This is kpix 5 news. Celebration and anger. Intense emotions have sparked across the country as tonight George Zimmerman is a free man. We the jury find George Zimmerman not guilty. Jurors found the florida neighborhood watchman not guilty of Second Degree murder in the killing of teenager Trayvon Martin. The news brought celebration among zimmermans legal team and his family but a very different reaction outside the courtroom. Shock. Disappointment. Heartbroken. Heartbroken for trayvons family. Me as a parent. Every grandmother. Got young grandsons coming up in society. This shouldnt have happened. And good evening. We start our coverage of local reaction to the verdict in the east bay. Christin ayers is there where a peaceful rally is taking place tonight. Reporter its not just a rally. Its moving into a march. We look over here. Well have the camera man pan so you can see an organic march starting to happen from city hall right now. Any where from were thinking about 150 people out here peacefully walking and Holding Signs and marching. This started as a very small protest earlier on here. People just waving banners on the street here in oakland. But it has certainly grown with people coming out and speaking before this crowd. A lot of frustration. A lot of anger. Heres what we heard from people who turned out earlier this evening to make their voices heard about the verdict. Disgusted. Absolutely disgusted. I mean its clear cut murder. And not just seconddegree murder. Its firstdegree murder. He stomped him down before he put a bullet in him and kill him. Raged. In pain for his family and his community. Pain, deep, deep, pain. And rage. Its got to end. Reporter and now we have protesters moving down broadway headed toward uptown at the moment. Right now again about 150 protesters. Peacefully marching throughout oakland right now. Oakland does have a very rich history of protests. And we hear that there will be more protests tomorrow. In fact, we heard that theres one planned for about noon. Another protest planned at 4 00 p. M. So its really going to take waiting to see what that actually means. Were actually hearing just a little bit of, you know, were seeing a little bit of vandalism happening. As im looking over my shoulder im seeing some graffiti on the wall here. And some horns honking and that sort of thing. Theres bikes down the street. A little bit of a disturbance happening here. But at the moment its been largely peaceful. What sort of Police Presence is there tonight in oakland . Reporter we have seen a couple cruisers. Police have been hands off as far as we can see. We have heard that they have been prepared for whatever may happen tonight and i did actually talk to people at a couple of apartment buildings out here who were ramping up their security as well just in case. A very fluid situation. Well have to see how it turns out. Hundreds of people hit the streets in San Francisco to protest the verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial. Chopper five was over the crowd protesters made their way through the Mission District and police were called out to monitor the situation. But as joe vasquez tells us, the march was peaceful. Reporter here at the intersection of 24th and mission its getting back to normal. But for a couple hours tonight the streets were packed with demonstrators. About 150 demonstrators from a group called the answer coalition. That group took to the streets in what they called an emergency demonstration. Answer stands for act now to stop war and racism. They called that demonstration in response to the verdict that came down in the George Zimmerman trial. And they were on the streets pretty quickly about a half hour after words. They marched through the mission. They wrapped up this demonstration around 10 00. And they said they will gather tomorrow for another demonstration at 4 00 p. M. At market and powell. Reporter anne, the protests here as well were very peaceful. There were maybe less than 200 people here i think outside the courthouse when the verdict was read. The reaction really ran the gamet. There were a few happy for George Zimmerman. Most of the people here that were demonstrating were quite upset. There was a lot of sadness. A lot of pain being expressed. They felt the Justice System did not work for them. Members of the jury, have you reached a verdict. After deliberating for about 16 hours the jury in the George Zimmerman trial came back with its verdict. We the jury find George Zimmerman not guilty. While George Zimmerman showed little reaction after the verdict was read his wife started to cry. The defense says zimmerman is relieved. We are ecstatic with the results. George zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself. Prosecutors say they felt they made their case for Second Degree murder. I am disappointed as we are with the verdict but we accept it. Reporter outside, demonstrators were frustrated. Justice was not served. I am very disappointed, disheartened. I really feel like George Zimmerman got away with murder. Reporter he says he shot Trayvon Martin in self defense last year. Prosecutors claimed he targeted the 17yearold. The case began as a local crime but quickly made national headlines. Zimmerman was initially let go under floridas stand your ground law. Protests were held nationwide until he was taken back into custody. Trayvon martins parents who sat through the trial were not in the courtroom when the verdict was read. A family attorney spoke on their behalf. For trayvon to rest in peace, we must all be peaceful. Reporter George Zimmerman is now a free man. But zimmerman could face civil will have legal action from Trayvon Martins family like wrongful death. Is there any indication that the jurors will talk . Not so far. You know all the media organizations were encouraged to come up with letters to give them each. Six letters that would be presented to the jury and they could decide whether or not they wanted to talk. But as of the verdict, none showed any interest in talking at least for now. And their identities still remain protected by the court. Thank you. Well new tonight, San Francisco police have identified the suspect in yesterdays shootings at the jewelrymart. 23yearold barry white of antioch has been charged with two counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder. Kpix 5 talked with employees about the tragedy. I had gotten two phone calls almost simultaneously. Reporter she was one of the store owners who hunkered down in their shops after fridays shooting left two women dead and a man wounded. One was from my daughter telling me there was a shooting at my husbands building and the other was my husband letting me know there was a shooting and that he was okay. The suspect went eastbound on the 800 block of brannan where he was engaged by three police officers. Responding to a shots fired call. He produced a revolver. Fired upon the officers. Reporter the suspect ran into a restaurant and continued shooting but before police returned fire, threw down his gun and surrendered. The man who was shot is hospitalized and in stable condition. A crew was cleaning up the crime scene at the Jewelry Store inside the building but the talk was about the murder victims. Women he refers to as the girls. Everybody was praying for these girls. Nobody was talking about anything else but about the girls. We know the girls. They are such sweet people. Reporter they were locked out of their stores today. He met Charlotte Murphy and Peter Maguire with a wedding band. We were kind of shocked. We had no idea what happened. Were getting the ring. Yeah. Of course. Yeah. Absolutely. Police say the suspect had one business transaction with the owner of the Jewelry Store, they say robbery doesnt appear to be the motive. An illegal left turn is being blamed for a muni crash that sent nearly 20 people to the hospital. The crash happened around 1 00 this afternoon at third street and evans avenue. The van and light rail train were traveling on third street when Authorities Say the van turned in front of the train. Standing on the shore, facing the run way, were the families of two of the High School Girls killed in the crash. We are gathered here together to pray for the victims of Asiana Airlines. They were there to mark the moment one week ago when flight 214 came down. Wang linjia and ye megyuan were both ejected from the plane. Many of the survivors are being isolated under tight security.
