name of the band Why. Well. You know that's sort of you know my take on it. The. Name of a Grateful Dead. Just of Sal you boil business asset and crumple it up and throw it in the trash can in I'm in a moment of grief for months after the event. Just doesn't strike me as the most sound thinking and you know I understand the sentiment behind it and it makes sense there's no Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia that's a fact of life and in fact all the way through their post Jerry careers they've avoided using that name they used to be dead for a while fairly well shows I think advertises the music of the Grateful Dead. But yeah I mean that was precipitous didn't need to do that and not that there wasn't anything with the they could have done with the name later but it just you know like why do that. Despite all the acrimony. And they got it was nasty but how did they finally get together in 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary and perform for those amazing concerts in Chicago in Santa Clara those concerts to everybody's mind. Including the bands. They were they weren't entirely sure they could sell 3. Soldier fields. And they were just bowled over by the massive outpouring of interest in those concerts. I think it's a tribute to their actual their regard for the Deadheads I mean I was we were talking about that earlier and I was saying I you know they want to hang out with them but on the other hand. They did those concerts because they were expected to they did those concerts because they knew the Deadheads saw that as something that they had to do. They didn't want to. The 3 of them quite sman Hart and we're had some meetings with their managers and stuff like Nov the year before to talk about it but there was no real they weren't speaking of Philip that point and so it was up to Peter Shapiro the jam band on chipper Durex Troy near out in New York who had signed a big money deal to. Fill with Phil Lesh for exclusive concert rights and he was in a position to kind of approach fill in more informally and he and he serves as the bridge of communication. Those guys never really spoke again until they actually got together and rehearsed like it's like negotiating a last thing that he. Had that that moment I know. It's in the book and he describes so vividly to us. The Mickey Hart going to rehearsal that 1st day and walking in and seeing there's nobody else there except Phil Lesh. That was a tense moment. I'll say it but it came together and how are they now after that after the concert I mean was it awkward Was it tense even then or. With a sort of swept away by the bonhomie and everything and how are they now together well 3 of them we are heart and question are operating as dead in company with guitarist John Mayer and drawing huge crowds playing great music and having a wonderful time. Leisure's continued to go to his New York kids with Peter Shapiro and his ring County gigs it is called The Terror of the crossroads where mostly with his son's band Graham lash. But he's found time to do. Too man too with Bobby where they did a handful of dates last year I think. Phil and Bobby were getting along for a while but I don't think they are anymore I don't know it's like brothers that fight it but there are bonded there whether they will be at each other's funerals and and all that and they don't speak to me you know it's like of Family Feud. I mean in many ways as silly as that because it's it's it's music it's intended to bring people together and yet the people that are producing the music are really the antithesis of all that. Well. Here you ever get fed up with them thinking Come on guys is ridiculous. I understood the whole drama that's what interested me about writing this book I saw it right away when they when I saw the they really didn't know what to do with themselves and had no clue about how the music business worked or what their assets really were the money so out of the sky on them after Jerry died they that if that had happened I don't know what these guys would end up doing. The. Dicks Picks the. C.D.'s that were taken out of the archives that's a good was selling out of their own office with no middleman after Jerry's death they went into the stratosphere and started dumping like $50000000.00 a year on the company for a number of years so they were able to like afford to not know what they're doing. Is that the last chapter I mean or is it possible right I mean is approaching 80 now I mean it's you know there's a point of no return but will we see them get together again one more time or I wouldn't be at all surprised. Anything's possible of course. Whatever they do in the future even if on 4 of them play. Together the whole affair of the wall concerts were epic monumental events that will overshadow anything that happens in the future they've they've they've pulled the plug on the machines as they walked out the door in Chicago and was a Behind is a remarkable. Vital robust. And congregation of jam band fans who are turning their attention on all over the place and it seems the 1000 bands have sprung up where there was a you know so few before it's just amazing. And sort of the children of the Grateful Dead with bands like fish. I mean are there more you expect to see sort of this phenomena again where a band you know they don't really get. The commercial recognition on or the airplay but they have this massive massive cult following that they become an industry among you know unto themselves is that ever replicate Well this is such a different world with the Internet and. Streaming and m p 3 is all that really you know the Grateful Dead were 001 off of them that took place because of a whole combustion of times and places and personalities. No that's not going to happen again will there be musicians making music that people appreciate outside the channels of mainstream media Yeah that goes on all the time that's going on right now think about the whole acoustic music world you know the folk music guys I mean they live out there there's festivals there's nightclubs you never hear the music you don't even know what we're talking about those working at those clubs but there's a whole cruise to music scene you miss those days which days well I guess they sort of the heyday of classic rock 652750 man you should have been there oh. I get to take some calls. After the break absolutely will do that well the final chapter the Grateful Dead's long strange trip Pamela with just. A little bit of Pam about Pamela Pamela is from Atlanta. She brings a very important perspectives of this project. When I retired from the Chronicle in 2009 I stopped going to these post Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead shows bec
